Be it known that I, ALBERT F. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Purse or Bag Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part ot' this specification.

This invention relates generally to improvements in purse or bag frames, and more particularly to a novel construction of locking4 device or holding-catch combined with a marginal top bead suitably secured upon one of the frame-sections and arranged to overlap the joint of the two frame-sections of the purse or bag frame when closed.

This invention therefore has for its primary object to provide a neat, strong, and simple construction of purse or bag frame combining with its hinged or pvoted frame-sections a marginal bead suitably secured in its position upon one of the said frame-sections and having a locking or holding catch mechanism placed in its inner chambered part, the said catch mechanism being provided with an upwardly-extending finger-piece which projects through a slot or opening in the upper part of the said marginal oredge strip for the manipulation of the same and tho opening of the two bag-frame sections.

By means of my novel uconstruction and arrangements of the Various parts hereinafter more particularly described the employment of an eXtra lock casing or box for the hold-` then linally embodied in the various clauses of the claim.

The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front or faceview of the purse or bag frame, its marginal bead or edge strip,and the holding or locking catch, which embodies in its construction the principal features of this invention; and Fig. 2 is a top view ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the two framesections, the same being represented in their open relation and said view showing, in connection with the said frame-sections, one arrangement of fastening-lugs for securing the marginal or edge strip or bead to one of the said frame-sections and said View also illustrating with the one frame-section a portion of the under side of the hold-ing or locking catch. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section, on an enlarged scale, of the two frame-sections, the marginal or edge strip or bead, and the holding-catch mechanism, all represented in their holding or locked engagement with the parts of the closed frame-sections, said vertical section being taken centrally across the closed frame-sections and thecatch mechanism. Fig. 5 is a similar cross-section of the several parts represented in said Fig. 4, but illustrating the lock-catch mechanism in its operated position to permit of the separation or open relation of the two frame-sections, both of said sectional views beingrepresented as taken on aline 4 4 in Fig. 3. Fig. Gis avertical cross-section, on an enlarged scale, taken on line 6 6 in said Fig. 3, said view representing the two frame-sections in their closed relation and the bead or edge strip provided with an inwardly-turned supporting-lug, on which the holding-catch mechanism is placed and supported in its position in said edge or bead strip. Fig. 7 is a vertical cross-section taken on line 7 7 in said Fin". 3, representing one manner of securing the marginal edge or bead strip in its fixed position upon one of the said framesections and overlapping the joint formed by the two frame-sections when in their closed relation. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal vertical section of a portion of the edge or bead strip and a portion of the one frameseetion with which it is connected, the said View also illustrating in elevation the arrangement of thc holding-catch mechanism IOO in said edge or bead strip, with the finger'- piece of the catch projecting through a slot or opening in the top of said edge or bead strip. Fig. 9 is a blank representation of a piece of metal from which the catch device is struck up, and Figs. 10 and 11 are two perspective views of the said catch as it appears when finished. Fig. 12 is a perspective view of a portion of the edge or bead strip employed with the frame-sections, illustrating the general arrangement of the holding-lugs for securing the bead upon the one frame-section and also the inwardly-turned supporting-lugs on which the holding-catch plate represented in said Figs. 10 and 11 is placed. Fig. 13 is a perspective View of one form of spring used with the holding-catch.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.

