Be it known that I, GEORGE J. honor, a citizen of the United States, res1d1ng at Kirksville, in the county of Adair and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements .in Folding Tables, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in folding tables and has particular application to a table which may be folded into the form of a suit case to facilltate carrying thereof from place to place.

In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a folding table of the class described wherein the component parts will be so arranged and correlated as to enable the table to be set up and folded quickly and conveniently and which will be so connected to one another as to reduce the possibility of derangement to a minimum.

It is also my purpose to provide a table of the class described which may be put to a variety of uses, which may be folded into small compass, and which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, efiiciency and durability and capable of cheapness of cost 1n manufacture and marketing. F

With the above and other objects in v ew, the invention consists in the construction,

combination and arrangement of parts her'eand falling within the inafter set forth in scope of theclaim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in side elevation of a table constructed in accordance with the present intion. Fig. 2 is an inverted perspective view of the table showing the parts partly folded. .Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the table in open position. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view through the same. Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a similar view on the line 6-6 of like View on the line 7-7 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a view in elevation of one of the pivot plates. Fig. 9 is a view in edge elevation of the table folded. Fig. 10 is a view in side elevation of the same.

'Referring now to the drawings in detail, 1 designates the top of the table. This top embodies side bars 2 and end bars'3 and is formed of two sections 4, 4placed end to end and capable of swinging movement into and out of top formation.

,5, 5 designate connecting plates disposed projecting toward the ad side bar of the table the same being shown in open posi-- fwith right angularly shaped slots 7, 7 disposed at the opposite sides respectively of the vertical center line of the plate, each slot having one portion arranged vertically and the remaining portion horizontally and jacent side edge of the plate, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 8 of the drawings. Arranged at the opposite ends of each longitudinal side bar of the table top are vertical legs 8 of suitable length and mounted upon each leg 8 at the upper end thereof is a bearing ing one end portion secured'to the leg and the remaining end portion'overlying the upper end of the leg and fastened thereto. That portion of the plate 9 between the lower extremity thereof and the upper extremity is bowed outwardly from the adjacent side of the leg as at 10 and formed with an opening 11 that receives the a pivot pin 12 carried by the portlon of the particular end of the top, thereby forming a pivotal connection between the leg and the side bar of the table top. Pivotally connected to the side bars of the table top in advance of the legs 8 respectively are levers adjacent present instance, one edge of each lever 13 adjacent to the lower extremity thereof is formed with a slot 17 that is adapted to recelve one end wall of the slot 14 to hold the leg against swinging movement, and. the portion of the lever 13 below the slot 15 is preferably turned outwardly as at 18 to prevent the accidental separation of the lever and bracket. Pivotally secured to the upper extremity of each lever 13 is one end of a link 19 and the remaining ends of the links 19 upon each side of the table top project toward the particular plate 5 at such side of the table top and are provided with 19 reinforce the top of the table, the pins 20 resting Within the outwardly projecting por-' I tions of the respective slots 7. The links 19 also act upon the levers 13 to hold the notched portions thereof in engagement with the end walls of the slots 14 so as to maintain the legs 8 in vertical position.

To fold the table, the latter is inverted and the sections 4, 4 of the top swung slightly toward each other about the pivotal connections between such sections and the plates 5 and in this movement of the sections of the top, the levers 13 are relieved of the holding action of the links 19 .and may be swung about their pivotal connections with the side bars of the table top to relieve the notched portions of the influence of the outwardly projecting limbs of the brackets 16. The legs are now folded onto the respective sections of the top and the sections swung together, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and in the continued movement of the sections of the table top toward each other, the pins 20 on the'inner ends of the links 19 ride into the normally vertical portions of the respective slots 7 thereby permitting the table to be folded together, as shown in Fig. 9.

The sections of one of the longitudinal bars of the table are preferably provided with hooks 21 adapted to be connected to the ends respectively of a handle 22, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 10 of the drawings, to facilitate carrying of the folded table. It will be seen that when the table is folded a suit case like structure is formed, thereby enabling the table to be transported from place to place readily and conveniently. Any suitable locking means may be employed for holding the parts of the table folded.
