Be it known that l, JULIUs HAMMESFAHR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, inthe county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful luiprovements in Locking Mechanism for Bag-Frames; and l. do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the'same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
rl`his invention has reference, generally, to improvements in bag-frames; and the present invention relates, more particularly, to a novel locking attachment for bag-frames, combining with the hinged frame-sections a lock-actuated and hasp-engaging mechanism, arranged and constructed with a view of dispensing with the additional hasp-engagingbag-frame fasteners mounted upon the outside of one of the frame sections and operated independently of the main hasp-engaging lock.

@ther objects of the invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.
Vith the various objects of the present invention in view,- the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel locking-attachment for bagnframe's hereinafter more fully set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top view of a bag-frame, provided with a locking attachment therefor, made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention, the two bagframe-sections being represented in a partly opened and unlocked relation, so as to show in connection therewith the arrangement or disposition of the several liasp-lugs; and Fig. 2 is a front face view of the frame-sections and the locking attachment in their closed relation, the usual hinged end-members or portions of the frame-sections being represented as being broken away.
Fig. 3 is alongitudinal vertical section of the outer or main frameesection and the locking attachment connected therewith, the manipulating lock which is employed in connection with said frame-section for actuating the said locking attachment being represented in elevation.
F 4 is a detailed longitudinal vertical section, on an enlarged scale, of a fragmentary portion of the outer or main framesection, the manipulatingl lock-mechanism mounted upon said frame-section, and a pair of oppositely movable hasp-lug engaging slides, adapted to be actuated by said lockmechanism.
Fig. 5 is a top or plan view of a fragmentary portion of the outer or main frame-section, with the lock-mechanism omitted from said View, said view showing in connection therewith, also in top or plan view, portions of the respective slides and easings or shells in which said slides are movably disposed.
Fig. 6 is a bottom view of the lock-casing,
with the bottom-plate thereof omitted fromV said view, said view illustrating the slideactuating mechanism or devices in their normal initial positions; and Fig. 7 is a similar view of the same devices and parts of the said lock-mechanism, illustrating the relative position of the various parts when actuating the said hasp-lug engaging slides. l
Fig. 8 is a plan view of the inner face of the bottom-plate of the lock, showing in connection therewith a key-operated tumbler' pivotally mounted upon said plate, for locking the lock-mechanism against movement.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all ofthe said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, it will be seen, that the locking attachment is shown in connection with the class of bag-frames known in the trade as English7 or sewed-in bag-frames, and while in the following specification I have also described the said attachment mounted upon and used with the frame-sections of y this type of bag-frames, it will be understood, however, that the locking attachment mav be attached tol and used .also with other styles and types of bag-frames.
In the present drawings, the referencecharacters 1 and 2 indicate the outer members of thei respective frame-sections, the frame-section 1 having secured thereto, by means of the usual brackets 3, or other suit-- able securing means, the usual form of lvertically disposed side-member or element 4.
In like manner, the frame-section 2 has secured thereto by means of the usual brackets 5, or other suitable securing means, the usual form of vertically disposedside-mem- Vber 6, the respective leg-members of said side-elements 4land 6 being operatively conneoted by means of any usual and wellknown hinges, which, however, are not here shown.
Suitab-ly secured to the said side-member or element 6, at desired points, and projecting laterally from the inner faces of said side-element 6, are a plurality of hasp-lugs, as 7, 8, 9, and 10, each hasp-lug being provided with a retaining or holding hook 11 with beveled nose 12, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and for the purposes to be presently more fully described.
The lock-mechanism for actuating a pair of oppositely moving hasp-lug engaging slides, to be hereinafter more particularly described, consists, essentially, of a main shell or casing comprising a top or upper face 13 comprising the longitudinally eX- tending side-walls 1-1 and the end-walls 15, said topv or upper face being also provided, if desired, with key-receiving hole or opening 16 for the purposes to be presently set forth.
Extending from the lower marginal edgeportions of said sides 14. are suitably disposed clamping or fastening lugs, as 17, the lower marginal edge port-ions of the endwalls v15 being also preferably provided with retaining lugs, as 18, although the said latter lugs may be dispensed with, if desired.
