To all whom/2'15 may concern Be it known that we, (1) JOHN W. BAX- TER and (2) RICHARD DAVIS, citizens of the United States of America, residing at (1) VVellsville and (2) St. Marys, in the countics of (1) Columbiana and (2) Elk, and States of (1) Ohio and (2) Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin-Point Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a hatpin pointprotector, and our invention aims to provide a device that can be mounted upon the pointed end of a pin to serve as a lock, also to serve as a guard for preventing persons from being injured that contact with the pin.
Our invention further aims to provide a device of the above type that can be used in connection with various kinds of pins, the device being simple in construction, durable and applicable to any desired ornamentation.
lVith the above and other objects in View, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pin provided with the device, Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the device, Fig. 3 is an enlarged front elevation of the same, and Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the pointed end of a pin.
The reference numeral 1 denotes a pin having one end thereof provided with a head 2 and the opposite end pointed and provided with a transverse oblong opening or slot 3.
The reference numeral i denotes a tapering sleeve having the large outer end thereof provided with a head 5, said sleeve having a bore (3 formed therein. extending from the inner end of the sleeve to a point in proximity to the head 5. The bore 6 has the end thereof flared, at at 7 at the inner end of the sleeve 4, whereby said bore can easily receive the pointed end of the pin 1. The sleeve 4 is provided with an opening 8 in communication with the bore 6 and extending through said opening is a movable tooth 9 adapted to enter the slot 3 of the pointed end of the pin. The outer end of the tooth 9 is reduced to provide a screw threaded stem 10 that is provided with a button or knob 11.
Secured to the inner end of the sleeve 4 by screws 12 or other fastening means is one end of a flat compression spring 13, the opposite end of the spring being apertured, as at 14 whereby it can be placed upon the screw threaded stem 10, between the tooth 9 and the button or knob 11. This spring retains the tooth 9 normally in the slot 3 of the pin 1 or in the bore 6 of the sleeve 4, and as the device is placed upon the pointed end of the pin, the pointed end of the pin forces the tooth 9 outwardly by reason of the end of the tooth being beveled, as at 15. Immediately upon the slot 3 registering with the opening 8, the spring 13 forces the tooth 9 into the slot 3 and locks the device upon the pointed end of the pin.
It is thought that the operation and utility of the device will be apparent without further description, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof are susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What we claim is The combination with a hat pin having its shank formed with a rectangular slot in proximity to its pointed end, of a sleeve having its outer end provided with a head and further formed intermediate its ends with a rectangular opening of less length than the length of the slot and communicating with the bore of the sleeve, a flat tooth having a beveled end, said tooth of less width than the length of said slot and extending through said opening and adapted to have its inner end engaging in said slot for maintaining the pin coupled to the sleeve, an outwardly curved leaf spring having its inner end detachably secured tothe inner end of the periphery of the sleeve, said spring of a length as to project beyond said opening, a cylindrical threaded stein projecting outwardly from said tooth and extending through the free end of said spring, and a button secured upon said stein for detachably coupling the tooth to the spring.
