B. M. JOHNSON. HOOK.
No. 426,451. Patented Apr. 29, 1890.
WITNESSES ATTOR N EY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT M. JOHNSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,451, dated April 29, 1890.
Application filed October 23, 1889. Serial No. 327,919. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT M. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and usef ul Improvement in Chain-Hooks, which improvementis fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a chain-hook having a device on one member thereof for closing the throat of the hook and locking a ring or link applied thereto, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a chain-hook embodying my invention and illustrating the position thereof when inserting and removing a ring or link. Fig. 2 represents a similar view illustrating the ring or link inserted and locked in the hook.
Similar letters of reference indicatecorresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a hook having at one end an attaQ-hingeyeB, and at the other end a straight portion or member C, which leaves between the shank portion D and said straight portion 0 the throat E for the insertion of the chain link or ring F. On the portion 0 is mounted a sliding head or block G, of ball or other shape, the same closing the throat E when projected to the extremity of said portion 0, the eye B preventing displacement of said block, the latter abutting against said eye when the device is in operative position, as shown in Fig. 2.
The hook may be employed with harness, elevating and 10g chains, the.
To connect the link with the hook, the block G is moved back to open the throat E, as in Fig. 1, when said ring or link H maybe readily passed through the throat E into the loop portion of the hook. The block Gr is now moved out toward the free end of the portion 0, thus closing the throat F and locking said ring or link H, as in Fig. 2.
It is evident that the link may be removed when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1. I
I am aware that it is not new to provide a hook with a straight limb, having a head movable thereon adapted to retain a link on said hook; but I am not aware that the particular construction herein. set forth is old, wherein a hook having an eye at one end, so as to be adapted to be pivotally connected with a suitable support, and having a straight portion, as D, connecting the eye and the curved portion of the said hook, and a straight outer end 0, substantially parallel with the connecting portion D, the said portion 0 having thereon a movable head, as G, which is of such diameter as to permit, when the end of the portion 0 is adjacent to the curve, the'link to be engaged by the hook, the said head then being moved to the outer end of the portion D, where it is adapted to retain the link in place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hook consisting of a straight portion D, with an eye B at one end and a curved portion at the other end, a straight portion G at the outer end, substantially parallel with the straight portion D and a head movable on said straight portion D, said head abutting against said eye and being of such diameter as to close the space between the straight portions 0 and D, said parts being combined substantially as described.
.ROBERT M. JOHNSON.
