LGCKNG MECHMIIISM FUR BAG- FRAMES.
Application filed November rlhis invention relates, generally, to im.- provements in bag-trames; and, the present invention has :re-terence, more particularly, to fastening;` and locking mechanism Ot the 'type employed tor effecting; the retention ot' the hinged bag trame-sections in their closed relation by simultaneously producing the loclred engagement of the respectivev bag traine fixtures, such as the lock andthe several latch elements or end fasteners.
The present invention, therefore, has tor its principal object to provide a simpler, as well as au edectively operating and a conveniently manipulated mechanism of a character for simultaneously etfeetingn the operation ot the frame-lock and the latch elements or end-fasteners tor maintainingr the :trainescctions in their closed relation, and to be readily manipulated for expeditiously open inp; the hinged members ot the bag-trame.
The invention has for a further object to provide a fastening mechanism for bagiframes, combining with the usual hinged trame-sections, a novel and positively acting basin-engaging means, actuated by an ar-A rangement` of connecting' slides or bars, which are actuated simultaneously with the operation ot the bag-lock mechanism, to disengage the hasp-engaging means from their normal holding or locked eng-agement with an arrangement of auxiliary hasps or .latchmembers.
Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be more fully understood from the tollowingr detailed description of they present invention.
`With the various objects ot the present in vention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel bag-trame fastening' and locking means hereinafter more :tully set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parte, as wellas in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which, will be described in detail in the following; speci-y ;dcation, and then linally embodied in the clauses ot the claims, which are appended to and which form an essential part of the specification.
rEhe invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation, showingr the in- 10, y1925. Serial N0. 68,099.
ner portions ot one of the ramessections of a bag-frame, and illustrating further, in`
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical sectional.
representation on an enlarged scale, of fragmentary portions of the frame-sections in their closed relation, with. certain parts of the mechanism connected with one ot the tramefsections in. retaining engagement with a hasp or latch-member of the other frame section; and Figure 4 is a longitudinal vertical sectional. representation, taken on line 4-4 in said Figure 3, looking in theY direcl tion of the arrow Figure. 5 is a view', showing in perspectivel and collectively, several of the members of the retaining or locking means represented in said Figures 3 and 4.
Figures 6 and 7 are views similar to F ig ures 1 and 2, respectively, illustratingV the frame-sections provided with a modified construction of fastening or locking mechanism.
Figure 8 is a. longitudinal vertical section-y al representation, said view being made on an enlarged scale; Figure 9 is a bottom view of the mechanism represented in Figure 8, but shown detached from the frame-section; and Figure lOs a horizontal sectional representation, taken on line 10-10 in said Fig ure 8 looking in the direction of the arrows in said ligures.
Similar characters ot reference are employed in the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several gures of the drawings, the reference-characters l and 2 indicate fragmentary porti-ons. ot. the hinged trame-sections of any of. the usual bagtrames., the frame-section l having suitably secured thereon, by means of lugs 4, or other suitable securing means, a bag-lock 3 of any suitable construction. In theV present case, the bag-loclr comprises a suitably shaped shell or casing as 5, adapted- 'to contain, any usual locking mechanism, which may be actuated by means of a lrey,4 the said shell or casing being shown secured in this case upon the upper surface of the trame-section 1, by means ot the usual yend-lugs 4, as indicated in Figures 1, 2, 6 and 7 ot the drawings. Upon its upper face, the said shell or casing 5 has associated therewith a pair of openended box-shaped elem-ents, as 6, between which is disposed a suitably constructed keyreceiving element 7, for locking and unlocking the locking mechanism contained within the shell or casing 5, as may be desired. Movably disposed within each bor-shaped element 6 is a slide S, each slide having a portion extending from the open end of its respective box-shaped element, the Aproiecting portions of said slides 8 being prefer ably provided with manipulating means, usually in the form of iingerpieces, as 9. Eirtending downwardly from said slides 8, through properly located slits or openings in the top of the shell or casing 5 and in the upper face of the frame-section 1 are hasp engaging elements or posts, as 10, with the chamtered yedges et which hasp-lugs 11, with which the frame-section 2 is provid-ed, are adapted to be brought into holding engagem-ent when the rame-sections 1 and 2 are brought into the closed relation. The lockmechanism is provided with suitably disposed springs 12, see Figure 2 of the drawings, which constantly actupon and against the edges ot the respective hasp-engaging elements or posts 10, to maintain the said elements or posts in their normal positions, shown in Figure 1 or' the drawings.