Suitably secured'over the open bottom of the said lock-casing or shell, by means of the said several lugs j ust mentioned is a bottomplate, as 19, see Fig. S of the drawings, said plate being provided with longitudinally extending openings or slots 20 for the reception of the said lugs 17 which are also passed through correspondingly disposed slots 21 in the frame-section 1, and then clamped against the face of the said framesection, to secure the locking and said inner plate 19 in their fixed positions. lWhen the end-lugs 18 are employed, the said plate 19 is formed with correspondingly placed slots,
as22, with which the said end-lugs 1S register in the manner illustrated more particularly in Fig. -t of the drawings. Of course it will `be fully understood, that any other means may loe readily employed forv securing the said bottom-plate 19 in its fixed position over the open portion of the said main lockcasing or shell, if desired.
As shown more particularly in said Fig. L1- of the drawings, the said bottom plate 19 is made in the form of a shell or casing, having the longitudinally extending side-walls 23 and the end-walls 24, the latter beingV formed with cut awa-y portions or openings 25 for the purposes hereinafter more fully set forth. Y
In longitudinal alinment with the said lock-casing or shell and its shell-like bottomplate 19, contiguous to the opposite end-walls 24, are a pair of slide-receiving shells or casings 26 and 27, said shells or casings being suitably secured upon the upper or outer face of the said frame-section 1 by means of the usual clamping lugsA 28 and rivets 29, as shown; although it will be fully understood, that any other means of fastening may be employed, if desired.
Slidably disposed within the respective shells or casings 26 and 27 are a pair of plates or slides 30, said slides having their end-portions 31 extending from the openended portions 32 of the respective shells or casings 26 and 27 and through the cut-away portions or openings 25into the shell or casing formed by the bottom-plate 19, in the manner illustrated in said Fig. 4 ofthe drawings.y Suitably connected with the respective plates or slides 30, and depending therefrom through properly placed el opngated openings or slots 33 in the frame-section 1, are a pair of hasp-lug engaging posts or elements 34 and 35, said posts or elements being movably disposed in said openings or slots 33 and being adapted to be engaged hy the retaining or holding hooks 11 of the respective hasp-lugs 9 and 10 when `the two frame- sections 1 and 2 are brought into their closed relation.
Oscillatorily ymount-ed upon the top or upper face 13 of the main lock-casing or shell isa finger piece, as 36, of elongated configuration, so as to conform to the general configuration of the top of said niain lock-casing or shell, substantially as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, said finger piece being provided with a downwardly extending pivot-post 37, which extends into and through a hole 38 in the said top 13, said hole providing a suitable bearing in which the lower end-portion of said post 37 is oscillatorily disposed. Suitably mounted upon the projecting end-portion ci' said post 37, within the chamber or hollow part of said main lock-casing or shell is a slide-actuating plate or cam, 39, said plate in the present case being provided with a pair of studs or projections, as 40 and 41, one of which as 41 is adapted to be moved against a stud or stop 4Q, extending from the inner face of the top 13 of the main lock-casing or shell, for the purpose of arresting, at the proper time, the return movement of the fingerpiece and causing it to assume its normal initial position indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Slidaloly disposed within said main lock-casing or shell and located upon opposite sides of said actuating plate or cam 39, as will be seen from an inspection of Figs. 4, 6 and 7 of the drawings, are a pair of lock-post carrying plates or slides 43 and 44, the slide 43 being formed with longitudinally extending guide-flanges or ribs 45 and 46, and the said slide 44 being likewise formed with longitudinally extending guide-flanges or ribs 47 and 48. A coiled spring 49 having its respective ends suitably attached to the respective plates 43 and 44 by means of pins 50, or otherwise, causes certain projections 51 and 52 extending 'from the respective flanges or ribs 45 and 47 to contact with the respective projections or studs 41 and 40 of the plate or cam 39, substantially as shown and for the purposes to be presently described. As an extra precaution, it desired, the slide 44 may be provided with an end-tongue 53 upon which is mounted the one end of an auxiliary compression spring 54, the other end of said spring being in engagement with the inner face of the one end-wall 15 ot the main lockcasing or shell. Connected with and extending downwardly from the said slide 43 is a post 55, said post extending into and beingslidably disposed in an elongated opening or slot 56 in the top of the closing plate 19.
