To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN P. MOYNIHAN, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hinges and consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
My improved hinge is of that type commonly known as slip off hinges and com prises two leaves, which when in one relative angular position may be uncoupled or separated from each other. trated the same as being used in connection with a water motor driven washing machine of the dolly type so that the tub lid on which the motor and its associated dolly are carried, is pivotally and detachably connected to the stationary top wall of the tub body; My improved hinge permits the tub lid to be swung upwardly froma closed hori-' zontal position to a substantially vertical open position and also provides means adapted to arrest and support the same in said vertical position, giving access to the 7 interior of the tub. My improved hinge permits of a ready and easy detachment of the lid'and the parts carried thereby from the tub body. Such detachment is of particular advantage when it is desirable, especially in cold weather to remove the tub lid so that the same may be moved indoors to protect the motor against damage by freezing.

Referring more in detail to that embodiment of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing 10 indicates as a whole, a water motor driven Washing machine of the dolly type, having a stationary top wall member 11 and and 12 hinged thereto by means of a pair of my improved hinges 1515. The lid 12 carries a depend-f ing dolly shaft 13 and a water motor 14: of the reciprocating piston type, which is operatively connected to said dolly shaft 13 so as to impart an oscillatory rotary move ment thereto in a familiar manner. Said hinges l515- are identical in construction is provided with an integral bearing hook member 16 Said hook extends substantially the width of the plate 16 and is made preferably in the form of a tubularextension having aslot 16 therein which communicates with an annular bearing surface 16 formed in said tubular extension. 16 16 indicate shoulder members formed onthe top and bottom edges of said plate 16 adjacent the ends of the hook member 16*.
Said shoulders project into a plane above the plane of the hook member and extend rearwardly and downwardly toward that edge of the plate opposite the hook member 16*. The forward ends of said shoulders are tion and form abutting shoulders 16?16 against which coacting members formed on the leaf 17 abut, when the tub lid 12 is raised to its substantially vertical open position. The leaf member 17 comprises a plate 17* inclined downwardly in an opposite direc- 7-5 and a description of one will suffice for both. Y
of a shape, similar to that of the plate 16 of the leaf 16. Made integral with said plate adjacent one edge thereof, and in a plane above said plate is formed a cylindric bar 17 which is attached to said plate by means of rearwardly extending arms 17 and 17. Said arms are provided on their upper edges with shoulders Ti -17 which are adapted to coact with and abut against the shoulders 1616" of the leaf 16 when the tub lid is swung about its axis into an open position. The abutment of the shoulders l7 17 against the shoulders 16 16 serves to arrest the tub lid in said position, which is just back of the vertical. Said shoulders thus act to form stops for the tub lid when in said open position. The cylindrical bar 17* which forms the pintle of the hinge, is of a diameter fitting within the annular bearing surface 16 and has rotative bearing therein when the leaves 16 and 17 are coupled together as will be presently described.
The arm 17 adjacent the shoulder 17 is cut away to form a notch 17 so that the width of the said arm at this point is less than the width of the slot 16. When the parts are in the relative angular position illustrated in Fig. 5, with the axis of the bar 17* in line with the longitudinal axis of the hook 16", said leaf may be moved in a direction parallel to the above mentioned axis, peimitting the two leaves 16 and 17 to be coupled together in the manner in which the ordinary sprocket chain links are coupled together. When so coupled together, and in any relative angular position with the exception.of the angular position just described. lateral movement of one leaf relative to the other is impossible, for the reason that the ends of the hook member will act as shoulders against which the inner surfaces of the arms 17 and 17 engage.
Should it be desired to remove the lid from the tub body, said lid is swung upwardly into the angular position shown in Fig. 5 and a' lateral movement of said lid away from wringer board 25 of the tub 10, will uncouple said hinge leaves fixed to the lid from the leaves fixed to the tub body, when the lid 12 may then be removed.
It is desirable especially with a washing machine of the type above described, to be able to remove said lid from the tub body when the washing machine is used out of doors or in a laundry wherein freezing may occur, so that the motor may be removed to a location where freezing of same cannot take place. It is apparent that the effort required in removing the tub lid from a washing machine equipped with my improved hinges is materially less than that required to move an entire washing machine within doors or to a place where such freezing cannot occur.
Hinges made in accordance with the construction just described comprise only two pieces performing at the same time the functions of the ordinary hinges and also the separate stops, used to support the tub lid in the open vertical position described. baid hinges will permit the packing of one machine up on the otht r without the marring of the painted tops of said machines when the same are packed or stored as they now are in warehouses and like places.
While in describing my invention it have referred to certain details of mechanical construction and arrangement of parts, 1 do not wish to limit myself thereto except as may be pointed out in the appended claim.
I claim as my invention:
A hinge of the kind described consisting of two leaf members, said leaf memberseach comprising a plate one of which is pro 'vided with a laterally extending hook mem her in which is formed a cylindrical bearing surface the axis of which is located in a plane above the top surface of the plate, inclined shoulders on said plate at the ends of the hook member, said shoulders blending into the bearing surface of said hook member, the plate of the other leaf member having a pintle member spaced laterally therefrom in a plane above the top surface thereof, said pintle being adapted for bearing engagement with the cylindric bearing surface of the hook member before mentioned, arms connecting the ends of said pintle member to said plate, shoulders formed on said arms, said shoulders being adapted for abutting engagement with the shoulders on the first mentioned plate, when said second mentioned plate member is swung about the axis of its pintle member within the bearing surface of the hook member through an angle greater than 90, said leaf members being adapted to be operatively disconnected from each other in an endwise direction when in one angular position relative to each other.
