NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL ROSENZWEIG, OF NEVV-YORK, N. Y.
FRAME FOR POCKET-BOOKS, 80G.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,688, dated November 28, 1893.
Application filed July 28, 1893- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL ROSENZWEIG, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Frame for Pocket-Books and Like Articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved frame more especially designed for use on pocket books, satchels and other bags and similar articles, and which is simple and durable, and arranged to disguise the locking device of the frame.
The invention consists of a hinged frame, a lock for holding the frame members closed, a fixed pin on the said frame, and a springpressed sleeve over the said pin and normally inclosing the point of the pin.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improve ment, Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the frame in an open position; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the frame with part in section.
The improvedframe is providedwith the two members A and A, made in the usual U- form and hinged together at A as is plainly shown in the drawings. On the middle portion of the frame member A is formed a downwardly extending lug A adapted to be engaged by the hook 13 formed on. the inner end of a fiat lock bar B, having a rounded shank B mounted to turn in the other frame A, so that the lock bar can be conveniently turned to engage or disengage its hook B with or from the lug A The outer end of the lock bar B is formed with a head 13 carrying a ring 0, to enable the operator to conveniently turn the said lock bar for locking and unlocking the frame members. A spring D is fastened to the inside of the middle portion of the frame mem- Serial 110,481,736. (N0 model.)
her A, the said spring engaging, with its free end, the flat lock bar B, so as to normally hold the same in position to engage the hook B Willi the lug A the ring standing vertically as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In order to open the lock bar, the operator swings the ring horizontally and then turns the same to turn the lock bar B, to move the hook B out of engagement with the lug A By pulling on the ring while holding the other member A, the frame will readily open. As soon as the operator releases the ring 0, the latter swings back into a vertical position, and at the same time the spring D returns the lock bar B to its normal position above described. Now, when the operator closes the two frames the hook B readily snaps on the lug A On the middle portion of the frame member A is arranged an upwardly extending small casing A in which is fitted to slide vertically a sleeve E resting with its inner end on a spring F, inclosed within the casing A. The sleeve E incloses a pin G fixed to the frame A and of such a length that its point is within the sleeve E and is, consequently, not visible from the outside, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 2 and 4. When, however, the sleeve E is pressed the sleeve will slide inward, so that the point of the pin will prick the pressing finger. This arrangement is for the purpose of deceiving unauthorized persons tryingto open theframe, as the device has, to all appearances, the form of the ordinary lock employed on pocket books and similar articles.
As previously described, the frame can only be opened by manipulating the ring (3; and pressing on the sleeve E will not open the frame, but, on the contrary, will injure the pressing finger.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- l. A frame for pocket books and like articles, comprising hinged frame members, a lock for holding the members closed, a fixed pin on the said frame, and a spring-pressed sleeve over the said pin and normally inclosing the point thereof, substantially as shown and described.
2. A frame for pocket books and like artithe head of the said lock bar for turning the cles, comprising hinged frame members, of same, substantially as shown and described. which one is formed with a lug, a 100]: bar mounted to turn in the other frame member 5 and provided with a hook adapted to engage Witnesses:
the said lug, a spring pressing on a flat por- THEO. G. HOSTER, tion of the said lock bar, and a ring held in O. SEDGWIOK.