Said post also extends through a slot 57 in the one plate or slide 30, being snugly fitted in said slot 57, so that the movement of said post 55 will correspondingly move said plate or slide 30, the lower end-portion of the said post 55 extending into and through a correspondingly placed elongated opening or slot 58 in themain frame-'section 1 for engagement with the previously mentioned hasp-lug 7 of the frame-sectionQ, as will be evident. Similarly, there is connected with and extending downwardly from the slide 44 a post 59, said post extending into and being slidably disposed in an elongated opening or slot 60 in the top of the closing plate 19. Said post 59 also extends through a slot 61 in the other plateor slide 30, being snugly fitted in said slot 61, so that the movement of said post 59 will correspondingly move said plate or slide 30, the lower end-portion of said post 59 extending into and through a correspondingly placed elongated opening or slot 62 in the main frame-section 1 for engagement with the other hasp-lug'S of the frame-section 2, as will be clearly understood.
rllhe various devices and parts of the lockmechanism can be locked against movement, when desired, by a tumbler, as 63, pivotally mounted upon a pivot-post 64 connected with the bottom-plate 19, as shown, said tumbler having an elongated opening or slot, as 65, through which the post 55 projects, and having an oH-set 66 for engagement with said post 55 when a key is inserted through the key-hole 16, mounted upon the key-post 67, and then turned into the receiving portion 68 of the tumbler, so as to move the same in the direction of the arrow as will be clearly understood Jfrom aninspection of Fig. 8 of the drawings.
Thus, when the lock-mechanism within the main lock-casing or shell has not been locked by means of a key, and the-framesection 2 is closed within the frame-section 1, the hasp- lugs 7 and 8 will be snapped into holding` engagement with the respective hasp-engaging posts 55 and 59 of the slides 43 and 44, and the hasp-lugs 9 and 10 will be simultaneously snapped into holding engagement with the hasp-engaging posts -or elements 34 and 35 of the respective plates 105 or slides 30.
When it is desired to bring the two framesections 1 and 2 into their opened relation, the finger-piece 36 is turned on its pivot, so as to assume the position indicated in dotted 110 outline in Fig. 1 of the drawings, whereby the actuating plate or cam 39 will move the slides 43 and 44 in opposite direction, distending the coils of the spring 49 and compressing those of the spring 54, as will be 115 evident, the hasp-engaging posts 55 and 59 being withdrawn from their holding engagement with the hasp'- lugs 7 and 8. At the same time, the movements of said posts 55 and 59 in opposite directions will corre- 120 spondingly move the two plates or slides 30, so that the posts or elements 34 and 35 will also be withdrawn from their holding or retaining engagement with the respective hasp-lugs 9 and 10, permitting thereby the 125 bag-frame to be opened, as will be clearly evident. As soon as the pressure is released from the fingerpiece, the springs 49 and 54 will return the various parts, which were previously moved, to their normal initial po- 130 Lars-,64o
sitions so that the frame-sections can be closed, the various hasp-lug engaging posts Ibeing once more snapped into their holding or retaining engagement with the various hasp-lugs of the frame-section 2.
Of course, I ain aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations oi' the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are append thereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts as described in the foregoing speciiication, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustratedin the accompanying drawings.
I claim l. In combination with the trame-sections oit a bag-frame, hasp-lugs extending from one of said frame-sections, a lock mechanism connected with the other frame-section provided with means adapted to engage with some of said hasp-lugs, a lock-casing in which said mechanism is disposed, a lingerpiece pivotally mounted upon said lockcasing, means connected with said ngerpiecey for actuating said locking mechanism, slides actuated from said lock mechanism, and means connected with said slides adapted to engage with others of said hasp-lugs.
2. In combination with the frame-sections of a bag-traine, hasp-lugs extending from one oit' said frame-sections, a lock mechanism connected with the other frame-section provided with means adapted to enga-ge with some of said hasp-lugs, a lock-casing in which said mechanism is disposed, a fingerpiece pivotally mounted upon said lock-casing, meansconnected with said fingerpiece for actuating said locking mechanism, slides actuated from said lock mechanism, and hasp-engaging posts extending downwardly from said slides adapted to engage others of said hasp-lugs.
3. In Combination with the frame-sections of a bag-frame, hasp-lugs extending from one of said frame-sections, a lock-casing mounted upon the other frame-section, oppositely moving slides within said lock-casing, hasp-lug engaging posts depending from said slides adapted to engage with some of said liasp-lugs, a iingerpiece pivotally mounted upon said lock-casing, means connected with said iingerpiece for actuating said slides, a second set of oppositely moving slides actuated from the posts connected with said irst-mentioned slides, and means connected with said second-mentioned slides adapted to engage with others of said hasplugs.
