BAG-FRAME FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO TUECKMANTEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Irvington, in thecounty of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Frame Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates, generally, to improvements in bag-frame fasteners; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel construction of bagframe fastener in which the various parts have been reduced to a minimum, so as to provide a simply constructed and cheap fastener, but which is positive and efficient in its action, and can be easily manipulated.
The present invention has for its principal object to provide a neat bag-frame fastener of the general construction hereinafter more particularly set forth, and one, in which the usual broad and hinged top or cover-plate is dispensed with, employing in lieu thereof a narrow bar pivotally connect ed at one end with thebox or shell of the fastener and having means at its other end for manipulation of said bar, said bar being also provided with a frame or hasp-engaging post, said bar and post being made in one piece, whereby in addition to the omission of the said wide top or cover-plate, the necessity of riveting the said post to the top or cover-plate, and also the necessary polishing or burnishing to produce a smooth and finished outer and upper face of the said top or coverplate is dispensed with.
The present invention has for its further object to provide a bag-frame fastener in which the frame-section or hasp-engaging post are made in one piece, that all danger of the post working loose, due to faulty construction, may be avoided;
, Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated willbe clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.
With the various objectsof the present invention in view, the said invention consists,

primarily, in the novel bag-frame fastener hereinafter set forth; and, the said invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims, which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l'is a. front elevation of a fragmentary portion of a bag-frame, provided wit-h a bag-frame fastener made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a top or plan view of the bagframe fastener; Figure 3 is a bottom view of the same; and Figure 4 is a longitudinal vertical section of the fastener, said views showing the narrow bar and its frame or hasp-engaging post in their closed relation to the main shell or box of the device.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4, showing the said narrow, bar and its frame or hasp-engaging post in their raised relation to theshell or box of the device.
Figure 6 is a top or plan view of a modiiied form of bag-frame fastener, but still embodying the principles of the present invention; Figure 7 is an end view of the same; and Figure 8 is a longitudinal vertical section of the said bag-frame fastener.
Similar characters of reference are employed in the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates the main member of the outer frame-section of a bag-frame, upon the upper face of which is adapted to be secured, in the desired positions a pair of bag-frame fasteners of the general character and construction shown more particularly in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive and to be presently more fully described; and the reference-character 2 indicates the other or inner frame-section of the bag-frame, said frame- sections 1 and 2 being connected in any usual hinge-like manner, but not here shown. Referring now more particularly to said Figures 1 to 5 inclusive, each bag-frame fastener consists, essentially, of a suitably formed shell or box, comprising a top 3, a pair of longitudinally extending side-walls 4t and a pair of laterally extending end-walls 5, said end-walls being formed with the usual fastening lugs or cars 6, for securing the said shell or box upon the outer face of the frame-section 1, substantially as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. Of course it will be evident that other means may be employed for securing the said shell or box in its position upon said frame-section 1.
If desired, a bottom or closing plate 7 may be employed in connection with the shell or box, said plate being arranged be tween the open bottom of the said shell or box and the upper or outer face of the frame-section the said plate 7 being provided with slits, as 8, through which the said lugs or ears 6 are passed, as will be evident from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings.
As shown, the top 3 of the said shell or box is made with a centrally disposed and longitudinally extending narrow slot or opening, as 9, terminating in an open portion of the same width, as at 10, in the upper portion of one of the said end-walls 5, and where the siid bottom or closing plate 7 is used, said latter plate is also provided with a corresponding centrally disposed and longitudinally extending narrow slot or opening 11. Extending laterally across the interior upper portion of the shell or box, nea the end-portion 12 of the said slot or opening 9 is a pin 13, said pin having its ends suitably atfixed to the longitudinally extending side-walls at of the said shell or box, as will be evident from an inspection of Figure 3 o the drawings.
Pivotally mounted upon said pin 13 is the end-portion 15 of a narrow bar 14, said bar being movable into and from said narrow slot or opening 5, as shown in the several figures of the drawings. From an inspection of Figure l of the drawings it will be seen that the pivotal arrangement of said bar 14 is such, that when it is moved down into the narrow slot or opening 9, the said bar will entirely close said slot or opening, and its edge 16 will be perfectly flush with the upper and outer face of the top 3 of the shell or box, and the lower edge of the said bar will rest upon and be supported by the edge-portion 17 in the end-wall 5 at the bottom of the opening 10 in said end-wall 5.
