MATCHWBOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 691,183, dated January 14, 1902.
Application filed October 22, 1901. Serial No. 79,573. (No model.)
To LZZ whom, t Htc/.y con/007771,:
Beit known that I, CAESAR Sci-Linn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Superior, in the county of Nuckolls and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Match-Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a boxwhich is useful for carrying matches, snuit, 0r various other articles which are usually carried in the pocket, and it comprises such construction as enables the manner of opening the box to be kept secret ordinarily, as well as a device which, having every appearance of being the true means of opening the box, carries a pin to pierce the finger of a person pressing it.
This specification is a specilic description of one form ot the invention, while the claim is a definition of the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective View of the box open. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the box open. Fig. 3 is across-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line et 4E of Fig. 2.
The box has a bottom a, side walls a, and end walls c2, fastened rigidly together.
b represents the lid of the box, which is pivotally mounted on a rod or shaft Z9', located intermediate the side edges of the lid and near the back edge. (See Fig. 4.)
c represents a section of the back side wall, which is hingedly mounted on the. main portion of said wall and provided with a bead c',
formed by a wire or the like fastened to the hinged section. This bead is slightly yielding, so that it may spring under the adjacent edge of the top b, and thus hold said top from turning on its pivot b. However, should the hinged section c be thrown rearward, as in Figs. l and 2, the lid or cover b will then be free to move to open position. When the parts are closed, as in Fig. 3, the hinged seetion c holds the lid firmly in position.
The side and end Walls ot' the box are formed with a groove d therein, such groove running into the hinge of the section c of the back wall, so that the box is given the appearance of having a cover with downwardly-projecting flanges, such cover appearing to be hinged at the hinge of the section c.
c represents a button which is located in the front wall of the box and held in normal position by a springf. This button will appear to the ordinary observer as being the means of releasing the catch which holds the cover ot the box closed. The button e is formed with a passage therein, and within this passage is situated a pin g, held in position bya bridge g within the box. Nowwhen the button e is pushed in, the pin g being stationary will necessarily pierce the finger of the person pushing the button.
Now it will be seen that by this construction a person not familiar with the box will be painfully surprised upon attempting to open it, whereas one knowing the secret may readily enough throw back the hinged section c and press on the cover b to raise it into the open position shown. In fact the parts are so carefully arranged in this respect that by a single movement the box may be :readily thrown open.
Various changes in the form, proportions, and minor detailsof my invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope ot' the same. Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the scope of my claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A box having its top wall formed of a lid mounted in opposite side walls of the box, to swing about a pivot intermediate the front and rear edges of the lid, and the rear wall of the box being formed of a rigid lower part and a hinged upper part, said upper part lying when in closed position in the plane of the lower part and swinging outward to open, the hinged part of the wall having a head arranged to bear under the adjacent edge of the lid to hold the same closed.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CAESAR SCI-IAER.
