Description
UNITED STATES ALFRED CURETON PERRY,
PATENT OFEIcE.
OF COVINGTON, GEORGIA.
HAND AND ARM REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,326, dated September 15, 1885.
Application filed June 8, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED G. PERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Govington, in the county of Newton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand and Arm Rests, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a hand and arm rest designed to be used to bring the hand and arm on a level with the page of a book upon which one is writing, the object being to provide a device of this character which may be vertically adjusted to adapt it for use with books of different sizes or of different thickness, and, further, to provide a device of this character which will afford a firm and steady support for the hand in writing.
WVith these ends in View the invention consists in the peculiar construction, combination, and arrangement of the various parts for service, substantially as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section, and Fig. 4 is a view showing the device folded.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents a strip or plate, which is designed to fit under a book, and on the outer end of said strip or plate A is attached a box or casing, B, adapted to contain the mechanism forraising and lowering the hand and arm rest and adapted to serve in connection with the hand-rest, as a box for the mechanism, and hide the same from view when the device is not in use.
In the lower front side of the box or casing B and on the under front side of the hand and arm rest 0 are provided brackets D, having longitudinal slots E.
F F represent lazy-tongs, which are arranged to connect the box or casing B and the arm-rest O. The lazy-tongs F F are connected with the front ends of the box or casing and the hand and arm rest 0 by rods G, which work in the longitudinal slots in the brackets D, while the upper and lower rear ends of the lazy-tongs are connected with the box B and hand-rest G by rods H, which engage openings in plates I, having their ends turned at right angles to their body portions.
The lazy-tongs are connected at their front and rear sides by rods J, the ends of which are reduced and form bearings for the central leversof the tongs and pivotally connect them together. The forward of the bars J is provided with an opening, a, in which is mounted to turn loosely a feed-screw, K, the threaded end of which works in the rear bar J. The feed-screw is held against forward or retrograde movement by shoulders on said feedscrew, as is clearly shown. It will be seen that by turning this set-screw the lazy-tongs may be raised or lowered to raise or lower the hand-rest, as may be desired. The lazytongs, when lowered, fit neatly within the box or casing B, and the hand-rest 0 serves as a cover, the end of the thumb-screw projecting through recesses, so that it may be operated when the hand-rest is raised or lowered.
In order to define the nature and scope of the present invention I would state that heretofore it has been proposed to employ a vertically-adj ustable arm-rest arranged on a strip and held in position by means of connectinglinks, one of which has an extension which engages a rack-bar, also that a pair of pivoted legs have been pivoted to an arm-rest and connected together by a screw adapted to hold the same in any desired elevation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In an arm-rest, the combination, with a strip, A, of a case, B, secured thereon, lazytongs arranged in said 0 use at each end thereof, an arm or hand rest, 0, secured to said lazy-tongs and adapted to rest on the case B to form a cover thereto when the tongs are closed, and cross-bars carrying a feed-screw adapted to lock the tongs together, substantially as described.
2. In an arm-rest, the combination, with a strip, A, carrying a case, a vertically-adjustable arm-rest, lazy-tongs arranged at each end of said case, brackets secured in said case, rods G H, connecting the set of tongs at each side together at their upper and lower ends, transverse bars J, connecting each set of tongs and a hand-rest supported upon the upper ends of the lazy-tongs and adapted, when the same are lowered, to serve as a cover for box [5 B, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED CURETON PERRY.
