To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1,-F11ANK .T. STUART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maplcwood, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag- Frame Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifica tion. i
@LThis invention relates, generally, toimprovements in bag-frame fasteners, and,the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel construction of safetycatch for the hinged frame-sections of a bagframe, with a view of providing a simply constructed and positively acting construction, the parts of the fastener having been reduced toa minimum, and the parts of the fastener being arranged so that they will act automatically to maintain a locked relation ofthe parts of the fastener, when the hinged bag-frame sections are closed, but being readily manipulated, to bring the parts of the fastener into their unlocked relation, so that the frame-sections may be brought into their separated or opened relation. i I
The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide a bag-frame fastener of the general character and construction hereinafter more fully set forth, and having for its main purpose an automatic clocking action of itsmechanism for maintaining the bag-framesections in their closed relation. I
Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.
With the various objects 'of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel bag-frame fastener hereinafter more fully set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims, which are appended to and which form an essential partof the said specification.
The invention is illustrated in the panying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top edge-view of the two frame-sections of a bag-frame, said framesections being shown in their disconnected relation, one of said frame-sections illustrating in connection therewith an arrangement of a pair of. fasteners embodying thep'rinciples'of the present invention, and the other frame-section being shown with a pair of hasp-members adapted to be moved into locking engagement with the mechanism of said fasteners, the push-membersor bolts of the fasteners beingrepresented in their manually actuated positions for releasing the hasp-niembers from their locKed engagement with the. mechanism of the fasteners. Figure 2 is a top-edge view of a portion of the frame-section provided with the frame-fasteners, showing in 1 connection therewith a fastener having its push-man her or boltinthe position, when the parts of the inner mechanism of the fastener are in locked relation with, one another.

Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reterence characters 1 and 2 indicate the frame-sections of a bag-frame, which are of any of the usual constructions,
and whicharc adapted. to be pivotally connected in. the usual and well-known man nor. To one of said frame-sections, as 2, is suitably secured by means of rivets 3, or otherwise, a hasp-plate 4t havingan. up-
1 wardly extending member 5 from which extends, at. a right angle, a hasp-member 6 provided with a laterallyextending receiving notch or slot 7, and a spring engaging end portion 8, substantially as shown in the 0 several figures of the drawings, the same being adapted, to be moved over and above the frame-section 1 and enter the shell or casing ofthe bag-frame fastener for engagement with the. hasp-engaging mecha 25 nism within said shell or casing, in the manner to be presently more fully described.
The. form of bag frame. fastener shown more particularly in Figures 1 to 10 inclusive, consists, essentially, of a main shell 32 or casing comprising a top 9, a pair of said end- walls 12 and 13 being respectively provided with fastening lugs 15, which extend into and are passed through correspondingly shaped slits or openings 1'1 of abase-plate 16 disposed against the marginal edges of the side-walls 10 and '11, and theend- walls 12 and 13,01 thesaid shell or casing, as indicated in Figures 5 and 8 of the drawings. That the, said shell or casing, with its base-plate 16, may be secured upon the outer face of the frame-section. 1, the said fastening lugs 15,, are also passed through correspondingly located slits .18 in the framesection 1 and then bent over upon the under face of said'frmne-section, in. a manner as indicated in said Figures 5 and 8. of .the drawings}.
, The reference-character 19, indicates a suitably shaped bolt, in the. formof a push or slide-plate, which is longitudinally dis.- posed within the chamber of the said shell or.casi.ng, the said plate having its respective end-portions 20 and 2-1 extending into and through suitably disposed guiding openings or slits 22 and 23' in the respective endswalls 12 and 13 of the said shellor casing, and the projecting parts of the said end- portions 20 and 21 being respec tively provided with angular members 24 and 25, one of which, as, 24, serves as a push or iingerpiece, and the other member 25 serving as a stop, as will be evident more particularly from an inspection of Figure 7 of the drawings. In addition, the push or slide-plate 19'is provided with a pair of suitably disposed studs or posts 26 and 27, and also with a projecting portion 28, which is provided with a hasp-engaging flange 29, one end of which, nearest the end-wall 13 of the shell or casing, is provided with a bent portion, as 30.
Disposed between the inner face of the said end-wall 13 and the said bent portion 30 are the arms or members of a U-shaped spring 31. The reference-character 82 indicates another spring, comprising a pair of arms or members 33 and 345, connected by means of an angularly formed portion 35, and with the edge-portion 36 of which, underv normal conditions, when the framesections 1 and 2 have been brought into their closed relation, the spring-engaging end 8 of the hasp member 6 has been brought into engagement.
'leierring now to Figure 6 of the drawings, in which the parts of the inner ,mechanism are shown in their manually operated positions, when the slide-plate 19has been forced by the operator exerting pressure upon thepush or fingerpiece 24; in the direction of the arrow 2, and in which figure the hasp-inember 6 is shown in its with drawn relation from the said mechanism, the parts of the mechanism being held in the positions shown by the engagement of the portions ,36 and oi the spring 32, respectively, with the studs or posts 27 and 26, as soon as the hasp-member 6 enters the opening 14 in the side-wall 10, as the framesections are being closed,,the portion 8 on gages the ed e-portion 36 of the spring 52, thereby forcing the angular portion'35, clear of the stud or post 27. Immediately, the compressed members or arms of the spring 31 become active, thereby causing the slideplate 19 to be moved into the position indicated in Figure 7 of th drawings, with the hasp-engaging flange 29 of the said plate having entered the, notch or slot 7 of the hasp-member, so that all of the various parts, as well as the closed frame-sections. 1 and 2 will be maintained in their closed and locked relation.
The, stop-member 25 in coming in con tact with the outer face of the end-wall 13 of the shell or casing limits the closing movement of the slide-plate 19, as will be clearly evident. To again, bring the frame-sections 1 and 2 into their open relation,.and to separate the hasp-member 6 from its locked. engagement with the flange 29' of the slide-plate 19, all that the operator has to dois to apply pressu s upon the push or fingerpiece 2st, thereby changing the rclative positions of the parts of the mechanism, asv indicated in Figure 7 of the drawings, to the positionsishown Figure adapted to engage, as shown in Figure 11,
the shell 0r casing, in this instance, being provided with a third spring 38 secured to the inner face ofthe sidewall 10, as at 39, the free end-portion of this spring hear ing forcibly upon ,an edge-portion 40 of the'hasp-member 6, when the various parts arein their locked relation, as indicated in Figure 12 of the drawings, but said spring 38 permitting the hasp-plate-tohe operated when the slide-p'latelt)" is manually manipulated, as previously described, and for the release of the' said hasp-rnember with the engaging flange 29 of the said slide-plate,
as will be fully understood from an inspection of said Figures 11 and 12 of the drawings.

