Description

UNITED STATES STAGY B. OPDYKE, OF CAMDEN, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN NECKLACE-CLASPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,965, dated February 24, 1874; application filed May 8, 1873.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, STAOY B. OPDYKE, of the city and couniy of Camden, State of New Jersey, have invented an Improved Necklace- .Glasp, of which the following is a specification:
rEhe object of my invention is to make a necklace-clasp, the locking and unlocking of which shall be effected by the aid of a device which shall perform its duty without detract' ing from the symmetrical finish of the exterior. I attain this object by making the clasp in the manner best observed in Figure 1, where A and A represent the two portions ofthe clasp, the latter being in section, and consisting of a hollow cylinder, a, closed at the outer end, where there is an eye, b, for receiving one end of the necklace or chain. A collar, cl, surrounds and is secured to this cylinder, beyond the open end of which a portion of the collar projects, as shown. The portion A of the clasp consists of a cylinder, af, of the saine diameter as the cylinder a., and has at its outer end an eye, b', for receiving the other end of the chain or necklace, a cylindrical projection, e, on this portion A of the clasp being arranged to fit freelyT into the cylinder a', while a portion of the cylinder d fits into the end of the collar d. A coiled spring is placed in the end of the cylinder a, and in the outer edge of this cylinder, within the colla-r d, is cut aslot, communioaiing with a recess, i.
In proceeding to lock this clasp, by pushing the end of the portion A into the portion Al the former will come in contact with the spring f, and compress the saine, while a pin,
y, on the said portion A, enters the slot untions of the clasp are now connected together,
and cannot be detached until they are first pressed endwise toward each other, so as to withdraw the pin y from the hooked recess i, and then turning one or both portions of the clasp until the said ping coincides with and can pass through the slot x.
One of the prominent advantages of my invention is that it presents no unsightly spring catch or other protuberance to mar the exterior finish of the clasp, which, as will be seen in the exterior view, Fig. 2 is uniformly symmetrical, the fastening devices being contained within the collar d.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the portion A of the clasp and its piu y, with the portion A', its spring and recessed slot, and collar d, all being constructed substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
STAGY B. OPDYKE.
