UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST \VM. SOHEUBER, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR 'IO SIMON ZINN, OF NEIV YORK,'N. Y.
FRAME FOR POCKET-BOOKS, etc.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,144, dated March 22, 1892.
Application filed November 21, 1891- Serial No, 412,617- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST WM. SCHEUBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Frames for Pocket-Books and other Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in frames for pocket-books and other articles; and the invention consists in the details of construction set forth in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a face elevation, partly in section, of the frame. Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of Fig. 1. Fig.4. is a detail plan view of a cover. Fig. 5 shows a spring with a cap for the finger-piece. Fig. 6 shows the spring without the cap. Fig. 7 is a detail view of the cap. Fig. 8 shows a modified form of spring. Fig. 9 is a section along 00 to, Fig. 1, the jaws being locked. Fig. 10 is a similar section with the 2 5 jaws unlocked. Fig. 11 is asection along mm,
Fig. 1, the spring being removed.
In the drawings, the letters A B indicate the jaws of the frame of apocket-book, purse, bag, or like article. To the jaw A is rigidly secured a cap or cover 0, in which is formed a depression D, in which swings a finger-piece E. The back wall D of the depression forms a back-stop, which prevents the finger-piece being swung too far up or back when the fin- 3 5 ger-piece is moved to its unlocking position. The bottom wall- D of the depression forms a front stop, which prevents the finger-piece swinging too far down. The finger-piece is moved to its locking position by a torsional o spring F.
The finger-piece E and spring Fare readily formed from a single piece of wire, as seen in Figs. 6 and 8, and the spring F can be either located at one side of the finger-piece, or, if
5 desired, the spring can be duplicated and made to extend from two sides of the finger-piece. The spring or springs extend through a hole or holes K in the end wall or walls D of the depression D. The toe or tail piece G of the spring is held or braced in a hole or eye in the jaw A, so that the proper torsion or ten sion of the spring is maintained.
The finger-piece E may be formed of wire, as seen in Fig. 8, and left uncovered, or sa1d finger-piece may be provided with a cap or shield H, which can be readily formed from sheet metal and pressed or lapped over or about the finger-piece or otherwise secured thereto. IVhen the jawsA B are swung shut, the finger-piece snaps onto or engages a lip I on jaw B, so as to hold the jaws closed. By swinging the finger-piece up or against the pressure of spring F the finger-piece will release the lip I, so that the jaws can be opened or swung apart.
The spring F is housed in the cover 0 and said cover is shown secured to jaw A by the prongs or clips L and also by the hinge pins or pintles M, by which the jaws are jointed together.
As seen in Fig. 8, the spring and finger piece can be formed from a single piece of wire, which can be so bent or shaped as to form the spring and finger piece and also the hinge pins or pintles, on which the finger-piece swings, and by thus utilizing a single piece of wire the device is both cheapened and also made durable.
I claim- 1. A frame for a pocket-book or like article, 8.0 consisting of two pivoted jaws A and B, a cap or cover O, rigidly secured to the upper edge of one jaw and havinga depression D, formed with back and front stops D D and an end wall D, having an orifice K, and a torsionspring F, secured to one jaw, extending through the orifice in the end wall of the depression of the cap or cover, and having a finger-piece E, located in the depression of the cap or cover and adapted to strike the back 0 and front stops thereof, substantially. as and for the purposes described.
2. A frame for a pocket-book or like article, consisting of two pivoted jawsA and B,acap or cover 0, rigidly secured to the upper edge of one jaw and formed with a depression D, having a back wall D, a bottom wall D and an end wall D provided with an orifice K, and a torsion-spring F, secured to one jaw, extending through the orifice in the end wall of the depression of the cap or cover, and having a finger-piece E, located in said depression and adapted to abut the back and bottom Walls of the depression, substantially as and for the 5 purposes described.
3. A frame for a pocket-book or like article, consisting of two pivoted jaws A and B, a cap or cover C, rigidly secured to the upper edge of one jaw and having a depression D, formed 10 with back and front stops D D and an end wall D having an orifice K, a torsion-spring F, extending through the said orifice and formed integral with a linger-piece E, which is located in the said depression of the cap or cover, and a cap H, secured to and overlying the finger-piece, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AUGUST WM. SOHEUBER.