4. In combination with the frame-sections y of a bag-frame, hasp-lugs extending from one of said frame sections, a lock-casing mounted upon the other frame-section oppositely moving slides within said lock-casing, hasp-lug engaging posts depending from said slides adapted to engage with some of said hasp-lugs, a tingerpiece pivotally mounted upon said lock-casing, means connected with said tingerpiece for actuating said slides, a second set ot' oppositely moving slides actuated from the post-sconnected with said first-mentioned slides, and haspengaging posts extending downwardly from said second-mentioned slides adapted to engage with others of said hasp-lugs.
5. In combination with the `trame-sections ot a bag-frame, hasp-lugs extending from one of said frame-sections, a lock-casing mounted upon the other frame-section, oppositely inovi-ng slides within said lock-casing, hasp-lug engaging posts depending from said slides adapted to engage with some of said hasp-lugs, a tinge-rpiece pivotally mounted upon said lock-casing, a camplate connected with said ingerpiece for actuating said slides, asecond set or' oppositely moving slides actuated from the posts connected with said irst-mentioned slides, and means connected with said secon ll-mentioned slides adapted to engage with others of said liasp-lugs.
6. In combination with the frame-sections of a bag-frame, hasp-lugs extending from one oi' said trame-sections, a lock-casing mounted upon the other trame-section, oppositely moving slides within said lock-casing, hasp-lug engaging posts depending from said slides adapted to engage with some of said hasp-lugs, a fingerpiece pivotally mounted upon said lock-casing, a camplate connected with said Iingerpiece for actuating said slides, a second set of oppositely moving slides actuated from the posts connected with said first-mentioned slides,
Vand hasp-engaging posts extending downwardly from said second-mentioned slides adapted to engage with others ot said hasplugs.
7. In combination with the frame-sections of a bag-frame, hasp-lugs extending from one of said frame-sections, a lock-casing mounted upon the other frame-section, oppositely moving slides within said lockcasing, hasp-lug engaging posts depending from said slides adapted to engage with some of said hasp-lugs, a spring connecting said slides, and a second spring-mounted between the end of one of said slides and an end-wall of said lock-casing, a finger-piece pivotally mounted upon said lock-casing, means connected with said tingerpiece 'for actuating said slides, a second set of oppositely moving slides actuated from the posts connected with said irst-mentionedcvslides,
and means connected with said second-mentioned slides adapted to engage with others of said hasp-lugs.
8. In combination with the frame-sections ofa bag-frame, hasp-lugs extending from one of said frame-sections, a lock-casing mounted upon the other frame-section, oppositelt'y7 moving slides vWithin said lock-casing, hasp-lug engaging posts depending `from said slides adapted to engage With some of said hasp-lugs, a spring connecting said slides, and a second spring mounted between the end of one of said slides and an end-Wall of said lock-casing, a finger-piece pivotally mounted upon said lock-casing, means connected with said linger-piece for actuating said slides, a second set of oppositeli7 moving slides actuated from the posts connected with said first-mentioned slides, and hasp-engaging posts extending downwardly 'from said second-mentioned slides adapted to engage with others of said hasplugs.

In combination with the frame-sections of a bag-frame, hasp-lugs extending from one of said iframe-sections, a lock-casing mounted upon the other frame-section, oppositely moving slides Within said lock-casing, hasp-lug engaging posts depending from said slides adapted to engage with some of said hasp-lugs7 a spring connecting said slides, and a second spring mounted between the end of one of said slides and an end-wall of said lock-casing, a ingerpiece pivotally mounted upon said lock-casing, a cam-plate connected with said Iingcrpiece for actuating said slides, a second set of oppositely moving slides actuated from the posts connected with said first-mentioned slides, and means connected with said second-mention ed slides adapted to engage with others of said hasp-lugs.

In combination with the frame-sections ot a bag-trame, hasta-lugs extending from one of said frame-sections, a lock-casing mounted upon the other frame-section, oppositely moving slides Within said lockcasing, hasp-lugs engaging posts depending` from said slides adapted to engage with some of said hasp-lugs, a spring connecting said slides, and a second spring mounted between the end of one of said slides and an end-Wall of said lock-casing, a linger-piece pivotally mounted upon said lock-casing, a cam-plate connected with said ingerpiece for actuating said slides, a second set of oppositely moving slides actuated from the posts connected with said lirst-mentioned slides, and hasp-engaging posts extending downwardly from said second-mentioned slides adapted to engage with others of said hasp-lugs.
