SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 773,500, dated October 25, 1904.

Be it known that I, IVILLIAM HIZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lyons, in the county of Ionia and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Baskets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.

This invention relates to improvements in folding' baskets.

The object of the invention is to provide a basket of thischaracter which may be quickly and easily folded into a small package.

A further object is to provide a folding basket which will be simple, strong, and durable, and inexpensive, and the parts of which are all connected together. Y

In the-accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a basket constructed in accordance with the invention and showing the same opened in position for use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-sectional view. Fig. 4 is a side view showing the parts in folded position. Fig. 5 is a top plan view with the parts as shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view showing a modified construction. Fig. 7 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing the manner of attaching' the sides of the basket to 'the bottom of the same.

Referring' more particularly tothe drawings, l denotes the basket, which may be of any suitable shape and size. 2 denotes a bottom, formed of heavy pasteboard, wood, or metal. 3 denotes the sides of the basket, formed of heavy paper, cloth, or other flexible fabric. The edge of the bottom 2 is rabbeted, and a narrow groove 4 is formed in the rabbet, the lower edge of the bottom 2 thus projecting beyond the sides and ends of the basket to protect the body portion thereof. Into the groove Il the lower edge of the fabric forming the sides is drawn by a Wire 5, thereby firmly securing the lower edge of the sides to the bottom. strips, or bands 6, of metal or other suit; able material, which are riveted or otherwise secured together to form binding strips or rims for the sides.

p The basket is provided with one or more handles 7 which are preferably either circular or elliptical in form and constructed of a strip of spring metal, wood, or other suitable material, and are pivotally connected, as at 8, to the inner side of the binding strips or bands 6 in such a manner that when the basket is open in a position for use the handle will be in an upright position at right angles to the binding strips or bands 6. The upper half of the handle projects above the top of the basket, while the lower half of the same projects down into the basket and engages the bottom of the same and is sprung into a recessor groove 9. The flexible material of which the handles are constructed'and the shape of the same permits them to yield when forced against the bottom to bring them to an upright position, and when said position is reached the lower side of the handle will have sprung into the recess or groove 9, which will hold the same in an upright position.

In turning the handle or handles on their pivots to bring the same to an upright position the rim formed by the binding-strips 6 and the fabric forming the sides of the same will also be raised by said handle or handles, and when said handles enter the recesses in the bottom of the basket the sides of the same will be supported thereby in an open or unfolded position. To lower the sides and fold the basket, the handle is sprung out of the groove 9, when it may be turned on its pivotal connections and folded to lie within and Hush with binding-strips on the bottom of the basket, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.

If desired, additional meansmay be pro-- vided for holding the handle or handles in an upright position, said means consisting of a spring-catch 10, secured to the bottom and having formed therein a notch or offset 12, which projects into the recess 9 in the bottom of the basket, so that when ,the handle is turned to an upright position to open or unfold the basket the inner portion ot the same will engage said catch l() and spring into the notch or offset l2, thereby retaining the sides of the basket in an open position.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation ot' the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the forni, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing' from the principle or saerilicing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isd

l. A folding basket comprising a rigid bot-- tom provided with a rabbeted and grooved edge, a 'liexible body portion secured at its lower edge within the groove of the bottom by a binding-wire, the lower edge of the bottom projecting beyond the body portion of the basket, a rigid binding-strip secured to the upper edge ol' the body portion, an oval handle made ot' elastic material and pivoted to the bindingstrip, and the upper surface of the basket-bottom having a curved groove for retaining the handle in a vertical position to hold the basket open, substantially as described.

2. A folding basket comprising a rigid bottom having' a rabbeted and grooved edge and a projecting lower edge portion to protect the basket-body, a folding basket-body secured in the groove of the bottom by means ot' a binding-wire, a binding-strip secured to the upper edge of the folding body portion, an elliptical spring-handle pivoted to said binding-strip, the upper surface of the basket-bottom having a curved groove and a springcatch in said groove to engage the handle, substantially as described.