A bag-frame fastener comprising a chambered shell having a top, longitudinally extending side-walls, one of said'side-walls being provided with a hasp-receiving opening, and end-walls, said end-walls being provided with guiding openings, a reciprocatory slide-plate within said chambered shell, said slide-plate having its respective end-portions projecting into and from a. the
respective guiding openings in said endwalls, means connected with said slide-plate for engagement with a hasp, means within the shell co-operating with the said slideplate for maintaining the same in its manually, released position, and additional means within said shell for automatically returning the slide-plate to itsinitial posi tion upon' entrance of the hasp into said shell.

maintaining the Slideplate in its manually released position, and an additional spring within said shell for automatically returning the slide-plate to its initial position upon entrance of the h'asp into said shell.

A bag-frame fastener comprising a chambered shellhaving a top, longitudinally extending gside-.walls,.one of said side-walls being provided with a hasp-receiving open- .ing, and end-walls, said end-walls. being provided with guiding openings, a reciprocatory' slide -plate within said chambered shell, said slide-plate having its respective end-portions projecting into and from the respective guiding-openings in said endwalls, a-fingerpiece connected with one of the projecting end-portions of the slideplafte, and a stop-member connected with the other project ingend-portion of said slideplateineans connected with said slide-plate for: engagement with a hasp, lugs connected with and extending from said slide-plate, a spring -within saidshell having portions thereof in; engagement with said lugs, for maintaininghthe slide-plate in its. manually released position, and an additional. spring within said shell for. automatically returning the slide-plate to its initial position upon entrance ofthe hasp into said shell.

A bag-frame fastener comprising a chambered shell having a top, longitudinally extending side-walls, one of saidside-walls being provided with a hasprreceiving opening, and end-walls, saidend-walls being provided with guiding openings, a reciprocatoryslide-plate within saidf chambered shell, said slide-plate having its respective end-portions projecting intoand from the respectiveguiding. openings in said-endwalls, a {finger-piece connected with one of the I projecting end-portions of the slideplate, astoprmernberconnected withthe other projectingend-portion otthe slideplate, and a marginal haSpengaging flange connected with antler-tending downwardly from said slide-plate, means within said shell co-operating with said slide-plate for maintaining-thesame in its manually released position, and additional'means.within'said shell; for automatically returning the slide-plateto its initial position upon entrance of the hasp into said shell.

A bag-frame fastener comprising a chambered shell havinga top, longitudinally extending .sideswalls, one of said'side-walls being provided with a hasp-receiving opening, and end-walls,'saiclendwalls being provided with guiding openings, a recipro catory slide-plate within said chambered shell, said. slide-plate having its respective end-portions projecting into and from the respectiveguiding openings in said endwalls, afingerpiece connected with one of the. projecting.endrportions of the slideplate, a stop-member connected with the other projecting end-portion of the slideplate, and a marginal haspengaging flange connected. with and extending downwardly from said slide-plate, lugs connected with and extending from said slide-plate, a.
spring within said .shell. having portions thereof in engagementwith, said lugs, for maintaining theaslide-plate in its manually released position, and meanswithin said shell for automatically returning the slideplate toits initialpositionupon entrance of the .hasp into. said shell.

A bag-frame fastener comprising a chambered shell having a top, longitudinally extending. side-walls, one. ofsaid side-walls being provided. with ahaSD-I'eceiving open ing, and end-walls saicl end-walls being provided. with guidingv openings, a reciproca tory slide-plate.withinsaid chambered shell, said slide-plate. having. its respective endportionsproiecting into; and. from the respective guiding openings insaid end-walls, a-fingerpiececonnected with one of the pro jecting end-portionsv of the slide-plate, a stop-member. connected with the other pro jecting end-portion of the slide-plate, and. a marginal haspeengaging. flange connected with an dg extendingdownwardly from said. slide-plate, lugs connected with and extending from said slide-plate, a spring within said. shell. having portions thereofv in engagement'with saidjl'u'gs, for-maintaining the slideplate in its. manually released position, and .an. additional spring within said. shell for automaticallyreturning the. slide-plate to its initial. position upon entrance of the hasp intosaid.shel l.

In a bag-frame fastener, in combination with a hasp-member, a main shell, a slide-plate within said shell, means carried by said slide-plate with which the haspmember is adapted to be brought into locked engagement, a pair of studs connected with and extending from said slide-plate, aspring within said shell, said spring having an all gular portion extending normally between the said studs and co-operating with said slide-plate for maintaining the same in its manually released position, and another spring with said chamber for returning said slide-plate to its initial position and into locked engagement with the hasp-member when the hasp-member is brought into engagement with the angular portion of said first-mentioned spring.
