To all whom/it may concern Be it known that I, Bnivjno VOM EIGEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Frame Fasteners; andIdo hereby declare the followin'g to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference 1 marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates, generally, to improvements in bag-frame fasteners and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel spring-controlled fastener or catch for the hinged, sections of bag-frames of the various kinds.
The present invention has for its principal object to provide a neat and simply constructed bag-frame fastener orcatch of the general character hereinafter more fully set forth, the parts of which have been reduced to a minimum and cannot readily get out of order, are easily assembled in their operative relation, and are readily manipulated.
The invention has for its further purpose to provide a pivotally disposed knob or fingerpiece, in the formof a bag-frame catch, which is adapted to be secured directly upon the upper portion of one of the frame-sec tions, the knob or fingerpiece being in the form of a hollow element into which extends a fixed post and is provided with a spring co-acting with said post and with a portion of the interior wall of the knob, to permitof a rearwardly pivotal movement of the said knob, and also to return the knob or fingerpiece to its normal initial position after manipulation. Other objects of'the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the followmg detailed description of the invention.
With the various objects of the present invention in view, the. said invention con sists, primarily, in the novel bag-frame catch or fingerpiece hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the vari ous devices and parts, as well as in the dc tails ofthe construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification. The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front elevation of the framesections of a bag-frame in their closed relation, with a bag-frame catch or fastener representing one embodiment of the principles of, the present invention, the same being also shown in front'elevation; and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional representation of the hinged bag-framesections represented in an open relation, with the bag-frame catch or fastener shown in side elevation, in its piv otally mounted position. upon one of said frame-sections. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section, on an enlarged scale, said section being taken on line 33 in said Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section, taken on line 41 in said Fig. 4., with the post and spring disposed within the hollow knob or fingerpiece represented in top view. Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical section of a cylindrical box-like element employed with the hollow knob or finger-piece, shown detached from said knob or fingerpiece; and Fig. 6 is a view of the same looking in the direction of the arrow at in said Fig. 5. Fig. 7 isfafrontview,-Fig. 8 a rear view, and Fig. 9. a side elevation of the post employed with the bag frame catch or fastener, but shown detached from the frame-section.

Referring now to the said drawings, the reference- characters 1 and 2 indicatethe usual bag-frame sections which are hinged in any suitable manner, as at 3. Suitably mounted upon the, upper central portion of one of said frame-sections, as 1, is a post 4. said post being provided with downwardly extending rivet-lugs 5 which project through suitably disposed holes or perforations in said portion of the frame-section 1 and are upset or riveted upon the lower surface-portion of said frame-section, substantially as shown in Fig. 3'of the drawings. At its upper endportion the said post 4 has a finger 6 projecting in a forward direction from the frontjface of the post, thesaid frontface of the post being also formed near the'lower portion of the post with a projection, as 7, having an inclined or tapering surface, as 8. box-like element, and held and secured in its operative position above the upper face of the frame-section 1, by the arrangement of a coiled spring in the manner and forthe purposes to be hereinafter more fully stated.
The assembled arrangement of said box-like element with'relation to the frame-section 1 and the post 4 is that shown in said Fig. 3, and is such, that one-half of said box-like member will extend beyond the edge-portion-16 of the frame-section 1, and will lap over upon the other frame-section 2, when the latter is closed against the framesection 1, so as to enable the bringing of a lock-stud or projection, as 17, upon the frame-section 2 into locked or retaining en- .gagementwith the bounding edge-portion 18 of the base 10 of said box-like element, as will be'clearly'evident from an inspection of said Fig. 3 of the drawings. Mounted upon the previously-mentioned finger 6 of the post 4 is. one end of the above-mentioned coiled spring 19, said spring having its other end bearing upon a portion of the inner surface of the wall 12, opposite said finger 6, whereby the'parts will beretained in their normal initial positions, indicated in said Fig. 3, as will be clearly evident. Suit ably mounted upon said wall 12, with its lower marginal edge resting upon the annu- 1211' bead 11, by being pressed over said wall and held by friction, or otherwise suitably secured in its position, is a hollow knob, as 20, which forms the fingerpiece of the bagframe fasteneror catch, as willbe clearly evident. Normally, the spring 19 retains the complete bag-frame catch or fastener thus provided, with relation to the frame-sections .1 and2 in the position indicated in Fig. 3
.; 6B foflthe. drawings, with the lock-stud 17 in its retained engagement with the edge portion 18 of the base 10, as above stated, when'the frame-section 2 is closed against, the framesection 1, the lock-st'ud' 17 having a tapering portion which, as will be understood from an inspection of the drawings, allowsthe base 10 to ride over said tapering surface and the spring causing sald base to spring into locked engagement with said lock-studj To disengage the said base 10 from its holding engagement with the lock-stud, so as to permit the hinged frame- sections 1 and 2 to be brought into their separatedor openrelation, a slight pressure upon the portion 21 of the knob20, will bring thelatter into its tilted position, indicated in Fig.2 of the drawings, so that the two frame-sections can be easily opened, as will be clearly evident. The purpose of the previouslymentioned projection 9 extending from the rear face of the fixed post 1 is to permit of the pivotal 'movementf of the knob or fingerpiece and the cylindrical box-like element connected therewith, the lowervoff-set 22 of said projection with which the bounding edge 23 of the base 10 is brought into "contact limiting the pivotal movement of the catch or fastener, as willbe evident, and