In the several figures of the drawings, l and 2 indicate the two frame-sections, the said frame-sections 'being of any suitable shape and form and being of the usual 'lshaped cross-section, as shown. The said frame- sections 1 and 2 are each provided with the downwardly-extendin g parts 3, which terminate in the flat ends or ears 4, provided with the usual holes or perforations for the reception of the pivotal pins 5 to provide the hinge-joint of the said two frame- sections 1 and 2. Secured upon the outer surface of one of the said frame-sections, as 2, is an ornamental marginal bead or edge strip 6, the said strip also being made n-shaped in crosssection; but of course it will be understood 'that the said strip may be of any other desirable configuration in its cross-section. The said bead or edge strip 6 is formed with the downwardly extending end portions 7 and is also provided with suitably-arranged and suitablyconstructed holding -lugs 8, which are passed through correspondinglyplaced perforations or slits 9 in the said framesection 2, and are then bent over against the under and inner surface of the said framesection 2, as clearly indicated in the several lign-res of the drawings. The downwardlyextending end portions 7 of the bead or edge strip are arranged along the outer surfaces of the downwardlyextending parts 3 of the frame-section 2, as shown, and the extreme lower ends of the portions 7 are held in their Xed positions by the said pins 5, forming the pintles of the hinge-joint of the bag-frame. The said bead or edge strip 6 is also provided in one of its sides, as will be seen from an inspection of Fig. 12, with one or more openings or cut-away parts 10, and in its other sidesaid strap is provided with a pair of inwardly-extending supporting-lugs 11. The said bead or edge strip is also provided in its upper surface with a longitudinally-extending slot or opening 14. When the said edge or bead strip 6 is secured in its fixed position upon the said frame-section 2, then a portion ot the said strip 6 will project beyond the one side of the said frame-section 2, and when the frame-section 1 is closed against the section 2 it will be brought directly beneath the said overhanging part of the bead or edge strip and the joint between the two frame-sections will be fully closed. Within the chambered part of the said bead or edge strip 6, resting directly upon the inwardly-extending supporting-lugs 11 and directly beneath the longitudinal slot or opening 14, is the holdingcatch mechanism for-retaining the two framesections 1 and 2 in their closed relation when they are brought together. This lock mechanism consists, essentially, of a suitable catch-plate 15, which is made from a blank of sheet metal, as 16. (See Fig. 9 of the drawings.) The said blank is formed with a forwardlyextending member 17 and with the rearwardly-extending member 18 and end 20', which is separated from the member 1S by the incisions 19'.' 4The said blank 16 is also provided with a pair of oppositely and laterally extending members 21, each of which is provided with the projections 22 and 23. The said blank is also provided with an opening or slot 24 and a pair of perforations 25 for the purposes to be presently described.

The several members of the blank 16 are bent into the various shapes and positions indicated in Figs. 10 and 11, the member 17 being bent in a downward direction and at a `right angle, or approximately so, to the body of said plate tol'orm aholding-catch 17. The said rearwardly-extending member 18 is bent in a line in alinement with the longitudinallyplaced slot or opening 24 in such a manner to provide the upwardly-inclining arm 18 and then bent in an upward direction to for-m the vertically-arranged finger-piece member 19. The extreme free end portion 20 of this member is then bent in a downward direction and tightly closed down against the face of the member 19, as at 20, whereby a strong and serviceable finger-piece is formed of a double thickness of metal, as will be clearly seen from an inspection of Figs. 4, 5, and 10. A spring 26 is then placed upon the supporting portions 23, formed by the projections 23', hereinabove mentioned, the said spring being held in position by the loops 22, which are formed by the members 22 being bent around the parts 28 of the said spring. The said spring is also provided with an angular portion 27, which is inserted in the slot 24, so as to hold the spring in its operative position upon the said supporting portions 23 of the catch-plate against turning whenv the catch- -plate is arranged in its place in the chambered part of the bead or edge strip 6. The said spring 26 is further provided at its ends with right-angled end pieces or arms 29,which when the said spring has been secured in its operative position upon the said catch-plate extend in an upward direction from the upper surfaces of the side members 21 of th'e said plate, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 10. bered portion of the said bead or edge strip 6 so as to rest directly upon the inwardlyprojecting supporting lugs or members 11, with the iinger-piece of the catch-plate extending into and projecting through the longitudinally-arranged slot or opening 14 in the said bead or edge strip, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 4, 5, and S. At the same time the free ends of the upwardly extending end pieces or arms 29 of the spring 26 will bear iirmly against the inner surface of the said bead or edge strip, as shown, whereby the said catch-plate 15 is securely retained in its position upon the supporting-lugs 11, and the downwardly-extending holding-catch 17 of the said plate can be readily forced over suitable holding-lugs 30 in the frame-section l when the latter frame-section is closed against the frame-section 2, the said holding-lugs 30 also partly extending into the holes 25 in the catch-plate 15, all of which is clearly illustrated in said Fig. 4 of the drawings.