Suitably secured upon the upper tace-portion of the trame-section 1, near its respective end-portions, by means of clamping lugs 13, or other fastening means, are suitably shaped shells or casings 14, each shell or casing resting directly upon a base-plate 15. The upper surface ot each shell or casing 14 has suitably mounted thereon and secured in a fixed position by means of a rivet 1G, or otherwise, a member 17 in imitation ot the usual hinged or pivoted element of the usual bag-frame fastener. It will be understood, however, that these members 17, which in this case are used merely for ernamental purposes, may be entirely omitted, it desired.
Referring now more particularly to Figure 2 ot the drawings, it will be seen that the frame-section 1, beneath each base-plate 15, has an open portion 18, and that each baseplate 15, directly above each open portion 1S, is formed with a correspondingly located opening 19. Suitablysecured against the lower face of' each base-plate 15, by means of rivets 20, or other suitable fastening means, is a plate 21, each plate being provided with a downwardly extending chambered member or box which is closed, as at 23, said closed portion, however, being provided with an opening 24, in alinement with the openg sseaaae ing 19 in the base-plate 15. Movably disposed within each member or box 22 is a hasp-engaging lock-post 25, each post having an upper enlarged engaging end-portion 26, which is usually chamtered, as at 27, and which projects trom the opening 19 of the base-plate 15, as shown. The lower end-portion of each lock-post 25 extends from the opening 24 of the chambered member or box 22, the projecting end-portion of each post being slotted, as at 28. Within each member or box 22, each post 25 is encircled by a coiled spring 29, the purpose of which is seltevident. Suitably secured to each plate 21 is a bracket 30, with which is pivotally connected, by means of a pivot 31, a crank 32, each crank having a laterally extending iinger or arm 33, which in turn is pivotally connected by means of a pin 34, with the slotted or biturcated endportion 2G of' the respect-ive loek-post 25, substantially as show;z more particularly in Figure 4 of the drawings. Links 35 are employed for operatively connecting the respective hasp-lug engaging elements or posts 10 of the bag-lock with the crank-members 30 of the respective endfasteners, by means of pivot- pins 36 and 37 at the respective ends of said links 35, as will be clearly evident from an inspection et Figures 1, 2 and 4 of the drawings. `he rame-section 2 is provided in proper location with hasp-lugs or catches, as 38, and ot any suitable construction, which are adapted to engage the cham'fered end-portions oA the respective lock-posts 25, when the frame section 2 is closed wit-hin the frame-section 1.
The operation otl the mechanism for separating the various devices from their locked or retaining engagement, when it is desired to bring the traine-sections l and 2 into their open relation is simple, and is accomplished by pressure upon the ingerpieces 9 of the slides 8 of the main bag-lock 3 in the directions ot the arrows 0s and y, indicated in Figure 1 of the drawings. The result is that the posts 10 of the lock are correspondingly moved in the directions of the said arrows, so as to be withdrawn from the engagement with the hasps or catches 11. At the same time, the links 35 actuate the crank-members 3G, which by means of their ingers or arms 31, actuate the respective lock-posts 25, which are consequently drawn in downward directions, against the tensions of the springs 29, so as to also withdraw the c-lianiilj'ered end-portions 26 of the posts 25 from their locked or holding engagement with the hasps or catches 38, and whereby the frame-sections 1 and 2 are adapted to be brought into their separated or opened relation, indicated in Figure 2 of the drawings. he various springs 12 and 29 naturally return all the parts to their norma-l initial positions, when the pressure is removed from the finger-pieces 9. rllhe arrangementv andA construction of the various parts .ol'V the lock 3 and or" the fasteners at the ends of the irame is such, that when the trame-section 2 is closed Wit-hin the framasection l, the respective hasps or catches 'll and 58 will again readily enter into locked or holding engagelnent with the respective posts l0 ot' the main loch 3, and with the posts 25 ot the respective bag-frame fasteners located at the ends ot the trameeection l..
