To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANZ A. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag- Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.

The present invention has reference to improvements in that class of bag fasteners for bag frames, which are especially adapted for pocket books, satchels, purses and the like, and the invention relates more fully to a novel construction of a looking or holding catch connected with the frame sections thereto.

The main purpose of this invention is to provide a pocket book, purse or other frame, and its latch or catch, which shall be neat in appearance, and shall be of a simple, strong and durable construction, with a view of furnishing a bag or purse frame having a novel construction of spring-actuated holding catch or latch which can be easily manipulated and one which is reinforced and not liable to breakage or disarrangement of its parts.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary front view of a purse or bag frame and catch embodying the principles of this invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are fragmentary plan views of the frame and catch, the hinge or pivoted frame members being represented in a partly open relation to each other in Fig. 3. Figs. 4 and 5 are vertical sectional views taken on lines rcm of Fig. 1 of the frame and catch, the hinge or pivoted frame members being represented in a partly open relation to each other. Fig. 6 is a similar vertical section of the frame members and catch, the hinge or pivoted members being represented in a closed relation to each other. Fig. 7 is a view of the under side of the latch detached from the frame member, with an end member to the right. of it detached from the latch and in line therewith, and a modified form of an end member to the left of it,

in the drawings, a and a indicate the usual pair of frame sections which are pivotally secured at their lower end portions by means of suitable pins or rivets b, or they may be pivotally connected with each other in any other well-known manner. One of said frame sections as a is provided in its outer edge with suitable holes or perforations common in bag frames, (not shown) through which are passed certain holding or clamping prongs or ears 0 of the member d, said prongs or cars being adapted to be closed down upon the inner surface of said frame section a to secure said member d to the frame section a. As illustrated, more especially in Fig. 7, said member d is provided with an extension or trunnion 0. Two of these members are secured in alinement upon one of the bag frame members, and the extensions or trunnions thereof are adapted to take into apertures of the holding or locking catch g which is pivotally connected between the members d. Instead of the member d provided with the trunnion e, I may use the member (5 (see Fig.- 7) which is provided with a hole for the reception of one end of the rod d, which is adapted to pass through the apertures j of the latch, the other end of the rod to engage with a similar member d in alinement with the first named member, thereby pivotally connecting the latch with said members. Said catch or holding device consists essentially of a shell or casing it provided with end apertures f for pivotal engagement with the trunnions e of the members (Z. The shell or casing It is provided in its oppositely arranged and longitudinally extending marginal edge 2' with a suitable finger piece or lift y. This finger piece or lift y is provided with a form of holding means 70 with which a holding device, preferably in the form of a bar Z upon the frame section a, can be brought in holding engagement by forcing the said holding means L over the bar Z as clearly illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings, when the said locking catch is held in. its normal initial position by a suitable spring, in the manner to be presently described. The bar Z is also provided with suitable ears 0, said ears 0 being adapted to be closed down upon the inner surface of the frame section a to secure said bar to the frame section. This spring consists generally of a spring bar at made from wire, the same being clamped in its opera tive position upon the inner face of the casing it by a pair of clamping or holding lugs n, and the said spring having at its one end a right-angled member a resting upon the face of the said body of the casing it, and said spring being provided at its opposite end with another right-angled member 0, which when the said locking catch 9 is arranged in its operative position between the members (Z and upon the frame section a is passed through an aperture in said frame section, and thus causes the said catch, in its normal initial position, always to rest in the position indicated in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 6 of the drawings, so that when the two frame sections a and a are brought into their closed relation, the holding device or bar Z upon the frame section a, will ride against the lower portion p of the finger piece or lift j, thereby slightly raising the latter until the two frame sections a and a are brought together as shown in Fig. 6, when the catch 9 will be sprung over and in holding engagement with the bar Z, with the holding means 70 resting against the back or straight side of the locking bar Z as shown in Fig. 6, in which holding engagement, the parts are held by the action of the spring at until the finger piece or lift j is raised by exerting pressure against the finger piece j in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 6 of the drawings, when the two frame sections can once more be brought into their separated relation.

Experience has demonstrated that the or ganization above described, is a practical and eliicientone for accomplishing the ends sought by this invention. The construction may, however, be Varied in detail by those skilled in such matters, without departing from the invention.

The upward movement of the catch 9 in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 6, is limited by the spring at which when the catch is raised, contacts with the inner rear longi tudinal marginal edge of the shell 72, of the catch g, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings.

I claim:.

In a bag or purse frame, the combination with a. pair of hinged frame sections, bearings secured in alinement upon one of said frame sections, and a spring-actuated catch in pivotal engagement with said bearings, and in normal retaining contact with one of said frame members, said spring-actuated catch being provided with holding lugs, the spring being secured in said holding lugs and so arranged against rotation in the catch, and on the frame section to which the catch is secured, that the lower rear edge of the catch strikes the spring at that point where it is secured to the frame section, when the catch is raised, so as to limit the upward movement of the same.