To separate the frame- sections 1 and 2 when it is desired to open the mouth of the bag or purse, all that is necessary is to push the finger-piece of the catch device in the direction of the arrow m in Fig. 5, whereby the holdingcatch 17 can be withdrawn from its engaged position with the straight edges of the holding-lugs 30 upon the frame-section 1, and the two frame-sections can then be separated, as will be clearly understood.

I am aware that changes may be made in the several arrangements and combinations of the various parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof, without departing from the scope of this invention. Hence I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the parts as herein described, and illustrated in the drawings, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. In apurse or bag frame, the combination, with a pair of frame-sections,and a chambered bead-strip on one of said frame-sections, said strip having a longitudinally-extending and centrally-disposed slot in its upper surface, of a holding-catch mechanism in the chamber of said strip, and an upwardly-projecting fin gerpiecc on said mechanism extending into and projecting, normally, vertically from said slot and directly above the central portion of the said strip in alinement with the central longitudinal axis of said strip, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a purse or bag frame, the combination, with a pair of frame-sections,and a chambered bead-strip on one of said frame-sections, said strip having a longitudinally-extending and centrally-disposed slot in its upper surface, of a holding-catch mechanism in the chamber of said strip, and an upwardly-projecting fingerpiece on said mechanism extending into and projecting, normally, vertically from said slot and directly above thc central portion of the poses set forth.

3. In a purse orbag frame, the combination, with a pair of frame-sections,and a chambered bead-strip on one of said frame-sections, said strip having a longitudiually-extending and centrally-disposed slot in its upper surface, and inwardly-extendin g supporting-lugs connected with said strip, of a holding-catch mechanism supported on said supporting-lugs and an upwardly-projecting finger-piece on said mechanism extending into and projecting, normally, vertically through and from the slot and directly above the central portion of the said strip in alinement with the central longitudinal axis of said strip, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4. In apurse or bag frame, the combination, with a pair of frame-sections,aud a chambered beadstrip on one of said frame-sections, said strip having a longitudinally-extending and,

centrally-disposed slot in its upper surface, and inWardly-extendin g supporting-lugs connected with said strip, of a holding-catch mechanism supported on said supporting-lugs and an upwardly-projecting finger-piece on said mechanism extending into and projecting, normally,vertically through and from the slot and directly above the central portion of the said strip in alinement with the central longitudinal axis of said strip, said catch mechanism, comprising a spring actuated catch-plate and a holding-catch 17, and holding-lugs on the other frame-section adapted to be brought in holding engagement with said catch 17, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. In a purse or bag frame, the combination, with a pair of frame- sections 1 and 2, said section 2 having lug-receiving holes, of a chambered beadstrip provided with lugs 8 arranged in said holes in the frame-section 2 and bent over against the under surface o f said frame-section, said strip having a longitudinally extending and centrally# disposed slot in its upper surface, of a holding-catch mechanism in the chamber of said strip, and an upwardly-projecting finger-piece on said mechanism extending into and projecting, normally, vertically through and from the slot and directly above the central portion of the said strip in alinement with the central longitudinal axis of said strip, substantially as and'for the purposes set forth.

6. In apurse or bag frame, the combination, with a pair of frame- sections 1 and 2, said section 2 having lug-receiving holes, of a chambered bead-strip provided with lugs 8 arranged in said holes in the frame-section 2 and bent over against the under surface of said frame-section, said strip having a longi- IOO cally through and from the slot and directly tudinallyextending and centrallydisposed slot inV itslu'pper surface, of a'holding'catch mechanism in the chamber of said strip, and an upwardly-projecting finger-piece on said mechanism extending into and projecting, normally, vertically through and from the slot and directly above the central portion of the said strip in alinement with the central longitudinal axis of said strip,said catch mechanism comprising, a spring-actuated' catchplate and aholding-catch 17, and holding-lugs on they other frame-section 1 adapted to be brought in holding engagement with said catch 17, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

