CHARLES LENFANT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO OOELESTINE LENFANT, OF NEWT YORK, N. Y.
COVER FOR BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,530, dated January 28, 1896.
Appiimionnediipms,1895. salaire. 544,264. (remodel.)
To @ZZ when@ t may con/cern.'
Le it known that I, CHARLES LENFANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of'Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in the cover for books for which Letters Patent were heretofore granted to me, No. 492,925, dated `arch 7, 1893, whereby certain defects of said cover are overcome and a still better iinish at the rounded-off corners of the cover obtained.
Practical experience made with books bound with the cover heretofore patented to me show that the connection of the overlapping corner-pieces with the inwardly-bent sides of the cover become frequently loose by the handling of the book and rendered the corners unsightly.
The object of this invention is to construct the rounded-off corners of the cover in such a manner that a permanently-finished corner is obtained, which is not liable to get loose in any of its parts, and which presents thereby a permanently-finished and very durable corner for the covers.
The invention consists of a flexible cover for Bibles, prayer and other books which is made of a main body having inwardly-bent sides and of an arc-shaped narrow edge-piece extending around the roundedb corners of the main body and adapted to overlap the inwardly-bent sides, said narrow overlapping piece being worked down by creasing, so as to be permanently attached to the rounded off corner and prevented from getting loose.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an inside elevation of myimproved flexible cover for books. Fig. 2 is an inside view of the blank of one corner of the cover, drawn on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a detail View of one of the corners of the cover, show- Fig. 4 is a like view of one of the corners, showing it in Iinished state; and Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section on line 5 5, Fig. 4.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a flexible cover for Bibles, prayer and other books, which cover is made of leather or other suitable material having the required degree of flexibility. The main body of the cover A is made from a blank A", which is provided with rounded-off corners a, having at each corner a narrow strip a', that extends along the rounded-off corner of the main body, and which strip is skived or pared off at its edge. The blank A is further provided with sides d, which are cut off preferably at an angle of forty-five degrees at the corners and made arc shape adjacent to the main body of the blank, as at a2, so thatwhen the sides d Cl are bent inwardly and pasted onto the main body after being skived or pared off at their under side the arc-shaped edges of the sides d coincide with the rounded-olf .edge of the corner a of the main body, while the straight edges of the sides d d abut, as shown in Fig. 3. The blank A is cut on a sheet-metal form having rounded-olf corners, said blank corresponding to the size of the' cover to be produced. The sides d CZ are then bent inwardly over said frame, after which t-he narrow corner-pieces are also bent over and shaped carefully on the round corners of the frame.' The forni is then withdrawn, and the inwardlybent sides and narrow corner pieces are pasted to the main body of the cover, so that finally the cover is formed with smooth and rounded-off corners, as shown in Figs. 1 and et. The narrow arc-shaped corner-piece a is made to overlap the inwardly-bent sides and is carefully worked down and nally creased by means of a creasing-tool, which is specially passed over the inner skived edge of the overlapping corner-piece, as shown in Fig. 5, so that the same is united to such an extent with the sides that the meeting-edges of the corner-piece cannot be perceived, whereby not IOO ners is thus obtained that extends over the body of the book and forms a neat, strong and durable cover for the saine.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A flexible cover for Bibles and other books, composed of a main-body having rounded-oft' corners,inwardly-extending side pieces bent from t-he main-body and formed with curved edges, merging directly from the straight side edges of the main-body and conforming to the curvature of and matching with the roundedol'l corners of the mainbody, said side-pieces being also formed with straight ends, arranged at an angle of fortyfive degrees to the longitudinal edges thereof, and joined so as to extend radially inward from the corners of the main-body, and narrow arc-shaped corner-pieces extending inwardly from the rounded-ott corners of the main-body and overlapping the curved parts of the inwardly-bent side-pieces, the sideedges of the corner-pieces extending from the straight side-edges of the main-body substantially as set forth.
2. A blank for flexible covers Vof books, provided with narrow arc shaped cornerpieces in recesses formed in its corners, and sidepieces provided with straight outer ends each at an angle of forty-five degrees to the longitudinal edge of the side, and with inwardly curved edges extending from said straight outer ends to the folding line of the said pieces, the portions of the side-pieces bounded by said straight outer edges and the curved edges extending beyond the cornerpieces, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my naine in presence of two subscribing witnesses.

PAUL GOEPEL, GEORGE W. JAEKEL.
