To all Le/0m t may concern Be it known that I, ARY KAUFMANN,a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention has reference, generally, to improvements in that class of locks which are ordinarily employed with the hinged frame-sections of bags, suit-cases, and the like; and, the invention relates. more particularly, to a novel construction of safety-latch or lock for bag-frame sections, with a view of providing a simply constructed and positively acting construction, which can be readily manipulated so as to retain the hinged frame-sections in their locked relation, or for permitting the frame-sections to be brought into their separated or opened relation.
The invention has for its further object to provide a novel construction of bag-frame lock or latch in which the bolt-operating mechanism is concealed in a casing, and the casing being provided with a spring-controlled and hinged cover-plate with which said bolt is connected and moves,'the parts being released from their normally locked relation by the manipulation of a push-piece extending from the end of the casing, and the part-s being brought into their opened or closed relation, in either case, with a positive snap Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly mentioned will be understood from the following detailed description of the invention,
With the various objects of the invention in view, the invention consists, primarily, in the novel bag-frame lock or latch hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said speciiication.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top or plan View of a portion of the upper part of a bag and framesections, showing, also in top a plan view, a bag-lock made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side-representation of the baglock and a longitudinal vertical representation of the frame-sections of the bag, the parts being shown in their normally locked relations; and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the lock and frame-sections, with the hinged bolt carrying cover-plate shown in its raised position, to permit of the separation or opened relation of the bag-frame sections. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical sectional representation of the closed bag-frame sections, and an elevation of the one end of the baglock or latch in its secured position upon one of said frame-sections; and Fig. 5 is a similar sectional representation of the closed bag-frame sections, and an elevation of the other end of said bag-lock or latch. Fig. 16 is a bottom view of the said bag-lock or latch, similar' to that represented in said Fig. 14, showing the parts of the mechanism in their ope ated and released relations; vand Fig. 17 -is a central longitudinal vertical section of the parts represented in said Fig. 16.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to Figs. 1 to 10 inclusive, the reference-characters 1 aiid 2 indicate the top-portions of the usual pivotally connected or hinged bag-frame sections, the frame-section 1 being provided with suitably-disposed lug-receiving holes or openi-ngs 3, and the frame-sections 1 a-nd 2 being respectively provided with registering boltreceiving holes or openings 1 and ll, as will be seen from an inspection of Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings.
The bag-lock or latch which is to be mounted upon the outer face of the upper frame-section 1 consists, essentially of a suitably shaped casing or box, comprising longitudinally7 extending sides 5, . ends 6 and 7, and a top 8. Extending from .the lower marginal edges of the said ends 6 and 7 are suitably formed fastening lugs 9, which are inserted in the lug-receiving holes 3 of the frame-section 1, and are suitablyT bent against the inner face of said frame-section, for permanently securing said casing or box in position upon the upper face of said frame-section. rlhe end 6 of said casing or box is made with a linger or push-piece receiving opening, as 10, and in the upper portion of the end 7 and the top 8, at points near said end 7, are suitably formed openings, as 11, for the reception of suitable pivot-ears, in the manner and for the purposes to be presently set forth. The top 8 is made with a centrally disposed elongated bolt-receiving opening 1:2, and at one side, in said top, and located near one of the longitudinally extending sides 5 of the casing or box, is another longitudinally extending elongated opening, as 13. Extending laterally across the inner or chambered part of the casing or box, a point beneath and in front of the openings 11 is a pivot-pin 14, said pin having its end-portions suitably secured in correspondingly disposed holes or perforations 15 in the respective sides 5 of the casing or box. Suitably disposed upon the upper face of the top S is a bolt-carrying plate 16 provided at one end with downwardly projecting and perforated pivot-ears or lugs 17 which extend into and through the openings 11 and are Vpivotally mounted upon the pivot-pin 14, for connecting said bolt-carrying plate 16 in a hinge-like manner with the upper surface of said top 8 of the casing or box. Suitably