7. In a purse or bag frame, the combination, witha pair of frame-sections l and 2, said section 2 having lug-receiving holes, of acharnbered bead-strip provided with lugs 8 arranged in said holes in the frame-section 2 and bent over against the under surface of said frame-section, said strip having a longitudinally-extending and centrally disposed slot in its upper surface, and inwardly-extending supporting-lugs connected with said strip, a holding-catch mechanism supported on said supporting-lugs, and an upwardlyprojecting finger-piece on said mechanism extending into and projecting, normally, vertically through and from the slot and directly above the central portion of the said strip in alinemen't with the central longitudinal axis of said strip, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. y p

8. In a purse or bag frame, the combination, with a pair of frame- sections 1 and 2, said section 2'having lug-receiving holes, of a chambered bead-strip provided with lugs 8 arranged'in said holes in the frame-section 2 and bent 'over against the under surface of said frame-section, said strip having a longitudinally-extending and centrally-disposed slot in its upper surface and inwardly-extending supporting-lugs connected with said strip, a holding-catch mechanism supported on said supporting-lugs, andan upwardlyprojecting finger-piece on said mechanism extending into and projecting, normally, yvertiabove the central portion of the said stripin alinement with the central longitudinal axis of said strip, said catch mechanism, comprising, aspring-actuated catch-plate and a holding-catch 17, and holding-lugs on the other frame -section 1 adapted to be brought in holding engagement with said catch 17, substantially asand for the purposes set forth.

9. In a purse or bag frame, the herein-described holding-catch device, consisting, essentially, of a catch-plate, a finger-piece extending in'anupward direction from said catch plate, a downwardly-extending holding-catch on said plate, a spring, supporting members 23 on which said spring rests, and holding lugs encircling portions of said spring, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

In a purse or bag frame, theherein-describedholding-catch device, consisting, essentially, of a catch-plate, a finger-piece extending in an upward direction from said catch plate, a downwardly-extending lholding-catch on said plate, aspring, supporting members 23 on which said spring rests, and holding lugs encircling portions of said spring, thesaid nger-piece being Vprovided with a slot, and said spring having an angular portion extending into said slot, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

1l. In a purse or bag frame, the combination, with the frame-sections, of a chambered bead-strip on one of said frame-sections, provided with openings 10 for the insertion of holding-lugs, and a catch device in the chamber of said strip, consisting, of a catch-plate, a finger-piece extending in an upward direction from said catch-plate, a downwardly-extending holding-catch 17 directlyback of said openings 10, a spring, supporting members 23 on which said spring rests, and lugs on said catch-plate encircling portions of said spring, `and holding-lugs on the other frame-section adapted to enter said openings 10 and engage lwith said holding-catch 17, substantially as and lfor the purposes set forth.

12. In a purse or bag frame, the combination, with the frame-sections, of a chambered bead-strip on one of said frame-sections, provided with openings 10 for the insertion of holding-lugs, and a catch device in the chamber of said strip, consisting, of a catch-plate, a finger-piece extending in an upward direction from said catch-plate, a downwardly-extending holding-catch 17 directly back of said openings 10, a spring, supporting members 23 on which said spring rests, and lugs on said catch-plate encircling portions of said spring, the said finger-piece being provided with a slot and said spring having an angularportion extending into said slot, and holding-lugs on the other frame-section adapted to enter said openings 10 and engage with said holding- Vcatch 17, substantially as and for the purposes set'forth. p v

In a purse or bag frame, the combination, with the frame-sections, of a chambered bead-strip on one of said frame-sections', provided with openings 10 for the linsertion of holding-lugs, and inwardly-extending supporting-lugs 1l on said strip,`and a catch device in the chamber of said strip, consisting, of a catch-plate resting directly upon the said supporting-lugs 11, a finger-piece extending in an upward direction from said catch-plate, a downwardly-extending holding-catch 17 directly back of said openings 10, a spring, supporting members 23 on which said spring rests, and lugs on said catch-plate encircling portions of said spring, and holding-lugs on the other frame-section adapted t-o enter said openings 10 and engage with said holdingcatch 17, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
