Be it known that I, B ENNO voM EIGEN, a citizen of the United States,i'esiding at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following' to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specilication.

This invention relates to improvements in bag-fasteners to be employed with that class of bag-frames which are especially adapted to sateliels, chatelaines, and other bags; and the invention has for its primary object to provide a neat, simple, and strongly-made bagfastener which is especially adapted for use with a pair of hinged bag-frame sections which have their marginal edges when the bag-frame sections are closed in abutting instead of the usual overlapping' relation, the catch-retaining shell or casing of the fastener being secured directly upon the one frame-section, with the holding-catch loosely arranged in said casing and retained in its operative position by a very simple arrangement of a spring with which the said catch oscillates when operated, and the other frame-section heilig' provided with a simple holding lug or post with which the said catch is forcibly sprung in holding engagement with a decided snap.

The principal purpose of this invention is to provide a simply-constructed but durable bag lock or fastener, the same comprising` but three essential parts, all of which, as will hereinafter appear, and a quick and ready assemblage of the parts of the fastener is the result. i

With the various objects of my present invention in view the same consists in the novel bag-fastener hereinafter set forth; and, furthermore, this invention consists in the various arrangements and combinations of the parts thereof, all of which will be fully described in the accompanying speciiication and then linally embodied in the clauses of the claim thereof which are appended to and form an essential part of this specification.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are a top edge and side view, respectively, of a bag-frame having a pair of abutting frame-sections and provided with a bag-fastener embodying the principles of the present invention. Eig. 3 is a bottom view of portions of the two bag-frame sections represented in their separated relation with a bottom view of the said. bag-fastener secured in its position upon the one bag-frame section. Eig. 4C is a central vertical section taken on line 4 et in said Eig. 2, representing the holding-catch of the fastener upon the one frame-section in itsloclted or holding engagement with the holding lug or post upon the other bag-frame section; and Fig. 5 is a similar sectional representation of the said parts, but representing the said holding-catch and the post or lug in their disengaged relation to permit of the separation or opening of the two frame-sections. Fig. 6 is a bottom View of the said bag-fastener, illustrating the general arrangements of the parts. Fig. 7 is a perspective View of the lock-casing, and Figs. 8 and 9 are two perspective views of the holding-catch and spring before being' arranged in their operative positions in said lock-casing.

Similar characters of reference are employed in the said above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now to the said drawings, the refe erenee characters l and 2 indicate a pair of bag-frame sections which are hinged or pivotally connected at their lower end portions, as at 3 and as illustrated in the drawings. The preferred form of bag-frame with which I intend to use the bag-fastener embodying the principles of my present invention is that class of frames in which the frame-sections l and 2 are made with the abutting frame por tions or members 4: and 5, as clearlyillustrated in Figs. 1, 3, 4, and 5; but it will be evident that the bag-fastener may also be used with other forms of bag-frames to be used for purses, pocket-books,satchels, chatelaines,and traveling-bags.

The bag lock or fastener, as is indicated in the various figures of the drawings, comprises a suitable shell or casing 6, of any desired ornamentation and configuration, the said casing or shell being' made with the

7 and 8 and being preferably bounded upon its lower surface by a marginal projection 9, substantially as illustrated in- Figs. 6 and 7 In the front the said shell or casing 6 is made with an opening 10, and contiguous to the said opening 10 and extending in inward directions into the said shell or casing 6 at right angles, or approximately so, to the marginal projection 9, are a pair of lugs or ears 11. rIhe arrangement of these features is more clearly represented in Fig. 7 of the drawings, and it will be seen from an inspection of the said figure that the inner surfaces of the

7 and 8 are each curved, as at 12, and that the main portion of the said shell or casing is formed with a chamber 13. The holding-catch to be used with this shell or casing 6 is indicated by the reference character 14, and it consists, essentially, of a plate-like body 15, provided with ears or lugs 16, extending longitudinally from the edges 17 of the said body. The said body 15 is provided along one of its longitudinal edges with an upwardlyextending finger-piece 18, and upon its other longitudinal edge the said body 15 is formed with a curved clamping or holding member 19, in which is secured a spring-bar 20, having a straight end portion 21 and a suitably curved or bent and hook-shaped end 22, substantially as illustrated. When the holding-catch and its spring are to be arranged in their operative positions in the casing or shell 6, the body portion 15 of the holding-catch is loosely arranged in the chamber 13, with an ear or lug 16 of said body 15 arranged directly above an ear or lug 11, connected with the said shell or casing 6, as illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings, the finger-piece 18 of the holdingcatch extending from and in an upward direction directly in front of the said opening 10 in the shell or casing 6, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 to 6, inclusive. At the same time the end portion 21 of the spring-bar 2O is placed against the curved surface 12 of the end member 8 of the shell or casing 6, while the opposite portion of the said spring 20, which is provided with the curved or hook-shaped end 22, is twisted, as at 23, by placing the curved or hook-shaped end 22 of the spring 20 around one of the rivets or pins 24, by means of which the end portions of the said shell or casing 6 are secured upon the upper surface of the portion 5 of the frame-section 2. Thus the holding-catch 14 by the distorted arrangement of the spring 20 is operatively retained in the chamber 13 of the shell or casing 6 in the position indicated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, the spring itself serving as a means of pivotal with the straight edge 27 of a post or lug 26 suitably secured upon the portion 4 of the frame-section 1 the said body-plate 15 is made with an opening 28, having a straight edge 29, which is adapted to be brought in holding engagement with the straight edge 27 of the post or lug 26 when the frame-

1 and 2 are closed upon or against each other, as indicated in Fig. 4 of the drawings.

To separate or open the frame-sections, all that is necessary is to apply a slight pressure in the direction of the arrow rv upon the fingerpiece 18 of the holding-catch, (see Fig. 6,) whereby the said body-plate 15 is sufliciently raised to lift the edge 29 of the opening 28 above the post or 'lug 26, the pressing action upon the linger-piece resulting in the final separation of the two frame-

1 and 2, as will be clearly evident.

From the foregoing description of my invention it will be clearly seen that I have devised a very simple construction of bag-fastener in the form of a lock or holding-catch in which the parts have been reduced to a minimum, the parts aside from the fastening pins or rivets and the holding post or lug having been reduced to three parts-namely, the main shell or casing, the holding-catch, and a spring.

I am aware that some changes may be made in the details of the arrangement and construction of the said parts without departing from the scope of my present invention. Hence Ido not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and details of the construction of the said parts.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A bag-fastener for a frame having hinged frame-sections, said fastener comprising a casing adapted to be secured to one of said framesections, and having a chambered portion provided with an opening in its side, an upwardlybowed spring-bar in said casing and a catchplate connected with said spring-bar, the said spring-bar having its one free end held in a xed position upon the frame-section and the opposite end portion of said spring being in slidable engagement with a portion of the said casing so as to normally force the forward end of the catch-plate directly back of the lower portion of the opening in said casing, and an upwardly-projecting iinger-piece extending from the opening in the side of the casing, said upwardly-extending finger-piece serving asa closure to said opening and the said catchplate having holding means located near the forward end of the catch substantially at the juncture of the finger-piece with said body for engagement with the other frame-section, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