disposed and secured upon the lower face of said plate 16, by means of fastening lugs 18. or other suitable securing means, is a suitably formed bolt, as 19, said bolt extending into and projecting through the elongated opening 12 in the top S, and being adapted to .move in said opening 12, as will be clearly 'evident from an inspection of Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9 .of the drawings. The marginal edge-portion Q0 of said bolt 19 is convexly curved, as at 21, and near its lower and preferably angularly pointed end 22, there is a suitably formed offset, as 23, which provides a stop and which is adapted to engage the under surface of the top 8 at a point Q41, see Figs. 8 and 9, when the bolt-carrying plate 16 has been brought into its raised position. ln its opposite edge-portion 25 at a point suitably near the under face of the Lplate 16, the said edge-portion 25 is provided with a receiving recess, as 26, one edge-portion of which is also preferably curved, as at 27. Extending laterally across the inner or ohambered part 4of the casing or box, with its end-portions suitably secured in perforations 2S in the sides .of the casing or box 5, is another pin 29, upon which is mounted a coiled spring 30, Ihaving one end-portion 31 bearing upon the under face of the top 8, and having its other end-portion 32 extending upwardly through the elongated opening 13 in said top 8 and bearing forcibly against the lower face of the hinged boltcarrying plate 16, substantially as shown in Figs. 3, 6, 8 and 10 of the drawings.
Slidably arranged within the casing `or box, and longitudinally guided between the inner faces of the opposite sides 5 is a boltretaining and releasing plate or slide provided with a centrally disposed elongated hole or opening 34, located directly beneath the hole or opening 12 in the top 8, and through which hole or opening' 3ft the bolt 19 also extends .and is movably arranged therein. At its edge, near the 4end 6 of the casing or box, the said plate or slide 33 has a push or finger-piece, as 35, which extends into and through t-he opening 10 in said end 6, so as to be manipulated from the outside of the casing or box, to force the plate or slide 33 in a direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 6. At its opposite end, the said plate or slide 33 has a klinger or projection,
as 36, which is slidably disposed in the space b-etween the upper part of the pin 29 and the lower face of the top 8, and which finger `or )ro`ection with the )ush or linger iiece 35, positively retains the plate or slide 33 in slidable and operative relation within the casing or box, as will be fully understood from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings. That the said plate or slide 35, after it has been pushed in the direction of the arrow .r in said F ig. 6, and into the position indicated in Figs. 6 and 9, will automatically ret-urn to its normal initial position, represented in Figs. 6 and 7, there is arranged upon the previouslymentioned pin 29, another coiled spring 37, the one free end-portion of which bears upon therunder face of the top 8, and the other end-portion of the spring 3i" being suitably bent, as at 38, and having its end 89 secured to a suitable projection, as 40, with which the plate or slide 33 is provided, and whereby, the force of the bent portion 38 of the spring 37 against the face of said projection e0 will cause the plate or slide 33 to be returned to its normal position, when the pressure is removed from the lingerpiece 35. Under normal conditions, when the hinged plate 16 and its bolt 19 are in the positions indicated in said Figs. 6 and 7, the edgeportion 41 of the elongated opening 34 in the plate or slide 33 will be in retaining engagement with the bolt 19, by having entered the receiving recess 26, as shown, so that the said bolt 19 and the hinged boltcarrying plate 16 will be prevented from moving outwardly. When the parts are in these relative positions, the bolt prevents the separation of the two frame-sections l and 2, as will be evident. vWhen, however, pressure is applied upon the push or fingerpiece S5, and the plate or slide 33 is moved in the direction of the arrow m, then the edge-portion el is removed from within and from its retaining engagement with the receiving recess 26 of the bolt 19, and iinmediately the spring 30 causes the plate 16 and its bolt 19 to be forced outwardly into their released relation indicated in Figs. S and 9, with the stop 23 of the bolt in its arresting engagement with the edge-portion 2-1- of the top 8. llllhen in this position, the end 22 of the bolt has been withdrawn from the openings i and 5 in the respective framesections 1 and 2, and the hinged sections of the bag-frame can thereupon be brought into their separated or opened relation, as will be clearly understood. When the hinged bolt-carrying plate 16 and its bolt 19 are moved from the position indicated in Fig. 9 to the position represented in Fig. 7, the part 411, of the plate or slide 83 again, and automatically, enters into its holding or retaining engagement with the receiving recess 26 of the bolt 19.
