PATENT OEEIcE.
BOOK-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 763,554, dated June 28, 1904.
Application filed December 10, 1903. Serial No. 184,570. (No model.)
To (l/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL L. GREENE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improved guards and protecting-strips for books and the like, and is adapted to'be secured along the lower end of the book-cover.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described by the use of which a book may be very readily removed or withdrawn from a shelf upon which it may be standing; and a further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which will protect the binding and cover of the book.
It has been customary when withdrawing a book from its place upon the shelf of a bookcase or similar receptacle to grasp the book at its upper rear end and tilt the bookforwardly by pressure of the hand upon the rear upper edge of the binding. This method, however,
is a very detrimental one, as it weakens the.
binding at that point and eventually breaksit. It is to obviate this objection, as well as with the other objects mentioned, that I have devised my invention, which I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book resting upon a shelf and provided with my attachment. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of my invention detached from the book. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a part of the invention. Fig. 4 is a plan of a part of the invention. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a part of a modified form of my invention. Fig. 6 is a crosssection of the lower part of a book, showing a modified form attached thereto. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of another modified form of my invention.
In practice I provide a strip (0, having a channel formation 6, in which the lower edge a of the book a is adapted to engage. One
end of the channel-strip a is closed, as at 6 and the front end of the book a is adapted to engage in the channel 6 and against the closed end 6 The opposite end of the strip a is formed with a laterally-projecting lip 0, to which is attached a button 0 having an enlarged head 0".
Each book is provided with a set of strips, as shown in Fig. 2, and attached to the said strips is a flap or lip d, and the said flap or lip (Z is split partially up its center at e and is provided with the eyelets (Z which are adapted to engage over the headso of the buttons 0 The eyelets (Z and buttons 0 are so constructed as to be easily connected and disconnected, and the said flap d may be provided with two or more of the eyelets (Z thereby providing a means for adjusting the flap to any length of book.
In Fig. 5 I show a modification wherein I provide a channel-stripf, formed with a laterally-projecting flange f and a second channel-strip f which is connected to the strip f by means of the links f and f This construction may be employed, if desired, upon very large books, in which case the length of the strip f may be adjusted to suit the length of the edge of the book-cover. The channeled member f is adapted to engage along the front edge. of the book, and the link members provide a means of adjusting the device to the length of the lower edge of the book-cover, over which the channeled member f is adapted to engage. In Fig. 6 I show how the two parts of this modified form are attached to the lower edges of the book.
In Fig. 7 I show a modified form wherein I provide the two channel members 9 and It, which are telescopicallyattached and held by means of the slot formation 41 and overlapping lips or lugs f. This latter form of construction, while not most desirable for ordinary purposes, may be employed for very heavy work.
In all of the forms shown, with the exception of that shown in Fig. 7, the split a in the flap or lip (Z permits of the opening of the book without the removal of the device. The said flap may be of any desired shapeand may be marked or indexed in any suitable manner. It is obvious that I may embody various modifications in the construction of my device without departing from the spirit of my invention. I do not therefore wish to be un- 'dcrstood as limiting myself to the particular construction shown.
hat I claim is 1. A protecting device for books and the like having means whereby it may be secured along the edge of the book-cover, and means adjustably attached to the said protecting device, for withdrawing the book from the shelf, substantially as described.
2. A protecting device for books and the like, comprising a channeled member adapted to be attached to the edge of the book-cover, a flap or lip adjustably attached to the said member and providing a means for withd raw; ing the book from the shelf, substantially. as described.
3. A protecting device for books and the like, comprising channeled members adapted to be attached to the edge of the book-cover, a flap or lip fastened to the said members, and means provided upon the said members and flap for adjusting the said flap, substantially as described.
4. A protecting device for books and the like having means whereby it may be secured along the lower and rear edge of the bookcover, pivotally-connected link members provided upon the said device between the lower and upper members thereof and adapted to provide a means for adjusting the device to the length of the book, substantially as described.
5. A protecting device for books and the like having means whereby it may be secured along the lower and rear edge of the bookcover, pivotally-connected link members provided upon the said device between the lower and upper members thereof and adapted to provide a means for adjusting the device to the length of the book, and means attached to the said protecting device and extending beyond the back of the book for withdrawing the book from the shelf, substantially as described.
6. A protecting device for books and the like having means whereby it may be secured along the lower and rear edge of the bookcover, pivotally-connected link members provided upon the said device between the lower and upper members thereof and adapted to provide a means for adjusting the device to the length of the book, and means adjustably attached to the said protecting device, for withdrawing the book from the shelf, substantially as described.
7. A protecting device for books and the like, comprising channeled members adapted to be attached to'the edge of the book-cover, link connections provided upon the said channeled members and adapted to permit of the proper adjustment of the device and a flap or lip adjustably attached to the said members, substantially as described.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 5th day of December, A. D. 1903.