V The said bar 14 is usually of such length that it extends beyond the said opening 10, and its free end is made with a fingerpiece, as 18, which, however, may be of any other suitable shape from that herein shown in said Figures 1 to 5 inclusive, as will be clearly evident, said fingerpiece serving as a means for raising and lowering the said bar 14. At its pivoted end-portion, the said bar 14 is provided with a downwardly proother end by means of rivets 22, or other fastening means, to the lower face of the top-plate 3 of the shell or box, substantially as shown. Integrally connected with, and extending in a downward direction from the lower marginal edge of the said bar 14 is a curved or other suitably formed looking or retaining member or element 23, movably disposed in the elongated slot or opening 9 of the top-plate 3, and also in the correspondingly located slot or opening 11 of the closing or bottom plate 7, said member or element 23 being adapted to be moved into or out of holding or retaining engagement, in the usual manner, with the inner framesection 2 of the bag-frame. At its free endportion, the said locking or retaining memher or element 23 is formed with the usual stop lug 24, for limiting the outward movement of the said bar 14, as will be clearly understood from an inspection of Figure 5 of the drawings. The arrangement and construction of the previously mentioned cam-shaped projection or lug 19 in slidable engagement with the part 21 of the springmember 20 is such, that the bar 1 1 and its looking or retaining element 23, when raised, will be positively held in such raised position, and when lowered will close with a perceptive snap, as will be fully understood.
Referring now to the modified form of bag-frame fastener illustrated in Figures 6, 7 and 8 of the drawings, the topplate 3 of the shell or box instead of being provided with the narrow'elongated slot or opening 9 is formed with an outwardly extending raised portion 25, which is slotted, as at 26, for the pivotal arrangement therein of the cam-shaped end-portion of the narrow bar 14, the disposition of the pivot-pin being such that the lower marginal edge of the bar 1 1, when in its closed position, will rest. directly upon the upper and outer face of the top-plate 3 of the shell or box, as shown. In addition to these features, the said topplate 3 isalso provided with a comparatively short and narrow slot or opening 27, into and through which the said locking or retaining member or element 23 extends and is movably disposed therein, as will be clearly evident from an inspection of Figure 8 of the drawings. In all other respects, the arrangement and construction of the remaining devices and parts of this modified form of bag-frame fastener, in general, is substantially the same as that described in connection with the bag-frame fastener, illustrated in said Figures 1 to 5 inclusive, and any further description of the same is therefore deemed unnecessary.
From the foregoing description of the present invention, and from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings, it will be seen that I have devised a neat and simply constructed, as well as a cheaply manufactured, and perfectly operating bagframe fastener, the essential feature of which is that both the actuating bar and it; looking or retaining member or element 23 are made in one integral part from a single piece of metal, so that all danger of any possible separation of these parts, due to imperfect rivetting, and any marring of the top surface of the bag-frame fastener due to riveting, or to imperfectly polishing or buffing the said surface is entirely overcome.
It will be fully understood that bag-frame fasteners made according to the principles of the present invention may be secured to and employed with the hinged bag-frame sections of any of the usual bag-frames now in use.
Of course I am aware, that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the corn struction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended to the said specification. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 1. A bag-frame fastener comprising a chambered shell adapted to be secured to a frame-section of a bag-frame, said shell being provided in its top-plate with a narrow and longitudinally extending slot and in one of its end-walls with a narrow opening in communication with said slot in the topplate, a narrow bar pivotally connected with said shell, so as to be raised from and lowered into said narrow slot in the top-plate and the opening in said end wall, and the upper edge of said bar being flush with the upper and outer surface of the top-plate when said bar is in its lowered position within the narrow opening in said top-plate, and a retaining or holding means connected with and extending from said bar for separable retaining engagement with another framesection of the bag-frame 2. A bag-frame fastener comprising a chambered shell adapted to be secured to a frame-section of a bag-fra1ne, said shell be ing provided in its top-plate with a narrow and longitudinally extending slot and in one of its end-walls with a narrow opening in communication with said slot in the topplate, a narrow bar pivotally connected with said shell, so as to be raised from and lowered into said narrow slot in the topplate and the opening in said end wall, and the upper edge of said bar being flush with the upper and outer surface of the top plate when said bar is in its lowered posi' tion within the narrow opening in said topplate, and a retaining or holding member extending downwardly from the lower marginal edge-portion of said bar, said bar and retaining or holding member being integrally united by being made from a single piece of metal.

A bag-frame fastener comprising a chambered shell adapted to be secured to a frame-section of a bag-frame, said shell being provided in its top-plate with a narrow and longitudinally extending slot and in one of its end-walls with a narrow opening in communication with said slot in the topplate, a narrow bar pivotally connected with said shell, so as to be raised from and lowered into said narrow slot in the topplate and'the opening in said end wall, and a retaining or holding member extending downwardly from the lower marginal edgeportion of said bar, said bar and retaining or holding member being integrally united by being made from a single piece of metal, and the upper edge of said bar being flush with the upper and outer surface of the topplate when said bar is in its lowered position within the narrow opening in said topplate, said bar being further provided at its pivotal end-portion with a spring-engaging lug, and a spring-plate secured within said shell, with a portion of which said lug is in slidable engagement.
