Application filed January 22, 1913, Serial No. 743,559. Renewed April 24,11914. Serial No; 834,222."
To all whom it may/concern j Be it known that we, VAYNE L. CARTER and Duros B. STULTS, citizens of the United States, residing at Vtlaverly, in the county of Morgan, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and we do hereby declare the `following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, ysuch as will enable others skilled in the art t0 which it appertains to make and usethe same.
This invention relates to cultivators and more particularly to means for adjusting the shovel thereof.
The invention has for its object to construct a device of 'this character in such a manner that the shovel may be adjusted vertically and angularly.
lVith these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combinations and arrangements of parts `to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front View of the device. Fig. 2 is a rear view. Fig.` 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. l is a similar view on line l-i of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral l designates a cultivator shovel of any well known shape, and to the rear face of which is secured a sleeve 2, said sleeve being provided with internal threads 3. Formed upon the rear surface of the sleeve Zis a v pair of spaced ears el and between which is pivotally mounted a lever 5, the inner end of which is formed with a curved head 6. The head 6 is adapted for `operation in the vertical slot 7 formed in the rear surface of the sleeve 2 and between said ears.
The standard 8 is circular in cross section for its major length and is provided "with threads 9 so that the threads 3 of the sleeve Q may engage therewith. The rear surface of the shank` 8 is provided with a plurality of spaced longitudinal grooves 10, either one of which being adapted to register with the Copies of this patent may `be `obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of '.Patents,`
slot 7 in the sleeve 2 so that the curved portion 6 of the lever 5 will engage therewith to hold the shovel in different angularadjustinents.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that when it is necessary to vertically adjust the shovel l. it is only necessary to operate the lever to disengage one of the slots 10 whereupon the sleeve maybe rotated to raise or lower the shovel, as the 0ccasion may require. noted that `when it is desired to angularly adjust the shovel it is only necessary to rotatethe sleeve until the slot 7 therein registers with the desiredgroove, whereupon the Further it I will be Patented oet. 6,1914.. j
lever 5 is swung downwardly at which time` the curved portion 6 engages the proper groove and holds the shovel properly ad-` v justed as well as against accidental rotation.`
What is claimed is`:-
l. In combination with a cultivator shovel standard having threads formed thereon, of a shovel having an interiorly threaded sleeve fixed thereto and adapted to engage the threads of the standard, a plurality of longitudinal grooves formed in the shank, a lever carried by the sleeve for engaging in one ofthe grooves, as and for `the purpose set forth.` j
In combination with a cultivator shovel standard having threads formed thereon, of a shovel having an interiorly threaded sleeve` mounted thereon and adapted `to engage the threaded standard, ears formed upon the sleeve, said sleeve having a slot formed therein and located between the ears,` i
a lever pivotally connected between the ears,
a plurality of longitudinal slots formed in the standard, any`one of which may be en-r tures in the presence of two witnesses.`
