BAG-FASTENEE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANZ A. FULLER, a
citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State ofh'ew Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
In the use of bags, pocket books, and the like, much ditficulty has been encountered in overcoming the objection raised by those who use such articles, to the spreading of the bag frame members when the contents of such bag or pocket book are such as to so distencl the sides as to make the closing of the bag or pocket book difficult. The principal objection arises from the fact that as ordinarily constructed, but a single catch or lock is provided in the center of the bag frame members for holding the same to gether, leaving the ends of the frame to be sprung apart by overcrowding the interior of the bag, with resulting annoyance and loss. In order to eliminate these evils and overcome these objections, I have devised a new fastener, to be used preferably, in combination with what is known in the art as a lift lock or fastener, secured to oneof the frame members and provided with holding means, and which is further provided with an auxiliary catch secured to the other frame member and having holding engagement with the holding means of the lift lock or fastener for additionally holding the members together and independently operated from said lift lock or fastener.
A further object of my invention consists in so constructing the auxiliary catch that in general appearance it resembles what is known as a pull-piece, usually secured to the front member, so that the auxiliary catch, when in locked position with the ordinary bag frame fastener, serves the purpose of additionally holding the members together,
and when disengaged from the fastener,
serves as a pull piece for separating the bag frame members.
Describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and
wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings,- and'in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a bag frame having applied thereto my improved fastener. Fig. 2 represents a fragmentary enlarged transversesection, taken on lines r0-xof Fig. 1, and looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. -Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section taken on lines w-aj of Fig. 2, when the operating lever is in the unlocked position as seen in dotted lines in Fig. 4, and looking in the direction indicated by the arrow; and Fig. at represents a fragmentary enlarged transverse section similar to Fig. 2 of my improved device;
A bag frame fastener made in accordance with my invention may be applied to any ordinary or desired form of frame. vThat shown in the drawings consists of two hinged members a and Z), of substantially the shape shown in Fig. 1. Near the middle portion of the frame. member a, I secure the fastener c of the lift-lock type, in any convenient or desired manner,.which is operatively connected with the frame section b by snapping or forcing the edge of the fastener overv the usual projection n, (see Fig. 4) upon the frame section b in the wellknown manner.
represents a chambered metal cap secured to the front of the bag frame member, 7) bysmeans of the pair of integral tongues e inserted through apertures in bag frame member Z) and clenched over in any suitable or convenient manner. The chambered can (Z, as illustrated, is provided on its front side with a rectangular notch f, and the struck-up bearing portions 9, for the reception of the operating lever or handle it. The operating leveror handle it is provided with a member 2', preferably formed, integral therewith, that is adapted to extend through the rectangular notch f in the chambered cap (Z, so as to bear upon the spring 7, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. The operating lever or handle it is provided with trunnions is, which are journaled between the struck-up 'bearingportions g of the chambered cap (Z.
By these means, the operating lever or handle it is pivotally supported in the chambered cap 03, and'is preventedfrom being the Y pushed outwardly through the notch in the cap (Z by the trunnions 7s, and from being pushed inwardly by the spring j.
The preferred form of my invention is illustrated in Fig. at of the drawings, in which the: operating lever 71 has formed integral therewith a projection Z of any suitable form, adapted to enter into and have holding en agement with an annular groove m or the like formed in the fastener 0.
In order to operate my improved fastener, it is first necessary to pull the operating lever or handle it into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
- This operation causes the projection Z, which is formed integral on the operating handle it, to become disengaged from the annular groove m formed in the fastener 0. The operating handle h is then utilized as a pullpiece in order to open the bag when the fastener 0 is pressed back to cause the same to become disengaged from the projection. 77. on the frame section Z).
While I have shown my preferred form, it will be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact embodiments shown, but may be modified in the various'ways in the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In combination two members movable relatively to each other, a spring-actuated fastener secured to one of said members holding said frame members together, and a spring-actuated locking device secured to the other frame member designed to have locking engagement with the fastener for additionally holding said fastener and members together and independently operated from the fastener.
2. In combination two members movable relatively to each other, a spring-actuated fastener provided. with a circumferential groove secured to one of said members holding said frame members together, and a spring-actuated locking device secured to the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner other frame member provided with locking means having locking engagement with the circumferential groove of the fastener for additionally holding said fastener and members together and independently operated from the fastener.
8. In combination two members movable relatively to each other, a spring-actuated lift fastener provided with holding means secured to one of said members holding said frame members together, and a spring-actuated locking device secured to the other frame member, comprising a chambered cap, an operating lever journaled in said cap and provided with locking means having looking engagement with the holding means of the fastener, and a spring located within the cap and adapted to bear upon said locking lever for additionally holding said fastener and members together and independently operated from the fastener.
d. In combination two members movable relatively to each other, a fastener secured to one of said members holding said frame members together, .a chambered cap secured to the other frame member provided with a notch in its front wall, and struclnup bear ing portions, a spring-actuated operating lever adapted to extend through the notch in the cap, said operating lever being provided with trunnions which are jonrnaled between the struck-up bearing portions of the cap, said operating lever being further provided with locking means having locking engagement with the holding means of the fastener for additionally holding said fastener and members together and independently operated from the fastener.
This specification signed and witnessed this 15th day of April, 1913.
