HAT-PIN-POINT PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6, 1 913.
Application filed December 18, 1912. Serial No. 737,505. I
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS F. HILDITOH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Georgetown, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin-Point Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to hat pin point protectors, and the objects of my invention are to provide a simple and inexpensive device that can be easily and quickly placed upon the pointed end of a hat pin to prevent pedestrians and others from being injured when contacting with the pin, and to provide a strong and durable guard that will serve as a lock to prevent a pinfrom becoming accidentally displaced.
Further objects of my invention are to provide a non-displaceable guard for hat pins made of practically four pieces of material that can be easily assembled, and to provide a guard of the above type that is susceptible to any desired ornamentation.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the guard as applied to a hat pin, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the guard.
A guard in accordance with this invention comprises a metallic resilient strap that is bent upon itself to form a loop 1 and arms 2 and 8. The ends of the arms 2 and 3 are bent inwardly to provide gripping members 4 and 5 respectively, the member 4 having an opening 6 adapted to longitudinally aline with a tube 7 carried by the member 5. The tube 7 extends longitudinally of the guard, between the arms 2 and 3 and the outer end thereof is formed integral with a transverse plate 8 that has bent lugs 9 extending through openings 10 provided therefor in the arms 2 and 3.
Arranged in the loop 1 of the guard against the plate 8 is a yieldable block of material 11, as rubber or cork and encircling the tube 7, adjacent to the members 4 and 5 is a split piece of elastic material 12, as rubber. The piece of rubber 12 retains the arms2 and '3 normally separated with the opening 6 out of alinement with the tube 7. By pressing the arms 2 and 3 together the 'ooenin 6 can be laced in lon itudinal alinement with the tube 7 to receive the pointed end of a pin 13. The pointed end of the pin passes through the tube? and enters the block of yieldable material'll, as best shown in Fig. 3. When the arms 2 and 3 are released, one wall of the opening 6 engages the pin 13 and locks said pin within the tube 7 whereby the guard cannot become accidentally displaced.
It is thought that the utility of the guard will be apparent without further description and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the struc tural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A hat pin point protecting device comprising a resilient metallic strap bent upon itself to provide arms having the ends bent inwardly to form gripping members, both of which are apertured and adapted to receive the pointed end of a pin, a tube arranged longitudinally between said arms and connected to one of the members thereof, a plate carried by the outer end of said tube and loosely connected to said arms, a yieldable block arranged between said arms and said plate, and an elastic piece of material interposed between said tube and said arms adjacent to the members thereof.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