relation to the frame-section 1. a The upwardly projecting corner-portions 15 have sufficientspring-like action or resiliency, to allow for the above-mentioned pivotalmove ment of the base 10 and incidentally of the entire box-like element. After the knob 20 has been tilted, and upon the removal of further pressure from the portion 21 of said knob, the compressed and slightly distorted spring 19, in assumlng its normal position,
will return the raised-knob or fingerpiece,
and the parts connected therewith, again assume their normal initialpositions indicated in said Fig. 3, as will be clearly evident. Of course I am aware that some changes may be made inthe general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well asin the details of the con- ,struction of the latter, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth ln'the foregoing specification, and as defined in'the clauses of theclaims which are appended to the said specification.

A bagframe fastener comprising a hollow knob, a post adapted to be secured upon a frame-section, said hollow knob being capable of a pivotal movement independent of and separate from said post, a finger extending forwardly from said post, a coiled spring within said knob having one end arranged over said finger and its other end in engagement with the wall of said knob, and means connected with said post and said knob to permit of and limit the pivotal movement of said knob, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

A bag-frame fastener comprising a hollow knob, a post adapted to be secured upon a frame-section, a cylindrical box-like element connected with said knob, said element comprising a base having an opening and bounding corner-portions, said post being provided with a forwardly extending projection upon which said corner-portions rest and are in engagement, a spring within said knob and in engagement with said post, and means connected with said post and said knob to permit of and limit the pivotal movement of said knob, substantially as and for the purposes set forth 6. A bag-frame fastener comprising a hollow knob, a post adapted to be secured upon a frame-section, a cylindrical box-like element connected with said knob, said element comprising a base having an opening and bounding corner-portions, said post being provided with a forwardly extending projection upon which said, corner-portions rest and are in engagement, a finger extending forwardly from said post, a coiled spring within said knob having one end arranged over said finger and its other end in engagement with the wall of said knob, and means connected with said post and said knob to permit of and limit the pivotal movement of said knob, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

A bag-frame fastener comprising a hollow knob, a post adapted to be secured upon a frame-section, a cylindrical box-like element connected with said knob, said element comprising a base having an opening and bounding corner-portions, said post being provided with a forwardly extending projection upon which said corner-portions rest and are in engagement, a finger extending forwardly from said post, a coiled spring Within said knob having one end arranged over said finger and its other end in engagement with the wall of said knob, a rearwardly extending projection upon said post, and means connected with said knob extending beneath said projection to permit of and limit the pivotal movement of said knob, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
