LABEL-HOLDER FOR PIGEON-HOLES, 800.

Be it known that I, EMIL CHARLES ADOLPH WOLTMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented sible.

My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a pigeon-hole (with the lower portion broken away) with the label-holder attached; Fig. 2,a perspective view of the holder with the label-plate extended; Fig. 3,a perspective view of the holder with the label-plate pushed in, and Fig. 4 a plan view of the front extremity of the outer casing.

Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

In the various views, A represents the outer casing or body of the holder, which is made of tin or any other convenient material in any convenient manner, and is provided with the bent flanges a a at either side, of height sufficient to enable the plate to which the labelholding device proper or label-plate is attached to slide easily in and out. The bent portion of the flange is provided with any convenient number of openings, by means of which the holder is screwed or nailed to the inner face of the upper wall of the pigeon-hole, box, 850., to which it is to be attached. The vertical portions of the flanges a a are provided at their inner extremities with the longitudinal slots 8 s, in which the shoulders s 8', formed upon the sliding piece, can move backward and forward.

thin and of such dimensions that it will slide easily between the flanges a a in the casing A. This sliding piece is provided at its inner extremity with the shoulders s .9, formed on it or attached to it in any convenient manner,which extend through the slots 8 s in the flanges a a and prevent the plate A from sliding a distance greater than the length of the slots. The outer extremity of the sliding piece A is provided with a hinge, h, to which is attached the label plate or holder proper, B, which is made of metal or wood, &c., and is provided with the turned-up flanges or edges 1) b, or other similar flanges for holding the label in position.

The body of the holder or casing A is cut away at its outer extremity in the form of a semicircle, C, so as to enable the plateB to be grasped between the thumb and fingers and pushed into or pulled out of the casing A.

The casing A of the holder is attached to the inner face of the upper wall of the pigeonhole, box, 850., which is to be labeled by means of screws or, tacks 0 0 passing through the openings 0 0, or in any other convenient manner, so that the front face of the plate A shall be 011 a line with the front edge of the upper wall, as shown in Fig. 1.

hen the holder is ready for use, the sliding piece A is drawn out by grasping the labelplate 13 by the fingers and allowing it to drop on the hinge h and hang over the forward edge of the plate A, as shown in Fig. 2. The slots 8 8 should be, preferably, as long as the label-plate B is high, so that when the same is displayed the hinge on the forward end of the sliding piece A may not extend beyond the front edge of the casing A.

A label, of card-board, paper, (be, may be inserted in the hanging plate B, containing any desired indorsement, in the manner shown in Fig. 1. Labelsso inserted may be removed or replaced at pleasure without the use of tacks or mucilage. \Vhen the pigeon-hole or other receptacle is to be closed, the plate B is raised, and is pushed, with the sliding piece A, back into the space formed within the casing, so that it shall assume the position shown in Fig. 3, and thus be protected from the dust and kept from becoming bent or broken.

It is obvious from the foregoing that the intoo vention may be of any convenientsize, and may be fitted to all sizes of pigeon-holes or boxes without reference to the same being of thick or thin material; also, that the holder may be modified by dispensing with the casing A and providing simple runners on the upper surface of the pigeon-hole, in which the sliding piece A can slide; but the construction above described will be found to be most economical and convenient. The holder may be attached, say, to a paper-case containing pigeon-holes made of such thin materialthat it is impossible to fasten labels upon the faces of the dividing-partitions. By providing each pig eon-hole with this form of labetholder it is possible not merely to label each clearly, distinctly, and permanently, but also to change, rearrange, and modify the system of labels in the shortest possible time, and without injury to the partition-walls, as the labels are merely slipped in and out, and it is not necessary to use mucilage or tacks for attaching them. Moreover, the appearance of the case is not marred by the relabeling, as is invariably the case where this is attempted with the ordinary method of labeling. By sliding the holder back into the casing after using the pigeon-hole, the labels are protected from dust and space in the boX or pigeon-hole is economized, By making the holder of japanned tin great economy in cost of construction is made possible, and very little space is occupied in the interior of the pigeon-hole.

I claim as my invention- 1. Inna label-holder for pigeon holes and similar devices, the combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of aplate arranged to slide upon the upper wall of the same, means for holding the same in position, substantially as described, and a plate, to which a label may be attached, hinged to the outer end of said plate, arranged to slide on the surface of the pigeon -hole with the sliding plate, substantially as described.

2. In a label-holder for pigeon -holes, the combination, substantially as hereinbeforeset forth, of a plate arranged to slide in and out upon the upper wall of the pigeon-hole, means, substantially as described, for holding the same and allowing the same to be moved in and out upon the said upper wall, a plate of the same width hinged to its outer extremity for holding said label and arranged to slide in and out with said first plate, and flanges upon said label-plate to receive and hold a label.

8. In a label holder for pigeon holes and similar devices, the combination, with the up per inner surface of the same, of the casing A, with the flanges a a, and means, substantially as described, for attaching it to said upper surface, the sliding piece A, with shoulders s s", sliding in the slots 8 s in said flanges, and the label-plate B, provided with the flanges Z) I), for receiving and holding the label, hinged to and sliding with the sliding piece, and the cut 0 in the front face of the casing, for the purposes set forth.
