To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrl-I S. Isrnon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Frame Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates, generally, to improvements in that class of bag-frame fasteners which are ordinarily employed with the hinged framesections of bags, suit-cases, and the like; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to the provision of a bag-frame fastener comprising a main shell or casing'adapted to be secured upon one of the framesections and provided with a hinged plate carrying a hasp-engaging bolt, with a locking means adapted to be operated by means of a key, for locking said. plate and its hasp-engaging bolt in an immovable position when engaging a hasp upon the other frame-section, or for the unlocked. engagement of said hasp-engaging bolt from the hasp, when the locking means is moved into its disengaged position from the hasp-engaging bolt, by, the action of the key.
The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to rovide a novel and simply constructed bag-frame fastener which can be readily operated for bringing the hinged bag-frame sections into their locked or unlocked relation, and the fastener-mechanism of which, by the action of a key-operated mechanism, may be immovably locked, so that the hinged frame-sections can not be opened, unless said key-operated mechanism 1 is first broughtinto its disengaged relation.

consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in the follow ng specification, and then finally embodled in the clauses of the claims which are appended to and. which form an essential part of the said specification.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a fragmentary portion of a bag and its hinged frame-sections, provided with a bag-frame fastener made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention, the various devices and parts being represented in their closed and locked relation; and Figure 2 is a similar view of fragmentary por- -tions of the two frame-sections, and of the bag-frame fastener, the various devices and parts being represented in their operated positions, with the frame-sections shown in their opened relation, said View being made on an enlarged scale. Similar characters of reference are employed in all, of the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts. Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference- characters 1 and 2 indicate the top-portions of the usual pivotally connected or hinged bag-frame sections, the frame-section 1 being provided with the edge, as will be clearly evident.

The bag-frame fastener which is to be mounted upon the outer face of the framesection 1 consists, essentially, of a suitably shaped shell, casing or box, comprising longitudinally extending sides 5, ends 6, and a top 7, the said shell, casing or box being secured in its position upon said frame-section 1 by means of rivets 8, although it must be understood that any other suitable fastening means may be employed for securing the bag-frame fastener to the said frame-section. As shown, the chambered shell, casing, or box thus provided 18 provided near one end of its top 7 with an opening 9, contiguous to which are suitably formed bearing-portions 10 for the reception and pivotal arrangement therein of the respective endportions of a pintle or pivot-pin 11, or the like, which carries the cam or other suitably shaped end-member 13 of a bolt-carrying plate 12, as will be evident froman inspection of the several figures of the drawings.
1 The said bolt-carrying plate, which is thus pivotally mounted upon the upper or outer face of the top 7 of the said shell, casing, or box, is provided at or near its free end-portion with a downwardly extending haspengaging bolt, as 14, said bolt being movably disposed in an opening 15 in the top 7 and being also movably disposed in the opening 3 of the frame-section 1 for engagement with the hasp-plate 1, or the like, in the usual manner, and as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. At a suitable point, the said bolt 14: is provided with a receiving groov or channel, as 16, the purpose of which will be presently more fully described. f desired, the said plate 12 may be provided upon its outer face with a fingerpiece 17 for the raising and lowering of said plate and its bolt 1 1, although such fingerpiece is not of itself a necessity since the said plate may be raised or lowered by taking hold of its Suitably secured against the inner face of the previously mentioned top 7 by means of a rivet 17, or otherwise, is a plate 18 having a downwardly projecting portion 19 and an extension 20, which terminates at its free end 1n a pair of upwardly extending tongues 21 adapted to be brought into retaining engagement with the under surface of the top '7 at its junction with the adjacent end-wall 6, as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings, the rivet 8 passing directly through the space formed between the said tongues 21. Suitably disposed in the said downwardly projecting portion 19 and that part of the extension adjacent thereto, is an opening or slot, as 22, therebyproviding a pair of marginal connection members 23 between said plate 18 and the extension 20, either or both of which are provided with an upwardly projecting and laterally extending rib or projection, as 24, the'purpose of which will be presently more fully set forth. The said extension 20 is also provided with a key-receiving post 2:") which projects in an upward direction into and through. a key-hole 2(5- in the top 7 of the shell, casing or box of the bag-frame fastener for the reception thereon of the socketed end-portion 28 of a key 27. Movably disposed upon said extension 29 is a bolt-engaging slide, as 29, provided with an elongated opening 30 and communicating open portion, as 31, for operatively fitting the said slide 29 over said key-post 25, and for the proper reception of the socketed end-portion 28 and the laterally extending actuating tongue 32 of the key, as will be clearly evident.