vReferring now to the modified construction of bag-lock or latch illustrated in Figs. 11 to it?" inclusive, the casing or box comprises a pair of longitudinally extending sides 4Q, ends 43,V and a top il-4t, the said top 'being preferably provided in a part of its upper surface with a longitudinally extending depression or recess, as 115, for the purposes to be presently set forth. The said depressed portion or recess i5 is also provided with a centrally disposed elongated opening', as 46, the top Liet being also formed with an opening 47, and a pair of outwardly and upwardly extending pivot-ears 48. 1Within the said casing or box, and extending laterally beneath said opening 4e?, is a pin 49, the end-portions of which are suitably secured in said pivot-ears 48. The casing or box, in this instance, is also provided at its ends with downwardly extending fastening` lugs 5G, by means otl which it is secured upon the upper surface of the frame-section l., in the manner of the construction represented in said Figs. 1 to 10 inclusive. Pivotally mounted upon said pin L19, by means of suitable pivot ears 52, is a bolt-carrying plate 5l, said plate being of such width, so that, when it is in its closed position, it registers with and is fitted in said depression or recess 115, and in that position its upper face will be tlush with the upper face of the top all. Suitably mounted upon said pin 49 is a coiled spring 53, having one endportion 54 extending and bearing upon the upper surface of said depressed part 45, see ll`igs. 1l and 16, and said opening having its other mid-portion bearing forcibly against the lower face of said hinged bolt.- carrying plate Slidably arranged within the casing or box is a bolt-retaining and releasing slide, the slide in this ease consisting of a cross-bar 56, and a pair of wire-like roes 57, which extend through and are slidably arranged in suitably disposed holes or perforations 58 in one of the ends t3 of the casing or box, the projecting ends of said rods 57 being connected by a member 59 which forms a suitable push or fingerpiece, adapted to be manipulated from the outside of the casing or box, to force said slide in an inward direction. The opposite end-portions 60 of said rods 5S project from said crossbar 56 into a chamber 6l, formed by the top l.L-land a plate suitably connected by a pin or rivet and arranged in said chamber, between the end-portions 6() of said rods 57, so as to bear against said cross-bar and the inner face of the other end i3 of the casing or box, are a pair of coiled springs 6ft, the purpose of said springs being` to return said slide to its normal initial position, after pressure Vhas been removed from the push or lingerpiece 59, as will be clearly understood from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings. opening l@ and between the rods 57 of .the I hear its upper portion, and in thel slide. conveXly-shaped edge-portion 6T of :the boltI G6 a cut-away or lrecessed receiving portion, as GS, with which the cross-bar 56 of the spring-controlled slide normally in holding' engagement, so as to maintain the hinged bolt-carrying plate 5l, and its bolt, in their closed relation, represented in TFigs. ll, l2, ll and l5. :it its lower end-portion, the said bolt 65 is made with a suitably formed projection, as which is moved into retaining `e k ement with the edgeportion of the cross-bar 56, when the boltengaging and retaining slide has been pushed in the direction of the arrow y, in said ig. l5, so as to move the cross-bar 56 out of its holding' engagement with the recessed receiving `portion 68 of the bolt 66, to retain the hinged bolt-carrying plate 5l and the bolt 66 in the positions shown in Figs. 13 and l? of the drawings, and to Ithereby permit of the pivotal separation of :the bag-frame sections, as will be clearly understood.
The manipulation and operation of the parts comprising the construction of bagframe lock or latch illustrated in said Figs. l1 to 17 inclusive will be clearly understood from the foregoing description and from an inspection of said last-mentioned figures of the drawings. and need not, therefore, be further described.
Of course, I am fully aware, that changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without `departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended to the said specilication. Hence, l do not li-mit myself to the exact arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I conne myself tothe exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying' drawings.

