SARAH O. BURCI-IFIELD, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING BASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,873, dated May 10, 1898.
Application led November 24, 1896; `|Serial No. 613,240. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SARAH O. BURCHFIELD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have i11- vented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Baskets, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in folding baskets, and has for its object to construct a basket designed principally for market use that may be neatly and compactly folded when empty and that will when in the built-up form present a rigid and firm construction.
The invention further aims to construct a folding basket that will be extremely simple in its construction, strong, durable, effectual in its operation, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Vith the above and other objects in view the invention nally consists in the novel construction, combinatiomand arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views,in which- Figure l is a front or side elevation of my improved folding basket. Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a side view showing the basket in the folded position.
Referring now to the drawings by reference-letters, a indicates the front, which is hinged to the end pieces b b. The opposite side c is likewise hinged to these end pieces b and provided at their lower edge with eyelets dd. The base c is also provided with eyelets g g, and a rod h, inserted through these eyelets d d and g g, forms a hinge and fastens the side piece c to the base-piece e, said base being formed in two pieces and.1 hinged together at the center. This basepiece is also provided with hasps k 7c, adapted to engage staples Z Z, secured in the front a,
said eyelets being adapted to receive a fastening-rod fm, having a dart n swiveled in its one end, and at the opposite end carrying aspring o, fastened to the front a. This front a also carries near its top a hook p to receive the eyelet q, carried in the one end of the handle a", the opposite end of said handle being fastened by eyelet s and staple s to the side piece c. p
The basket is shown herewith inthe builtup form, and when it is desired to fold the same the dart n is turned so as to be in alinement with the rod m, as is shown in dotted lines, when the rodm can be withdrawn from its staples and the haspsremoved. After the handle r has been detached from its hook p the sides and ends will then swing together, the one end swinging in and the other end swinging out. The hinged bottom may then be folded on itself, and the basket is reduced to the thickness of the two sides, one end, and the bottom or base.
In the drawings I have shown the relative side, ends, and base as formed of solid material, yet it will be readily understood that these may be composed of any of the ordinary materials commonly employed for baskets.
It will also be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention. v
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a folding basket, side and end pieces hinged together; a base formed in two pieces hinged together, said base being hinged to the rear side piece, hasps carried by said base, said hasps engaging staples secured in the front side, a securing-rod having a swiveled dart in one end and fastened to the front piece by a spring at the other and a detachable handle secured to the front and rear side pieces, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SARAH O. BUROHFIELD.
