PATENT ()FFICE.

EDUCATIONAL APPLlANCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 589,180, dated August 31, 1897'.
Application filed November 19,1896. $erial No. 612,751. (No model.)
T 0 all whom it nm/y/ come/47 71,:
- Be it known that I, Jnssn M. LAMB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dalton, in the county of lVayne and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Educational Appliances; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in educational appliances, having for its objects, among others, to provide a simple, cheap, compact arrangement of parts adapted primarily for kindergarten use, which shall be a material aid in the instruction of smaller children. It may be termed a compound chart designed for elementary instruction in reading, spelling, numbers, and music for the first years work in school, and also more advanced instruction. It is constructed with a view to furnishing the teacher with all the needed materials for all work in the first and later years, and also to simplify the arrangement so as to facilitate the work of the teacher as well as to aid the pupil.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved chart. Fig. 2 is a view showing the hinged part open. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the same from front to rear. Fig. 4 is a vertical section, on an enlarged scale, through the hinged part. Fig. 5 is a detail of one of the slides.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a suitable base or support or feet upon which the chart is designed to be supported. From this rises the frame B, which may be of any desired height, and to the lower front face of which is secured the box C, having a door or lid D hinged at the front thereof and adapted to open preferably downward and to be held in a closed posit-ion by any suitable means. This box or receptacle is subdivided so as to provide a plurality of compartments E, in which may be held the removable slides, which will be hereinafter described.
\Vithin the frame B may be held a blackboard or slate or other suitable device, upon which may be written or printed or otherwise affixed any desired charactersf Across the front face of this frame and secured in any suitable manner to the vertical portions thereof are the cords or wires G, upon which may be strun the beads or other devices II, readily movable thereon, these beads being placed upon one or more of the wires, as may be desired, while upon the others are designed to be detachably affixed the slides I, formed of sheet metal or other suitable material bent upon itself to form the bend i and the short depending portion 1, by means of which they may be hung upon the wires. Upon the front faces of these there may be painted, printed, or otherwise affixed numbers, letters, words, pictures, and musical characters and terms, as may be desired. hen not in use, these slides are designed to be contained within the receptacles E of the box 0.
At the upper edge of the frame 13 there is a longitudinal slit J, in which is held by a wire or any other convenient means one or more sheets or leaves K, subdivided, as shown, and upon which may be printed or otherwise placed letters, words, sentences, or other desired objects or characters. There may be any desired number of these sheets or leaves, and each is designed to be folded over independent of the other, and by preference they have the characters upon each side thereof, so that either side may be exposed to view, the one upon the one side of the frame and the other upon the other.
L is a frame hinged at one vertical edge to the vertical portion of the frame B by double hinges, so thatit may be swung around against either face of said frame B, as may be required. This frame is provided with a plurality of transverse bars M, grooved upon their opposite edges, and in the guides formed by these grooves are mounted to slide the blocks N, which may be plain or which may have thereupon numbers, letters, or other required characters, there being two or more of these blocks arranged between each two transverse strips and each movable in their guides independent of the others. Any suitable means may be provided for holding this hinged frame in its open or closed position. When closed, the blocks may be moved so as to disclose one or more at a time the letters, Words, or characters upon the sheet, which is in operative position on the frame B back of the hinged frame.
The advantages of a chart or educational appliance constructed in accordance with the invention as above set forth will be readily appreciated, and the simplicity of the device will recommend its adoption.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. An educational device comprising a support, a frame thereon, a frame hinged to one end of the fixed frame and having movable blocks, and leaves held at one end in a groove at the upper edge of the movable frame, substantially as described.
2. An educational device comprising a support, a frame thereon, a frame hinged to one end of the fixed frame and having movable blocks, and leaves held at one end in a groove at the upper edge of the movable frame, and a receptacle supported upon the lower end of the stationary frame, substantially as described.
3. The educational appliance described,
comprising a support, a frame thereon, wires extending across the frame, slides detaehably mounted upon said wires, leaves held at one end in grooves at the upper end of said frames, a subdivided receptacle having a hinged cover, and a frame hinged at one edge to one edge of the stationary frame and having transverse strips with guide-grooves and blocks mounted to slide in said grooves, substantially as described. In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
