HAT-PIN-POINT PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 19, 1912.
Application filed November 10, 1911. Serial No. 659,656.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE BALOG, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Perth Amboy, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat- Pin-Point Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a hat pin point protector, and the objects of my invention are to provide a device that can be easily and quickly mounted upon the pointed end of a pin to prevent persons from being injured coming in contact therewith, and to provide a device of the above type that serves as a lock for preventing accidental displacement of the hat pin relatively to a hat.
Further objects of my invention are to provide a hat pin point protector that is durable and easy to manipulate, and to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construetion that is inexpensive and highly efficient as a guard for the pointed end of a pin.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifieially described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the hat pin point protector as applied to the pointed end of the pin. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional View of the hat pin point protector, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the detached locking mechanism.
A hat pin point protector in accordance with this invention comprises a head or guard made of two sections 1 and 2, said sections having confronting flat faces 3 and 4 respectively. The fiat face 3 is provided with recesses 5 and 6 and the flat face 4 with recesses 7 and 8, the recess 7 confronting the recess 5 and the recess 8 the recess 6.
Mounted in the recess 5 of the section 1 is a piece of rubber 9 or other yieldable material, and pivotally mounted in the recess 7 by a transverse pin 10 is the apertured lug 11 of a locking lever 12. The inner end of the lever is bent at right angles, as at 13 and provided with a notch 14. The outer end of the lever is bent at right angles, as at 15 to extend into an opening 16 provided therefor on the section 2. The angle end of the lever is provided with a button 17 that protrudes from the opening 16 whereby the locking lever 12 can be easily shifted.
Arranged within the recesses 6 and 8 is a coiled spring 18 having one end thereof anchored, as at 19 in the section 1 and the opposite end thereof connected, as at 20 to the angle end 15 of the lever 12. The faces 3 and 4 and the sections 1 and 2, at the outer ends thereof, are recessed to provide a funnel shaped opening 21 to permit of the pointed end 22 of a pin being easily inserted in the protect-ing device. The inner ends of the sections 1. and 2 are bound together by a ferrule 23 and said sections can be otherwise connected, as by solder, after the parts have been assembled. The pointed end 22 of the pin is frictionally held in engagement with the piece of rubber 9 by the locking lever 12, and by pressing upon the button 17, the pin will be released and can be easily withdrawn from the protecting device.
What I claim is In a hat pin point protector, a guard comprising sections having flat adjoining faces provided with recesses, one of said sections having an opening formed therein in communication with said recesses, a piece of yieldable material arranged in one of said recesses, a lever pivotally mounted in another of said recesses and having one end thereof notched to engage said pin and hold said pin in engagement with said piece of yieldable material and the opposite end thereof bent to extend into the opening of said section, a push button arranged in the opening of said section upon the end of said lever, a coiled spring arranged in another of said recesses and having one end thereof anchored in one of said sections and the other end connected to the bent end of said lever, and means for connecting said sections together.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE BALOG.