11. In combination with the frame-sections oi a bag-frame, hasp-lugs extending from one of said frame-sections, a chambered bottonrplate mounted upon the other frame-section, said bottom-plate being provided with elongated openings in its top and having open end-portions, a lock-casing mounted upon said bottom-plate, oppositely moving slides Within said lock-casing, hasplug engaging posts depending from said slides into and through the elongated openings in said bottom-plate and adapted to engage with some ci said hasp-lugs, a spring connecting said slides, and a second spring mounted between the end of one of said slides and an end-Wall of said lock-casing, a lingerpiece pivotally mounted upon said lockcasing, means connected with said linger` piece for actuating said slides, a second set of slides mounted upon the last-mentioned frame-section, said slides having end-portions extending nto and through the open endportions of the chambered bottom-plate, the end-portions of the said second-mentioned slides being provided with elongated openings into and through Which the hasplug engaging posts of the irst-mentioned slides extend for actuating said second-mentioned slides, and means connected with said second-mentioned slides adapted to engage with others of'said hasp-lugs.
12. In combination with the frame-sed tions of a bag-frame, hasp-lugs extending from one of said frame-sections7 a chambered bottom-plate mounted upon the other frame-section, said bottom-plate being provided With elongated openings in its top and having open end-portions, a lock-casing mounted upon said bottom-plate, oppositely moving' slides Within said lock-casing, hasplug engaging posts depending from said slides into and through the elongated openings in said bottom-plate and adapted to engage with .some of said hasp-lugs, a spring connecting said slides, and a second spring mounted between the end olf one of said slides and an end-wall of said lock-casing, a lingerpiece pivotally mounted upon said lock-casing, means connected With said linger-piece for actuating said slides, a second set of slides mounted upon the last-mentioned frame-section, said slides having endportions extending into and through the open end-portions of the chambered bottomplate, the end-portions of the said secondmentioned slides being provided with elongated openings into and through which the hasp-lug engaging posts of the first-mentioned slides extend for actuating said second-mentioned slides, and hasp-engaging posts extending downwardly from said second mentioned slides adapted to engage with others of said hasp-lugs.
13. In combination with the frame-sections of a bag-frame, hasp-lugs extending Jfrom one of said frame-sections, a `chambered bottom-plate mounted upon the other frame-section, said bottom-plate being provided with elongated openings in its top and having open end-portions, a lock-casing mounted upon said bottom-plate oppositely moving slides within said lock-casing, hasplug engaging posts depending from said slides into and through the elongated openings in said bottom-plate and adapted to engage with some of said hasp-lugs, a spring connecting said slides', and a second spring mounted between the end oi one of said slides and an end-wall of said lock-casing, a ingerpiece pivotally mounted upon said lock-casing, a canrplate connected with said ingerpiece for actuating said slides, a second set of slides mounted upon the last-mentioned frame-section, said .slides having endportions extending into and through the o-pen end-portions of the chambered bottom- Y plate, the end-portions of said second-mentioned slides being provided with openings into and through which the hasp-rlug engaging posts of the irst-mentioned slides extend for actuating said second-mentioned slides, and means connected with said second-mentioned slides adapted to engage with others of said hasp-lugs.
14. In combination with the frame-sections of a bag-frame, hasp-lugs extending from one of said frame-sections, a chambei-ed bottom-plate mounted upon the other frame-section, said bottom-plate being provided with elongated openings in its top and having open end-portions, a lock-casing mounted upon said bottom-plate, oppositely moving slides within said lock-casing, hasplug engaging posts depending from said slides into and through the elongated openings in said bottom-plate and adapted to engage with some of said hasp-lugs, a spring connecting said slides, and a second spring mounted between the end of one of said slides and an end-wall of said lock-casing, a ingerpiece pivotally mounted upon said lock-casing, a cam-plate connected with said finger-piece for actuating said slides, a second set of slides mounted upon the lastmentioned frame-section, said slides having end-portions extending into and through the open end-portions of the chambered bottomplate, the end-portions of said second-mentioned slides being provided with openings into and through which the hasp-lugengaging lposts of the first-mentioned slides extend for actuating said second-mentioned slides, and hasp-engaging posts extending downwardly from said second-memtioned slides adapted to engage with others of said hasp-lugs.
