COMBINED ARM-REST AND BOOK-LEVELER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,979, dated March 15, 1881. Application filed April 10, 1880. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OSCAR SMITH, of Savannah, in the county of Andrew and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Arm-Rests and Book- Levelers 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side elevation of my arm-rest and leveler. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view, and Fig. 4 is a plan with the rest D removed.

The object of this invention is to providea support for the armof a person while engaged in writing in large books, and to level the thinner side of the open book also, to afford a rest for the arm across both pages of the book.

A designates a base-board, to which are pivoted, as at a, the lower ends of the four hinges B B, the upper ends of these hinges being pivoted, by pivots G, to a top board, D. This top board or rest, D, is connected with asliding rectangular frame, E, by pivoted links F F. The side bars of this sliding frame move under the guide-bars G, which are secured to the base-board A.

Across-bar, H, is hinged to the side bars, h, of the sliding metal frame, and a bent rod, I, is journaled in said base-board in suchmanner that when it is turned in one direction it will raise the cross-bar H, and when it is turned in the reverse direction it will admit of the crossbar H being depressed by springs K, secured to the side bars of the sliding frame E. Rackbars L are secured to the base-board, and the cross-bar H is bent so that when it is depressed by the spring it will engage with the rack-bars, and thereby hold the frame stationary.

The book-leveler M consists of a jointed wire frame hinged to the front end of the base-board A. A bail, m, of this frame rests in aseries of notches, N, whereby the frame may be raised or lowered to suit the thickness of the book. The wire M has angular bends. made therein to correspond with the inclinations O of the base-board A, and a groove, 10, in the face of the baseboard receives the central portion of the wire M when the latter is folded down. The wire M is pivoted in notches Q in the edges of the base-board A. Notches R are provided for the link-connections between the wires M and m, and the edges S of the point T of the base-board are rabbeted to receive the wire m, which is bent to conform to the shape of the point T, so that when the wires M and m are folded down they will be out of the way and the point or projecting portion of the baseboard may be pushed under the book.

In writing upon the thicker side of the book the wires M and m are folded down, as above, and the projecting portion ofthe base-board pushed under the book. The arIn-restD should be adjusted to the appropriate height. When writing on the thinner side of the book, or the side which droops, the wires M and we should be elevated to level that side when placed under it.

When writing across both pages of the book the arm-rest and the leveler should be adjusted to the same plane and the device placed upside down at the foot of the book, the base-board A then forming the arm-rest.

What I claim is- 1. In combination, the arm-rest D, sliding frame E, pivoted links B and F, cross-bar H, rack-bars L, bent rod I, and base-board A, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The herein-described arm-rest and bookleveler, consisting of the arm-rest D, constructed as described,in combination with the baseboard A, inclined and notched at O, Q, and R, and having the grooved and notched point T N p, and the pivoted and linked angular wires M m, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
