Description

H. HALiS'.
WEEDER.
APPLICATION FILED IUNE 28. |916.
Patented-Jan. 29, 191|@` Armen/Ey@ HENRY HALE-S, 0F HAVRE, MONTANA.
WEEDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented dan. 29, 191%.
Application filed June 28, 1916. Serial No. 106,345.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Ee it known that l, zen of the United States, and a resident of Havre, in the county of Hill and State of hfiontana, have invented` a new and Improved Weeder, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
The invention `relates to weeders and has for its object to so mount the knives that they can be set to or cut in ahorizontal plane or at angles thereto.
A further object of the invention is to mount the knives so that they will move to one side when they come in contact with an immovable object and when the object is passed will be returned to normal posi` tion.
A practical embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which similar characters of reference indi cate corresponding parts in all of the views.
F igure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement,
Fig'. 2 is a detail view ofthe standard and blade partly in section,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modificaof the invention Ition and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the same with the knife standard removed.
eferring' to F igs. 1 and 2, 5 is a beam of the frame of a weeder, in which the knives are mounted. A sleeve 6 mounted in the beam 5 is provided at its upper end with a disk 7 and in said sleeve is mounted the tubular-shaft 8.
In the lower end of the tubular shaft 8, the square upper end of the standard 9 is adjustably secured by the set screw 10 and to the lower end of the standard the knife 11 is secured. The knife 11 is provided with a shank 12 which terminates in an arc-shaped member 13 provided with a curved slot 14:. The member 13 of the shank of the knife lits into the curved face of a block l5, whose other` face is roughened to lit against the roughened surfaces of the lower end of the standard 9, and a bolt 16 passes through the slot of the shank of the knife, the block and Standard- By hUS f56- curing the knife tothe standard the lmlfe HENRY Hanns, a cit-V can be adjusted to cut in a horizontal plane or at angles thereto.
Upon the upper end of the sleeve 6, below the disk 7 thereof, is the disk 17 and a bolt 18 passes through the hub of the disk and the sleeve 6 into the tubular shaft 8. A coil spring 19 on the sleeve has one end secured to the beam 5 and the other end to the bolt 18. The disk 7 is provided with a plurality of openings 7 and the disk 17 with an openingl 17, and through said openings a pin 2O passes. By this construction the knife will turn to one meets an obstruction and will return to normal position after the obstruction is passed. To increase the tension of the spring the bolt 18 and 17 rotated to the desired extent, after which the bolt and pin are again replaced.
ln F ig's. 3 and el the construction is the same as that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 with the exception that instead of a tubular shaft, in which the knife standard is mounted, a Solid shaft 21 having` a socket 9.1a at its lower end to receive the knife standard is employed. By my means can be readily different angles of mounting` the knife, it and quickly set to cut at and will readily yield when meetingan obstruction, thereby preventing breakage. )ely means is also very simple and cheap.
`What I claim is:
hln an agricultural implement, a frame,v a shaft mounted to turn in. the frame, a spring` connected with the upper end of the said shaft. a standard vertically adjustable in the shaft, a substantially horizontal blade provided with a. vertical shank at one end, and means for adj ustably securing' the shank to the lower end of the standard, whereby the blade may be set to cut in a horizontal plane or at angles thereto.
2. ln an agricultural implement, a frame, a tubular shaft mounted to turn in the frame, an adjustable spring device connected with the upper end of the shaft, a standard vertically adjustable in the shaft, a substantially horizontal blade provided with a vertical shank at one end and means for adjustably securing the shank of the side whenever it pin 2O are removed and the diskV knife to the standard to set the blade at v different angles.
f a spring connected With the said shaft, a
standard vertically adjustable in the shaft, a. substantially horizontal blade 'provided with a vertical shank having an enlarged and aro-shaped upper end provided With a the shank of blade and having an are-shaped face with which the enlarged arc-shaped end of the shank enga-ges, and a bolt passing through the standard, block and slot of the shank of the blade.
