' BOOK COVER.
Application filed. July 28, 1928.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHN Sermon, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book Covers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as, will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to book covers, but more particularly refers to book covers which have a stiff back portion and flexible side covers, preferably of leather, that are hinged to the side edges of the back portion.
The object of the invention is to utilize a well known type of hinge elements that are secured in such manner to the parts of the cover, that the latter is exceedingly durable and attractive, while the side covers themselves are opened and closed with the greatest facility.
Referring to the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is an interior view of the completed book cover with the side covers fully opened.
Figure 2 a section. at the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 a section at the line 3-3 of Figure 1'.
Figure 42 a detail elevation of one of the hinge elements, and
Figure 5 is a detail sectioned perspective of a modified form of back portion equipped with hinge elements.
Similar numerals of reference denote like parts in the several. figures of the drawing.
1 is an outside back portion, preferably of leather, although it may be any suitable fabric or non-metallic material, 2 a metal plate, preferably concavo-convex in cross section although it may be straight in some instances, superimposed upon the inner face of the portion 1, and 3 are flexible strips of any suitable soft penetrable material, such as fabric, leather or some kind of paper, which rest upon the upper face of the plate 2 said strips beinig glued to the plate or not as occasion may demand.

ofspaced fingers 5, 6, the fingers of one series being staggered with respect to the fingers of the other series.
These fingers are bent around, the fingers 6 having their extremities clenched within the outer face of the leather portion 1, while the fingers 5 are bent so as to form alined eyes 7, the extremities of these fingers being then clenched within the strips 3.
This clenching of these fingers holds the portion 1 and the metal plate 2 firmly in their proper relative positions, as clearly shown in the drawing.
A metal strip like that shown at Figure 4 and heretofore described has its fingers bent and clenched into the edges of the cover portions 8 the shorter finger 6 being clenched into the outer faces of the covers, while the longer fingers 5 are bent so as to form alined eyes 9, their extremities being then clenched into the inner faces of the covers.
These eyes 7 and 9 are then interengaged and the pintle 10 inserted therethrough so as to complete the hinging of the covers. The ring structure (not shown) is secured in position in the usual manner by means of the eyelets (only one shown) 11, the plate 2 being perforated and having a countersunk portion 12 formed in its outer face to accommodate the head of the eyelet.
Referring to Figure 5, there has been provided a leather back portion 13 whose side edges are folded around the metal plate 2, these edges, denoted by the numeral 1 1-, being then turned down over and against the side edge portions of such plate.
When the hinged strip is positioned it is bent and clenched just as in the manner described with respect to Figure 1.
It will, of course, be readily understood that no novelty whatever is claimed for the particular form of hinged strip shown at Figure 4, since all that is aimed at in this application is the adaptation of this strip in a novel manner for the formation of the book cover referred to.
What is claimed is 1. The herein described improvement in book covers, which consists of a back portion comprising an elongated metal plate, a facing of non-metallic material on the back of said plate, non-metallic penetrable material imposed on the inner face of said plate,
a metal strip having extending from opposite side edges series of spaced fingers, the fingers of one series being staggered with respect to the fingers of the other series, one series of fingers having their extremities clenched into the non-metallic material on one face of the metal plate while the other series of fingers are bent to form alined eyes that project from the side edges of said back portion and their extremities then clenched into the nonmetallic material on the other face of said metal plate, flexible non-metallic covers, metal.
strips having extending from opposite side edges series of spaced and staggered fingers which are'clenched into the covers near the inner edges and on opposite faces thereof the fingers of one series being bent to form ali-ned eyes prior to clenching that project from the inneredges of said covers, the eyes at the edges of the back portion and at the inner edges of the covers bein interengaged and alined to formcomplementary hinge elements, and pintles inserted within said elements.
2. A book cover comprising a back portion consisting of a metal plate faced on both sides with a non-metallic pcnetrable material, alined hinge eyes projecting from the side edges of said back portion formed by a series of oppositely projecting and staggered fingers one side of which is bent around to form the eyes and with their extremities clinched into said material on one face of the plate, the other side being bent around and clinched into said material on the other face of said plate, whereby the latter is hehl in position, flexible side covers having alined hinge eyes along their inner edges, the eyes of the back portion and side covers being interengaged, and a pintle inserted through said eyes.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature hereto.
JOHN SCHADF.
