CATCH FOR BAGS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,861, dated December 18, 1888. Application filed February Z8, 1888. Serial No. 265,633. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERMAN KADOW, a citil zen of the United States, residing' at the'city of Newark, Essex county, New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Satchel or .Ba-g Catches; and I do hereby declare the followingl to be a tull, clear, and exact description ol' the invention, reference being had to the'accompanying draw ings, which form part of this specilication.

My invention relates to satchel-catclles, and has for its object the provision of a catch of novel construction, neat, and compact, and which will lock or catch automatically when the Satchel is closed and will hold the same firmly in its closed position.

My invention consists in the novel construction, combinations, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and speci tically claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure is a perspective view ot' the frame of a bag or satchel with my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view ot' the catch apart from the bag. Fig. i is a perspective view oi the casing with the movable parts removed, and Fig. 4 is a plan view ot' a portion ot' the catch.

The catch-casing consists oi a rectangular box of metal, C, having a cavity on top for the reception ot" a pivotal lever, D, and provided with depending ears c c, which pass through holes in the bag-trame A and are bent around inside the same. 'lhe casing C hason each side oi' the cavity in which the lever l) lies a notclnj, which serves to receive pintles 'i 'z' on cach side ot' said lover. Upon the bottom ot' lever l), and in line with pin ties i' i, is a lug, z, which bears against a spring, E, fastened within casing C. The lug 7l is curved on one 4side and straight on the other, the intersection of the curved and straight sides forming a corner, so that when the lever is raised until the corner of the lug is in contact with the spring the. lever will remain in such position until forcibly depressed. The lever l) is also formed with two depending lugs, l e, the edges of which are oppositely beveled, as shown, and the said lugs project through coinciding holes in the spring E and frame-piece A. The lug l is somewhat longer than the lug e, and is beveled in such direction that the contact of the hasp, with l which it engages when the bag is closed, will elevate the lever suiciently to allow the hasp i to pass under the end of the lug.

The catch constructed as above described operates in the following manner: 'hen the satchel is closed, the catch-lever D occupies the position in which it is shown in Eig. 2, the lng (l projecting into the hole f ofthe hasp when the lever is in this position, and the lug e being above the hole g of the hasp, but not projecting into or through the same. To open the satchel, the lever D is raised at the end nearest the lug d and turns upon its pintles /z i' until the corner of lug L is in contact with spring E. The lug e is by this movement ot' the lever projected through the hole g in the hasp B, and upon opening the bag by s prez'tding apart the iframe members A B the hasp, bearing against the beveled edge ot' the lug e, forces the lever back into its original position. Upon bringing the pieces A B together in closing the bag, the hasp, contacting with the beveled edge ot lug (l, raises the lever a sutlicient distance to allow the said lug to pass into hole g, and the spring E forces the lever home. i

What I claim as new is- 1. In the clasp herein described for bags or satchels, the combination, with a spring and with the lever eccentricallypivoted upon one member ot' the lframe of the bag and Vprovided with depending oppositely-beveled lugs, of a hasp secured to the other member of said frame and having holes with which said depending lugs engage alternately as the bag is opened and closed, substantially as described.
