T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE F. BROWN, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, resident of Galt, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have made a certain new and useful invention in Copy-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as it appertains to make and use the invention,

reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The invention has relation to work or copy holders and is designed mainly to facilitate the copying of entries noted in the cash book to the ledger, avoiding much walking and labor ordinarily required in transferring these entries, the books being of large size and taking up a great deal of room when opened on the desk.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention,the numeral 1, designates an upright frame intended to rest upon the desk to support the cash book in upright position and preferably of open front box form, the cash book resting upon the upper or false bottom 2, of said frame and against a back or pressure plate 3, the sides 4, and the top 5, of the frame inclosing the sides and top of the book.

The back or pressure plate is spring pressed forwardly by means usually of coiled springs 3, upon rods 6, connecting the marginal inward extending wall 7 at the front of the sides of the frame with the back 8 of the frame, said pressure plate having perforations 9 engaging said rods so that the plate is movable back and forth upon the rods.

A horizontal shaft 10, is rotatably mounted at 11, in the lower portion of the frame between the upper and lower bottoms thereof, said shaft carrying pulleys 12, 12, one at each side, and a central ratchet wheel 13. Above this shaft is provided a depressible horizontal bar or lever ll having rearward projecting angle form carrying arms 15, located mainly in the space 16, between the upper and lower bottoms, said arms being pivoted at their lower ends at 17, near the back of the frame, the pivot shaft 17, carry series of pawls of graduated length, all of the, pawls having engagement with the ratchet in succession so that the greater the. distance the bar 14 is depressed, the more of .said pawls are brought into action, and the farther the ratchet wheel and shaft are thrown.

Upper pulleys 20, 20 are rotatably mounted at 21, within the marginal downward extending portions 22 of the top of the frame, and in vertical alinement with the lower pulleys, belt connections 23, being provided for the pulleys.

A horizontal guide or alinement spacing bar is carried by the front stretches of the two'belts, and when the lever is operated and the shaft turned as before. stated, the belts will be moved to move the guide bar downwardly one space or line of the cash book, the lever being returned to normal raised position by spring means 24, acting to rock the shaft 17 to normal position. Upon repeated operation of the spacing lever, the guide bar will be moved downwardly along the face of the cash book in a step by step manner. A stop 25 is provided to limit the rocking movement of the shaft 17 and the depression of the lever, consisting preferably of a threaded bar having a bearing in the frame at 26, and having contact at its inner end with a second crank arm 27 upon the shaft 17.

The cash book is of such size as compared to the open front of the frame to be entirely exposed so that the entries may be easily read,'the operative mechanism being located entirely below the book and the belts beyond the side edges of the book. The book is pressed for wardly by the spring or pressure plate and the forward movement is stopped by the spacing or guide bar which extends back of and within the marginal inward extending front portions of the frame having limiting contact therewith in its movement along the face of the book. Anti-friction rollers 29 may be used upon the guide bar forcontact with said portions of the frame.

What I claim is V 1. In a copy holder, an upright box-form open-front frame, including a spring pressed member at the rear of the frame and marginal inward extensions at the front, a horizontal shaft rotatably mounted at the lower part of said frame, a pulley at each side of said shaft, pulleys rotatably mounted at the upper portion of said frame and having belt connections with the lower pulleys, a guide bar carried by the belts and having sliding contact with said marginal inward extensions to limit the forward movement of said spring pressed member, a depressible lever mounted upon said frame and having a ratchet and pawl connection with said shaft, and means for returning said lever to normal position after operation.

In a copy holder, an upright box-form open-front frame, including a spring pressed memberat the rear and marginal inward extensions at the front, a false bottom designed to serve as a support for the copy, a bottom separated from the false bottom by an interval, a horizontal shaft rotatably mounted in said interval, a pulley at each side of said shaft, pulleys rotatably mounted at the upper portion of said frame and having belt connections with the lower pulleys, a guide bar carried by the belts and having sliding contact with said marginal inward extensions to limit the forward movement of said spring pressed member, a depressiblc lever mounted upon said frame and having a ratchet and pawl connection with said shaft, and means for retuming said lever to normal position after operation.
