UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY EDMONDS, OF BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
Application filed August 11, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY EDMoNDs, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Hockley Brook, Birmingham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Bags, Purses, and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the spring catches or fasteners of hand-bags, purses and the like, the object being to provide an improved type of fastener which, while being simple in construction, is more eiiicient in use and insures greater security to the article fastened.
The improved fastener consists essentially of an external lever catch mounted upon the one part of the frame of the article and connected, at a point between its fulcrum and its outer end, to a concealed spring member located within the interior of the said frame, the said spring member being deflected or tensioned when the lever catch is raised.-
- Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings is a sectional elevation of a ladys hand-bag frame having the improved fastener. views shows the fastener closed.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through a portion of the frame showing the position the spring assumes when the lever catch is raised to unfasten the bag.
Fig. 3 is an underside plan of the frame and fastener.
Fig. 4 represents, on a larger scale, a transverse section through the frame and fastener, the latter being open.
Fig. 5 is a similar View, but shows the catch closed.
Fig. 6 is an underside plan of the lever catch member.
Fig. 7 shows the various parts separately.
The fastener comprises a lever member 1 having at one edge a tongue 2 bent to a U- shape or the equivalent in order to enter a slot 4 in the top of the channel-sectioned member 5 of the bag frame, the U-shaped tongue 2 being engaged by the cranked middle part 6 of a bowed or arched wire or like spring 7 located within the interior of the frame member 5, with its opposite ends taking a bearing upon the underside of the lat ter, and the cranked part passing through the ends of the slot 4: upon opposite sides of the tongue 2. The lever 1 is inclosed by a casing 3 whose edges are closed over the said lever and over the end of the tongue 2, as
Specification of Letters Patent.

shown. The lever rests upon the top of the frame member 5, the fulcrum being at 8, and projects laterally from the said frame member 5 in order to overlap the other frame member 9, which has a projection 10 adapted to engage a recess 11 in the lever, as shown in Fig. 4.
0n the outer end of the lever being raised, as in Fig. i the projection 10 is disengaged, and the spring 7 is deflected or straightened out, as shown in Fig. 2, but on the lever being released the spring returns to its normal condition (Fig. l) and lowers the lever. The projection 10 is beveled on the one side to render the fastener automatic in action.
Instead of the spring 7 being made from wire, it may be mat e from strip metal.
Having fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described comprising, in combination, two frame memhers, one frame member having an aperture therein, a spring adapted to bear on the under side of said frame member and having a bent portion adapted to project through said aperture for vertical spring movement therein, a catch lever having a channeled lug .dapted to engage the bent portion of said sprin and being adapted to fulcrum at one edge upon said frame member and means carried by said catch member and the second frame member for securing said frame members in latched position.
2. A device of the character described comprising, in combination, two frame members, one frame member having an aperture therein, a spring adapted to bear on the under side of said frame member and having a bent portion adapted to project through said aperture for vertical spring movement therein, a catch lever having a channeled lug extending therefrom, said lug being adapted to engage the bent portion of said spring, a slot formed in said catch lever, and a second frame member having formed thereon a beveled bead adapted to cooperate with the slot in said catch member for securing the frame members in latched position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
