BAS KET.
SPECLICTION formingpart cf Letters Patent No. 712,921, dated. November l4:, 1902.
Application led March Z7, 1902. Serial No. 100,317. (No model.)
To all whom it muy) concern:
Beit known that I, EMIL A. FLORANG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Burlington, in the countyof Des Moines and State of Iowa, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Baskets; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which'form a part ofthis specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my basket. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with cover removed. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail bottom plan view of the cover. Fig. 5 is a detail fragmentary view of the joint between the two sections of the cover. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the ice-tank. Fig. 7 is a detail fragmentary view of the joint between cover and basketbody.
The invention relates to baskets adapted mainly to be used for picnics and excursions; and it consists Vin the novel construction and combinations of parts,as hereinafter set forth.
tom ofthe wicker side ,which is formed of broad upright strips e, interlaced with wickerwork f. The strips e are secured to the board bottom by means of tacks or other fastenin gs, and around the upper portion of the basket extend inner and oVuterbinding-strips g, forming a strong flush margin. The inner marginal strip is somewhat thick, being so made not only to afford strength to support the metallic inner case h, but also to provide for the packings or linings of felt, hair, and asbestos, or similar non-conducting material, which extend around said metallic inner case, as indicated at k. material is placed next the wicker-work, and felt lo of loose texture is placed between the asbestos' and the metallic inner case, so that a kind of air-chamber `is provided, which is of advantage in protecting said case from external heat, these baskets being chiefly used in warm weather. The wicker-work being The asbestos k being the closest,
light compensates somewhat for the weight of the metallic inner case and ybeing strong around the curves affords, in conjunction with the packings, protection to said case, which is made of thin metal.
The inner case is made of proper shape to conform to that of the basket-body, but is somewhat smaller, so that it does not touch said body either at the side or bottom, being separated therefrom by the air-chamber and the packings therein. A marginal iiange l of the inner case extending outward bears on the strip margin of the basket-body. This flange is made with a rib bend ,e in its upper surface to engage the marginal felt packing of the folding wooden cover m.
A transverse tie-rod p extends through the marginal strips across the middle of the basket and serves to hold its sides in shape with reference to the metallic inner case and to x and support the middle of the folding cover,
which is composed oftwo wings w, hingedtogether, and has a middle groove t to engage said rod. The cover-wings are lined With metal and each has a marginal rabbet o, to
which is attached a packing-strip s, extending around said rahbet and adapted to engage the iiange of the metallic inner case, thereby closing the case against the admission of air. The transverse edge of one or both wings is also provided with packing engaging the transverse tie-rod.
At one end of the inner case is located the removable ice-tank o, which is also made of sheet metal and is of segmental shape in plan view, its curved wall fitting neatly against the curved end wall of the metal case, which is provided with lateral guide-lugs to hold the tank in position.
Suitable straps are usually attached to the basket-body, which are designed to be fastened together over the cover to hold it securely in position. The basket-body is usually provided with two bail-form handles, whereby in the carrying it is easily held in level or approximately level position.
When made of ratan and hickory or elm and lined with non-corrosive metal packed with hair, felt, and asbestos, it will be found a strong article. The removable'ice-tank fitting neatly in one end of the basket is adapted when full of ice to keep the contents of the basket sweet and cool during a warm summer day. This refrigerator-basket is light and strong and of convenient rounded shape, being adapted to use in such Ways as ordinary baskets are employed. The basket is designed to be finished in natural wood and varnished, so that it will present a neat and attractive appearance while serving purposes of comfort and convenience.
Having described the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
In a picnic or excursion basket, the twopart cover, having its sections hinged t0- gether, and provided with a transverse groove
