SAFETY LOCKING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ANDREW WVILi-IELM Kosiii and THOMAS CASEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Fitchburg, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Locking Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety locking devices and more particularly to what will be here inafter known as a loss preventing device adapted to be applied to scarf pins, the main object of the present invention being the provision of a locking means which is particularly adapted for bar pins to securely lock the pin portion against movement after the same has been inserted through the material and placed in an effective position.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a safety lock of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efliciency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and, at the same time, is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pin constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a plan view looking toward the under side of the pin.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 indicates the body of a bar pin, which is provided at each end with the spaced bearing members 2 and further provided adjacent said bearing members with the spaced ears 3, said ears being arranged in pairs at each end of the bar 1 and rotatably mounted between the ears at one end of the bar, is a. catch member 41 which is preferably oblong in form and provided upon one side with a recess 5 and formed at its opposite side with a shoulder 6 which is adapted to be engaged by a spring actuated pawl 7, the lower end of which is pivotally mounted between the bearing members 2, said pawl being provided with an outwardly projecting finger piece 8 adapted to be engaged and pressed downwardly when it is desired to disengage the pawl from the shoulder 6 and permit rotation of the member i. The bar 1 is provided with a bore 9 in which a coil spring 10 is arranged, the outer end of which bears against the shoulder 11 to retain the pawl 7 in a normally locked position. Mounted upon the other end of the bar 1 and arranged between the spaced ears 3, at this end, is the substantially circular inner end 12 of a pin member 13, the circular end of said pin member being provided with a shoulder 14 which is adapted to be engaged by a pivoted pawl 15 to retain the pin 13 in a locked position. The pawl 15 is provided at its inner end with an outwardly projecting finger piece 16 whereby said pawl may be quickly and readily disengaged from the shoulder 14: and release the pin 13. The circular portion 12 of the pin 13 is provided with a second shoulder 17 against which the coil spring 18 is adapted to bear to throw said pin to an open position when released from the catch member.
The bar 1 is provided with a bore 19 which extends inwardly from the end of the bar and communicates with the space between the ears 3 at the end of the bar to which the pin is secured. The spring 18 is arranged within the bore 19 and mounted upon the guide pin, as shown, one end of said spring being adapted to bear against the shoulder 17 formed in the enlarged portion 12 and against the shoulder 20, upon the inner end of the pawl 15, so that when the pawl 15 is disengaged from the shoulder 14, the tension of the spring will throw the pin 13 to its open position. Thus it will be apparent that when it is desired to apply the pin to a garment, or any material, the pin 13 is first inserted within the material and the bar 1 then pressed downwardly and the point of the pin 13 is then engaged with the catch member 4:, the pressure bringing the two members, namely the pin point and the bar 1 together will compress the spring 18 and retain the same under compression, until the catch members 15 and 7 are released by pressing downwardly upon the finger pieces 8 and 16. Thus the compression of the spring 18 will force the pin member 13 to an open position,
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be readily apparent that we have provided a simple and durable safety locking device which can be quickly and readily applied to various forms of bar pins, so as to securely retain the pin member in its locked position, after the same has been applied to the material. It will also be apparent that our improved safety locking device is extremely simple in its construction and can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a comparatively lOW cost.
While we have shown and described the preferred form of our invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying our invention into practice, without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described this invention, what we claim is l. A device of the class described including a body bar having a longitudinal bore formed in one end thereof, a pin member having pivotal connection with the bar near the inner end of the bore and provided with an enlarged head, oppositely disposed shoulders formed upon said head, a pivoted catch carried by the end of the bar and adapted for engagement with one of the shoulders to retain the pin in parallel relation with the bar, a spring member arranged within the bore and having one end engaged with the opposite shoulder and the other end engaged with the catch near its pivot point, whereby when the catch is released, from one of the shoulders, the spring members will bear against the opposite shoulder and move the pin outwardly away from the bar, as and for the purpose set forth.

A device of the class described including a body bar having an inwardly projecting bore formed in one end thereof, a pin member pivotally mounted upon the 'bar, a catch member pivotally mounted adjacent one end of the bar and adapted for engagement with the free end of the pin, a pawl pivotally mounted upon the bar and adapted for engagement with the catch member to hold the same against rotation, and a coil spring arranged within the bore, said coil spring bearing against the pawl to normally retain the same in engagement with the catch member. 7

A device of the class described including a body bar having a longitudinal bore in one end thereof, a pin member pivotally mounted upon one end of the bar and provided with an enlarged head portion, oppositely disposed shoulders formed upon said head portion, a pivoted catch mounted upon the end of the bar and adapted for engagement with one of the shoulders, a coil spring arranged within the bore and having one end bearing against the other shoulder, a lug formed integral with the catch and adapted to bear against the other end of the coil spring, a finger piece formed on the catch member whereby to actuate said catch member and disengage the same from the shoulder, the lug on said catch member bearing against the coil spring whereby to actuate the pin and swing the same upwardly away from the bar, as and for the purpose set forth.
