Be it known that I, .loi-1N SCHADE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and yState of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book Covers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rIhis invention relates to book covers, but more particularly has reference to articles of this description that comprise a back portion to which is secured a ringcarrying structure, and flexible'covers hinged to said back portion, this style of device being commonly known as a ring binder.
The particular object of the invention is to so construct the metal back plate that it will not only provide complementary hinge portions but will also firmly secure to the back of saidplate a facing of any suitable non-metallic material such as leather, fabric and some kinds of paper.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure l is a plan view of the inside of the completed book cover with the covers opened- Figures 2 and 3 are sections respectively at the lines 2 2 and 3--3 of Figure l, and
Figure 4: is a. detail sectioned perspective of the completed back portion.
Similar numerals of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
l is any suitable non-metallic back and 2 is a metal plate superimposed thereon. At the side edges of this plate are integral spaced fingers 3 which are bent and formed into projecting spaced alined eyes 4, the eX- tremities of the fingers being clenched at 5 into the outside face of the back 1 near the edges thereof, so that it will be clear that the plate will not only stiften the back and keep it fromV being distorted or Wrinkled, but will also serve as the sole means for securely binding the back and plate together.
1923. Serial No. 654,299,
At suitable locations the plate is pierced to accommodate eyelets 6 (only one sho-Wn) which rise from the plate and to which the usual ring structure is secured.
The bottom face of the plate is countersunk as at 7 to accommodate the head of the eyelet.
S arevthe `covers which are flexible and preferably made of leather or any suitable non-metallic penetrable material, and at the inner edges of these covers are projecting lspaced alined metal eyes 9 formed from a strip of metal having staggered spaced fingers 10 extending from opposite sides, one set of fingers being clenched to one face of a cover while the other set is bent and formed 'into the eyes 9 and has its extremities clenched into the other face of such cover.
The eyes 4 and 9 are then interengaged and pintles 11 inserted therethrough to complete the hinging.
No claim is made to the metal strip attached to the covers, but the manner of forming the completed back portion affords a very economical and durable structure that is peculiarly adapted to the hinge elements carried by the covers.
What is claimed is:
The hereindescribed improvement in book.
covers, which consists of 'a back portion of non-metallic penetrable material, a metal plate superimposed upon the inner face of said portion said plate having integral therewith along its side edges a series of fingers that are bent and formed into space alined projecting eyes, the extremities of said fin. gers being clenched into the outer face of said back portion, iiexible covers having secured along their inner edges a series of alined and spaced projecting eyes, the eyes of the back portion and covers being inter engaged, and pintles inserted through said eyes.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature hereto.
