FRANZ A. FULLER, OF NEWARK, NEV] JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO 3'. E. MERGOTT COMPANY, OF NEWARK, NEVI JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
BAG-FASTENER.
Application filed December 14, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANZ A. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county-of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag- Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in catches or locks for bag or purse frames and has for its principal object to provide a strong, inexpensive, neat and simply constructed holding or locking catch for bag or purse frames, which holds the frame-sections of the bag securely closed and one which is readily and easily manipulated, and my invention also consists in details of construction of the several parts, making up the device as a whole, and in their combination as more particularly hereafter de scribed and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved fastener applied to a bag frame. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation, partly in section, of the fastener, with the nib holding element removed. Fig. i represents a sectional end view of the same, taken on lines xzc of Fig. 3. Figs. 5 and 6 represent front and end elevations of the nib holding element. Fig. 7 represents a side elevation of the bag fastener assembled; and Fig. 8 represents a fragmentary trans verse section of one of the hinge frame members, showing the fastener in position.
A bag frame fastener made in accordance with my invention, may be applied to any ordinary or desired form of frame. That shown in the drawings, consists of the two hinged members a and b, of substantially the shape shown in Fig. 8. To the middle portions of these members a and 7;, I secure the fasteners or catches c and (Z, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 2, or in any convenient or desired manner. As heretofore stated, my invention resides in the peculiar Specification of Letters latent.

structure of the fasteners 0 and (Z. They are identical in shape, and a description of one will suiiice for both.
Each fastener is made up of the rigid base 6 provided with the upwardly extending knob f, said fastener being preferably formed from cylindrical stock, a trifle larger than the diameter of the knob f, and below the knob, reduced to the diameter of the shank which connects the knob with the base, having the reduced portion bent at an angle to form the base. The base c is pro vided on its under side, which comes in contact with the frame member, when the same is secured thereto, with a beveled or angularly disposed flat surface 9 extending longitudinally of the base, and which is provided with a narrow arcuate slot or recess h, of a conformation and width conforming with the thickness and upper edge of the nib carrying element 2'.
The nib carrying element 2', preferably struck up from flat sheet metal, has its upper edge shaped to correspond with the cir oular slot or recess 7b in the base 6, and has depending from its lower edge, the integral nibs j, which are inserted through the apertures common in bag frames, and riveted down in the usual manner to secure the fastener rigidly to the frame. By means of suitable punches and dies, the nib carrying element 71 is inserted in the circular slot 71, and forced down into the bottom of the same, and thereafter brazed therein in any well-known manner to prevent accidental separation.
It will be noted from an inspection of Fig. 4 of the drawings, that the under side of the base 6, is provided with a longitudinally and angularly disposed flat surface 9, which surface rests upon the frame member to which the fastener is secured, and owing to said angularly disposed flat surface, the knob f is offset from the base, as illustrated in Fig. 8, to such an extent, that when the parts are in locked position, the knobs f have passed each other, and are in secure engagement, as illustrated in Fig. 2. With this construction, the two hinged members a and Z) always come together with a very pronounced snap, due to the spring of the hinged members a and b.
The construction shown in the drawings, enables me to produce a strong, inexpensive, neat and simple bag fastener, as distinguished from those hitherto made, which were provided with integral nibs, and made by the use of heavy punches and dies, in which it became necessary to stretch and dis tort the metal of the base to such an extent as to make them appear unsightly.
Experience has demonstrated the fact thatthe organization above described is a practical and efficient one for accomplishing the ends sought by this invention. The construction may, however, be varied in detail by those skilled in such matters, without departing from the invention.
I claim:
1. I11 a purse or bag fastener, the combination with a pair of hinged frame members, of a catch member mounted on each of said frame members for mutual cooperation, each catch member comprising a base, said base in its under side being provided with means for the reception of an attaching element.
2. In a purse or bag fastener, the combi nation with a pair of hinged frame members, of a catch member mounted on each of said frame members for mutual cooperation, each catch member comprising a base pro vided with a slot in its under side and an attaching element secured in said slot.
3. In a purse or bag fastener, the combination with a pair of hinged frame members, of a catch member mounted on each of said if time members for mutual cooperation, each catch member comprising a base having an engaging enlargement extending therefrom, and provided with a slot in its under side and a nib carrying element secured in said slot.
This specification signed and witnessed this eighth day of December 1910.