A bag-frame lock comprising' a casing provided in its top with an opening, a boltcarrying plate upon the upper surface of said casing and hinged thereto, a bolt eX- tending downwardly from said plate and through the opening in said casing, a manually operated means connected with said casing but independent of said plate and bolt for normally maintaining a closed and Losa, 124
locked relation of said plate and bolt with relation to said casing, but being adapted when voperated to bring said plate and bolt into released relation, and means coperatwith said plate and bolt-retaining means for automatically raising said plate and bolt.
2. A bag-frame lock comprising a casing provided in its .top with an opening, a spring-,controlled bolt-carrying plate upon the upper surface .of said casing and hinged thereto, a bolt extending downwardly from said plate and through the opening in said cas-ing, a manually operated spring-controlled means connected with said casing but independent of said plate and vbolt for vnormally maintaining a closed and locked relation of said plate and bolt with relation to said casing, but being adapted when operated to bring said plate and bolt into released relation, and means cooperating with said plate and holt-retaining means for automatically raising said plate and bolt.
8. A bag-frame lock comprising a casing provided in its top with an opening, a boltcarrying .plate upon the upper surface of said casi-ng and hinged thereto, a bolt eX- tending downwardly from said plate and through the opening in said casing, a manually operated means connected with said casing but independent of said plate and bolt for normally maintaining a closed and locked relation .of said plate and bolt with relation .to said casing, but being adapted when operated to bring said plate and bolt into released relation, and means coperating with said plate and bolt-retaining means for automatically raising said plate and bolt,
and means connected with said bolt for limiting the outward movements of said plate and bolt.
t. A bag-frame lock comprising a casing provided in its .top with an opening, a spring-controlled bolt-carrying plate upon the upper surface of said casing and hinged thereto, a bolt extending Adownwardly from said plate and through the opening in said casing, a manually operated spring-controlled means connected with said casing but independent of said plate and bolt for normally maintaining a closed and locked relation of said plate and bolt with relation to said casing, but being adapted when operated to bring said plate and bolt into released relation, and means cooperating with said plate and bolt-retaing means for automatically raising said plate and bolt, and means connected with said bolt for limiting the outward movements of said plate and bolt.
5. A bag-frame lock comprising a casing provided in its top with an opening', a boltcarrying slate upon the upper surface of said casing and hinged thereto, a bolt eX- tending downwardli7 from said plate and through the opening in said casing, said casing being provided in one of its sides with a iinger-piece receiving opening, a slide within' said casing provided with a fingerpiece slidably arranged in and extending from said tingerpiece receiving' opening, said slide being also provided with an opening through which said bolt extends, and means connected with said bolt with which said slide is normally in retaining engagement tor maintaining a closed and locked relation of .said plate and bolt with relation to said casing.

Si bag-frame lock comprising a casing provided in its top with an opening, a boltdirrving plate upon the upper surface of said casing and hinged thereto, a bolt extending downwardly from said plateV and through the opening in said casing, said casing being provided in one ot its sides with a Vinnerer-piece receiving opening, a slide within said casing provided with a iingcrpiece slidably arranged in and extending from said tingerpiece receiving opening, said slide being also provided with an openthrough which said bolt extends, means connected with said bolt with which said slide is normally in retaining engagement for maintaining a closed and locked relation oi'l said plate and bolt with relation to said casing, and means connected with said holt for limiting the outward movements oi said plate and bolt.

A bag-trame lock comprising a casing provided in its top with an opening, a spring-controlled bolt-carrying plate upon the upper surface ot said casing and hinged thereto, a bolt extending downwardly from said plate and through the opening in said casing, said casing being provided in one of its sides with a ingerpiece receiving opening, a spring-controlled slide within said casing provided with a iingerpiece slidably arranged. in and extending from said fingerpiece receiving opening, said slide being also provided with an opening through which said bolt extends, means connected with said bolt with which said slide is normally in retaining engagement for maintaining a closed and locked relation ot said plate and bolt with relation to said casing, and means connected with said bolt tor limiting the outward movementsl ot' said plate and bolt.