IOt course it will be understood, that the construction of the mechanism ot the main bag-lool; E3 is such, so that when a hey is insorted in the lrejv-receiving` element 7, the mechanism within the shell or casing 5 can be looked against movement, whereby the slides 3 and posts l0, as Well as the parts actuated from said posts, are also locked aga-inst movement.
in Vlieu of the particular construction of onddasteners herein-above described, and illustrated more particularly in Figures 3 and 4 oit the drawings, l may enipl-oywith the form of main bag-'loclr and its posts l0 and lnlrs 35, end-fasteners 39 ot the construction illustrated in connection with Fign uros 7, 8, 9 and l0 ot the drawings. ln this instance, each end-fastener comprises a shell or casing,` l0 secured upon the upper tace of the franse-section l by means of clamping lugs 41, or other suitable :fastening means,
the u `3er surface or" each shell or casino' having suitably mounted thereon a member la in vimitation of the usual hinged or pivoted element of the usual bag-'frame tastener. The upper surface of the said shell or casing;` l@ is formed With a longitudinally extending` elongated opening 43, said opening,` beingv made of a greater Width, as at Contiguous to said enlarged open portion flfl are a pair of lingers or lugs 45. Suitably mornted against the inner tace of the upper portion ot said shell or casing; 40 is a plate 4 6 provid-ed `with an elongated opening fl?, longitudinally in alinement with the open portions i3 and i4 in the top of the shell or casing 40.
The frame-section l in this oase isl also made at its end-portions With elongated openings 48 in alinement with the openings 47, 43 and 4doi the respective endetasteners 39,- and slidably arranged in said openings of the respective fasteners are vertically disposed plates l-Q. Each plate 49 is formed with a: downwardly projecting portion 50 and a laterally extending finger 5l, each portion 50 having` a chamtered edge 52 for retaining or holding engagement with a hoolnshaped catch, as 53, with which the traine-section Q, is provided. Connected with each linger 5l of each plate 49, by means ot a rivet or pin all is a link 55, the' said .links being,` suit-ahh7 connected at their opposite end-portio`ns, by means of rivets or pins 56, with the respective posts l() of the bag-rame loch 3. 'fhat each plate i9 is properly maintained in its oper tive position, Without interfering with its sliding nioveinent, each plate is prroif'ided with a laterally extending pin 57 whi-cn bears against the lower face of .the plate e6, and has its upper marginal edge bearing` directly upon the lower face of the n'iember L12. The normal' initial relation of the several parts i-s maintained by an arrangement or coiledv springs 6:0 bearing .against the marginal edges of the respective plates e9, each spring having its ends attached to the previ- Ously mentioned fastening lugs de, as will be clearii7 understood from an inspection of' Figures S and l0 ol the drawings. The construction and arrangement of the parts et the inain bag-loch 3 is the same as that, heretofore described in connection with Fig; ures l to 5 of the drawings, and any :turther description of the saine is therefore deemed unnecessary.
-O' course, I am aware that .otherI changes may be made in. the general' arrangements and .combinations of the various devices and parts., as Well as in the details of the oonstruction ot the said parts, Without departingv from. the scope ot the present invention as set forth in the foregoing speelde-ation, and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the enact arrangements and combinations ont the several devices and parts as described in the foregoing specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying; drawings.
