THE NORRIS PETERS (30.. PHOTC-LITHQ, WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PTENT OFFICE.
ANDREW B. FOANS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BAG-LOCK.
iaaaaae.
Application filed March 11, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW B. FOANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bag-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for looking a bag and it comprehends means carried by the handle of the bag for actuating the lock to open the bag.
The device for retracting the lock to open the bag is operated by pulling a portion of the handle a predetermined distance to engage the lock. In a lock of this kind a person who carries the bag can readily detect anybody trying to open the bag without the consent of the owner.
The fundamental object of the invention is to provide the flexible handle with means whereby when a portion of the handle is drawn it cooperates with the lock to open the bag.
The novel features of the invention are more fully described in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a bag embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken along the line 00 0a of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the latch retracted. Fig. 4: is a front elevation of a jaw. Fig. 5 is a detail view of a strap. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of a modification. Fig. 7 is a front elevation showing one of the jaws of the preceding figure.
In this drawing the letter a designates a bag which is provided with jaws b and c hinged together in the usual way. The jaw Z) has mounted on it a pair of loops (Z and a flexible strap handle 6 guided in the loops. Stops f secured at each end of the handle limit the movement of the handle relative to the loops.
As indicated in Figs. 1 to 5, the jaw 72 has a lock consisting of a latch g mounted by means of pins h to the under portion of the jaw. The latch has slots 2' for limiting the sliding movement of the latch. A spring 7' is adapted to normally press the latch against the stems of the pins. The end portion of the latch has a hook is for engagement with a similar hook m carried by the jaw c. The latch also carries a stud n projecting from the top of the aw b and adj a- Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 823,939.
will slide the latch forward so that when the jaw c is closed against the other jaw the two jaws will lock together.
By pulling the handle as shown in Fig. 4 to engage the stud it shifts the gripping portion of the handle, so that if an unauthorized person with intent to get at the contents of the bag pulls the handle the person holding the bag will be aware of the itaclii that somebody is tampering with the As shown in the drawing the stud 'n, is hidden under the strap, and the loop covers both the strap and the stud so that it will be impossible to reach the stud from the outside of the bag, and tampering with the lock is avoided.
As indicated in Figs. 6 and 7, the lock includes a swinging latch member ;0 having an opening 9 for engagement with a hook 7' formed on the jaw member 0. The latch member is normally held in engagement with the hook by means of springs s fixed to the jaw member 6. In this construction the handle carries projecting lugs t which when in engagement with the stud 91. moves the same downwardly to oscillate the latch and disengage the hook 1" so that the jaws can be opened. There are two of the lugs secured to the strap so that either one or both ends of the strap can be slid through the loops to engage the studs.
I claim:
1. The combination with a bag provided with a lock, of a flexible strap handle slidingly mounted on the bag, and means carried by the lock and engaged by slidingly drawing one end of the handle to shorten the grip portion of the strap and open the bag.
2. The combination with a bag provided with a lock, of a flexible strap handle slidingly mounted on the bag, and means carried by the lock and engaged by slidingly drawing one or both ends of the handle to 4. The combination with a bag provided with a pair of jaws, of a flexible strap handle slidingly mounted on one of the jaws, a
lug secured to the handle, devices carried by the jaws for normally locking the bag, 15 and a stud carried by one of the locklng devices and projecting from a jaw for sliding engagement with the lug when one end of the strap is slidingly pulled to open the bag.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 20 my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
