To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, VVILLIAM A. E. NOBLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Case for Disk Records, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a case for holding disk records of the type used on phonographs, and is made in compact form designed to accommodate a great number of records, each record having a separate compartment into which the record may be readily placed and from which the record may be removed in a simple manner, and

one of the main objects of my invention is to produce a case of the character descrlbed so constructed that the disks may be readily handled without danger of injury to the records.

Referring to the drawings, which are for illustrative purposes only :-Figure 1 is a vertical, sectional view taken through a case embodying a form of my invention. The case comprises a cabinet or supporting member 1 mounted on feet 2 and in the form shown having a bottom 3, top 4, side walls 5 and a back (3. The front of the cabinet or case 1 is closed by means of doors 7 mounted on hinges 8 secured to the sides 5 of the case. The case is provided with a series of shelves 10 which may be of either wood or sheet metal which extend across the interior of the case between the side walls 5 and from the rear wall 6 of the case to a point adjacent the front edge thereof. The shelves 10 are arranged diagonally within the case, the rear edge 11 of each shelf being higher than the front edge of the shelf, the angle of the shelf being such that a phonograph disk record placed thereon would slide to the front of the shelf. The front edge of each shelf 10 is provided with a strip 1 1 secured thereto in such a manner as to form a ledge or stop projecting above the upper face of the respective shelves. should be made so that the operation of either placing a disk upon the shelf or removing the same therefrom may be accomplished without injury to the disk. It is also desirable to employ means whereby a disk when placed upon the shelf may be readily removed therefrom, particularly in view of the fact that the shelves are arranged close together so that there is not enough room between the shelves for the purpose of inserting the hand between the shelves to grasp the disk. With these particular ends in view, I employ a piece of felt or other fabric 15 of soft nature, and in my preferred form, as shown in Figs. 1 to 5 of the drawing, 1 place the felt so as to cover the entire upper face of the shelf, securing the felt to the shelf by gluing the same thereto. Adjacent the front edge of the felt I cut the felt, as indicated at 16, on two parallel lines inwardly from the front edge thereof which forms a flexible member or tab 17. The felt at each side of the cuts 16 is passed around the ledge 14 of the shelf 10 and the edge 18 of the felt is secured by means of glue or othersuitable material to the under edge of the shelf, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5. The tab 17 is adapted to extend over the ledge 1% on the shelf and hang downwardly therefrom as indicated in Fig. 1. The lower edge 19 of the tab may be stitched around bar 20 of metal or other material for the purpose of weighting the end of the tab 17 and keeping the same from curling and also to provide stiffening means which may be grasped by the hand for the purposes hereinafter described.

The felt when applied to the shelf, as just described, provides a flat supporting means for the disk record of soft texture which. will not injure the record on the disk, and the ends 18 of the felt being passed under the edge of the shelf provide a protection against the face of the disk placed upon the next lower shelf coming in contact with the shelf when placing a disk upon the shelf or removing the same therefrom.

In the form shown in Fig. 6, the body of the shelf 10 is not covered with felt, simply a small piece 21 of felt being used, the upper end of which is passed down through a slot 22 formed in the shelf, thence upwardly through a slot 23,the end 24 then being sewed to the strip of felt 21. The lower end 25 of the felt 21 in this form extends over the ledge of theshelf in the same manner as that heretofore described in to 5. V It is understood that my invention is not limited to the particular means described for securing the respective shelves, but any form of fastening means may be employed.

A case for disk records comprising a supporting member, a series of sloping shelves fixed in said member, a ledge integral with and upon the upper surface of the forward edge of each of said shelves, a flexible member secured to the upper surface of each of said shelves and forming a covering for the upper surface of the edge and a portion of the bottom surface of said shelf, and a tab formed in said flexible member and extending over the edge of the shelf for the purpose of raising the edge of the record above said ledge.

A case for disk records comprising a supporting member, a series of sloping shelves fixed in said member, a ledge on the edge of each of said shelves, a flexible member composed of a soft fabric secured to the upper surface of each of said shelves and forming a covering for the upper surface of the edge and a portion of the bottom surface of said shelf, and a tab formed in said flexible member and extending over the edge of the shelf for the purpose of raising the edge of the record above said ledge.
