PATENT DETACHABLE OR OPEN CHAIN-LINK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 627,892, dated June 27, 1899.
Application filed December 8, 1898. Serial No. 698,627. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, RUDOLPH F. BARTEL, a
- citizen of the United States, residing at Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Detachable or Open Ohain-' Links, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to open chain-links or hook devices that can be readily opened and also securely closed, as set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a link or hook arrangement embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of Fig. 1, partly in section. Figs. 4 and 5 show modifications.
In the drawings is shown. a link with an opening, said link being shown with a closed side 1, leaving the ends 2 and 3 and an opening 4 in a side. A slide or closer 5 when moved into one position will close opening 4 and can be moved or withdrawn to clear said opening, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. This slide or closer is adapted to engage or lock the link at both sides 6 of the opening 4.
By-having the link at both sides of opening 4 hooked or formed as seen at 6 such link will engage the closer 5 at both sides of the opening 4. The closer 5 has shoulders or ofisets 7, and when the shoulders 6 and 7 engage one another at both sides of opening 4 a secure lock is formed, so that neither link end 2 nor 3 can pull or straighten out under strain. W'hen thus locked by closer 5, the link becomes practically as strong as a continuous or unopened link, such link being locked or held at each side of closer 5. The link can be released by compressing either loop 2 or 3 to free a shoulder or offset 6 from engagement and allow closer 5 to be moved or slid away from opening 4. The link being made sufficiently springy will when free spread or move the shoulders 6 outward or to engaging position to normally engage closer 5.
If seen fit, a release can be provided for freeing one or both shoulders 6 from engagement. A release can be formed by a button 8, Fig. 5,having a stem9 seated or sliding in the shell or slide 5. By having a stem 9 bear on a shoulder 6 this stem or its button 8 when suitably moved or pressed will free such shoulleases or stems 9 can be left independent from one another or connected if seen fit. A bar or connection 10 can be made to unite the releases or finger-buttons 8. This bar 10, being made to act as a pusher on shoulders or ends 6, will serve to free the latter from the shoulders or parts 7 when required. The link 1 can be provided with a swivel 11, Fig. 4, which may be found desirable, for example, when the device is used on such articles as watch-chains. This swivel, however, is not necessarily a part of the invention, and the invention is not confined to use on watch-chains, since it can be applied wherever serviceable-as, for example, on harness or elsewhere.
The link and slide can of course be of any suitable size, form, or material.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A chain-link provided with a closed side 1 and having its opposite side provided with an opening and with oppositely-located books 6 at said opening, and a slide mounted on the link'and made to embrace both sides thereof, said'slide having oppositely-located shoulders 7 adapted to respectively engage the hooks 6 to lock both portions of such open side, said open side portions being made to spread or spring away from the closed side to normally hold their hooks locked to the slide while leaving each hook free to be disengaged for moving the slide in either direction, said slide being no'n-rotatively mounted on the link for keeping its shoulders in line or plane with the hooks substantially as described.
2. An open chain-link having an opening in one side, in combination with a slide embracing said link and adapted to engage the link at both sides of the opening therein, and a pusher mounted in said slide and adapted to disengage the link and slide, substantially as described. 1
3. An open chain-link having an opening in one side and provided with a slide embracing said link and engaging both sides of the opening therein and having a pusher to engage the link and release it from the slide, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
RUDOLPH F. BARTEL.