At one end, the said slide 29 is provided with a pair of marginal fingers. as 32, the
free end-portions of which extend down wardly, as at 33, and then upwardly, as at 34, to provide each finger with a portion, as 35, forming retaining members which are adapted to ride upon the previously mentioned connecting members 23, and over the ribs or projections 24 thereof, so as to rest on either side of said ribs or projections. and thereby maintain said bolt-engaging slide 29 in its engaged or disengaged relation with the hasp-engaging post 14. When the said slide 29 has been actuated by the turning of the key 27, so that the retaining members 35 have been moved over the said ribs or projections 2;, into the positions indicated in Figures 3 and 7 of the drawings, then the marginal edge-portion 36 located between the fingers 32 of the slide 29 will have entered the laterally extending receiving groove or channel 16 of the bolt 14L, so
that the bob-carrying plate 12 and its bolt erally extending tongue 32 of the key will cause the slide 29 to be moved in the opposite direction, the retaining members 35 beingmoved over the ribs or projections 24:, so as to be located upon the opposite sides of said ribs or projections, and the marginal edge-portion 36 being at the same time withdrawn from the groove or channel 16 in the bolt 1 1-, so that the plate 12 can be raised for the withdrawal of the bolt 14: from its holding engagement with the hasp-plate 4, or the like, of the frame-section 2, to permit of the framesections l and 2 to be brought into their opened relation indicated in Figure 2 of the drawings.
To positively maintain the-said plate 12 and its bolt 14; in either of its lowered or raised positions, the latter being indicated in dotted outline in Figure 3 of the drawings, a flat controlling spring 37 may be employed, said spring being fixed in place at one end by the previously mentioned rivet 17, and having its free actuating endportion 38 slidably and actively in contact with the cam or other suitably shaped endmember 13 of the bolt-carryingplate 12.
The manner of manually lifting and lowering the said plate 12, and consequently moving the bolt 14: out of and into the boltreceiving hasp, or other receiving means with which the frame-section 2 may be provided, and the mannercausing a locked or unlocked relation of the bolt-engaging slide 29 with said bolt 14:, will be clearly understood from the foregoing description and from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings, and any further description of the same is therefore deemed unnecessary.
Qt course I am fully aware, that changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts as described in the said specification,
nor do I confine myself to the exact de-' tails of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 1. A bag-frame fastener comprising a casing provided in its top with a bolt-receiving opening and also with a key-receiving opening, a bolt-carrying plate upon the said top and hinged thereto, a bolt extending downwardly from said plate and into and through the bolt-receiving opening in said top, a plate within said casing, said plate being provided with an extension, a key-receiving post extending upwardly from said extension, connecting members between said plate and said extension, providing an opening in alinement with said bolt-receiving opening and into and through which the said bolt also extends, laterally expending ribs upon said connecting members, a key-operated slide movably disposed upon the extension of said plate, said plate having a portion adapted to be brought into engagement with said bolt, for locking the bolt-carrying plate and its bolt against movement, and fingers extending from said slide, said fingers being provided with retaining members adapted to engage said laterally extending ribs.
2. A bag-frame fastener comprising a casing provided in its top with a bolt-receiving opening and also with a key-receiving opening, a bolt-carrying plate upon the said top and hinged thereto, said plate being provided at its hinged portion with a cam-shaped end-member, a bolt extending downwardly from said plate and into and through the bolt-receiving opening in said top, a plate within said casing, said plate being provided with an extension, a key-receiving post extending upwardly from said extension, connecting members between said plate and said extension, providing an opening in alinement with said bolt-receiving opening and into and through which the said bolt also extends, laterally extending ribs upon said connecting members, a key-operated slide movably disposed upon the extension of said plate, said plate having a portion adapted to be brought into engagement with said bolt, for locking the bolt-carrying plate and its bolt against movement, and fingers extending from said slide, said fingers being provided with retaining members adapted to engage said laterally extending ribs, and a spring extending from the plate within said casing, said spring having a portion thereof in engagement with the cam-shaped end-member of said bolt-carrying plate, for maintaining a lowered or raised relation of said boltcarrying plate and its bolt, when said slide is disengaged from said bolt.
