FOLDING IBONING-BOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 27, 1920.
Application filed March 22, 1916, Serial No. 85,891. Renewed September 29, 1919. Serial No. 327,154.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLIS L. TERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Folding Ironing-Board, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in ironing boards, the primary object of the invention being the provision of a foldable device which may be collapsed into a very compact form for the purpose of storing when not in use, and which, when open, may be adjusted to difierent heights for the convenience of the operator, or for various purposes.
A further object of the invention is to construct a folding ironing board which may be readily converted into a table.
A further object of the invention is to combine with an ironing board, a suitable support for the work or articles wlnch overlap the width of the ironing board, and thereby protect them from contact with the floor.
"With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment thereof, may be made within the scope of the claims.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a perspec tive view of the ironing board in open or set up position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the ironing board folded or collapsed, a portion of the cover being broken away and disclosing the removable top in section. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the ironing board collapsed and reversed in position. Fig. 4 is a modified form of the ironing board in the open position. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the form shown in Fig. 4, the device being shown in collapsed position.
Referring to the drawings, the top 1 is formed for use as an ironing board, and is detachable from the adjustable support formed by the side rails 2, 3, the transverse bars 4, 5, 6, the primary supporting legs 7, 8, the swing braces 9, the longitudinal brace 10, and the supplementary legs 11. The hinged leaf 12 forms a supplementary top when in the open position.
Legs 7, 8, are connected by the braces 13, 14, and, through the hinges 15, form a swing connection with transverse bar 4, of the supporting frame. The supplen'ientary legs 11 are connected by pivots 16, with legs 7, 8. The angle of divergence of legs 7, 8, and of supplementary legs 11, and hence the height of the top 1, is determined by the brace 10 which is pivoted to legs 7, 8, and provided with a series of notches 17 by which said brace has engagement with the cross-bar 18 connecting the supplementary legs 11. The height of the opposite end of the top is determined by the swing braces 9, which are hinged to bar 6, and provided with a transverse connecting-bar 19, adapted to engage with the notches 20, in legs 7, 8.
The top 1 is provided on the underside, with a double hook 21, which, in the position shown in the drawings, engages with the bar 4, but the pointed end 22, of the top 1, may be extended and will then be supported by Elie engagement of the hook 21, with the In the set up position, the supplementary top 12 is supported by the auxiliary leg 23, constructed with the fixed member 24 and the sliding member 25, which is clamped in position by the screw-clamp 26, in accordance with the height of the top. A swing brace member 27, hinged to leg 8, is secured to leg 23, by the clamp 26. The leg 23 is hinged to a slide bar 28, which extends beneath the top 1 and through the side rail 3. The leg 23 is therefore foldable in the collapsed position, upon and against the side rail 3. In the extended or set-up position of the device the slide bar 28 is supported by the member 29 on the opposite end thereof, the said member 29 having enga-gement with the bars 5. In the set up position the hook 30 engages with the loop 31. A flexible connection 32 limits the downward swing of legs 7, 8, being connected to bar 6, of the supporting frame, and brace 14, of the swing legs.
To fold the ironing board into collapsed position, the supplementary top 12 is folded over upon top 1, the swing braces 9 then folded beneath and against brace bar 5, the legs 7, 8, then folded against and between side rails 2, 3, the brace 10 then swung between legs 7, 8, and then the supplementary legs 11, folded against the legs 7, 8. The auxiliary leg 23 is then folded against side rail 3, as shown in Fig. 3.
From the foregoing it may be seen that the nearer the legs 7, 8, and swing braces 9, and supplementary legs 11, approach the perpendicular, the greater will be the height of the top 1 from the floor, and in setting the device up, the height may be varied to accommodate the operator, and further, the device may be collapsed into a very compact form.
In the modified form shown in Figs. 4, 5, the top 41 is detachable from the frame formed by the side rails 42, the transverse bars 43, 44, connecting the side rails, the primary supporting legs 45, the swing braces 47, and the longitudinal brace 48. The top 41 is reversible, one side comprising an ironing board, and the opposite side, when uppermost, forming with the foldable leaves 49, a table top, the top fitting between the leaves 49, and resting upon the bars 48, 44-.
Legs 45 are connected by pivots 50, to side rails 42, and supplementary legs 46, by pivots 51, to legs 45, the angle of divergence of legs 45, 46, being determined by brace 48, which is pivoted to legs 45, and provided with notches 52, engaging with crossbar 54, connecting the legs 46. Braces 47, hinged to bar 44, are connected by cross-bar 55, adapted to engage with notches 56, in legs 45. The angle of divergence of legs 45, 46, and of braces 47 relative to legs 45, determines the height of the top from or relative to the floor.
From the foregoing it may be seen that the device as shown in Figs. 4, 5, may be set up, folded, collapsed, and adjusted to the needs of the operator, similar to the device shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3. To fold to collapsed position the top is detached and the leaves folded upon the supporting frame.
While the device is fundamentally, an ironing board, by reversing the top, it is convertible into a table adapted for use for various analogous purposes and in various analogous ways, the essence of my invention comprising an ironing board in combination with a collapsible standard therefor, which may be folded into a limited space, and which may be set up in various heights for the convenience of the operator.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a frame adapted to support an ironing board top, of a slide bar laterally extensible from the frame, pivoted legs and braces supporting the frame in the set up position, said legs and braces being variable in inclination to vary the height 01' the frame, an adjustable supplementary leg to support the extended slide bar, a swing brace connecting the pivoted legs and supplementary leg, and clamp means for securing the swing brace in various positions.
2. The combination with a frame, of a bar slidable therein, of collapsible supporting means for the frame, a telescoping support for the slidable bar, and an adjustable swing brace connecting the collapsible support and the telescoping support.
3. 'i he combination with a top SUPPOFtlHg frame, of a slidable supporting bar extensible therefrom, an articulate frame for the top supporting frame, means for varying the adjustment of the articulate frame, and a support for the slidable bar, adjustable in accordance with the articulate frame.
4. A collapsible support having side rails and cross-bars maintaining the side rails in opposed relation, primary swing legs hinged to one of said cross-bars, supplementary legs pivoted to the primary legs, a cross-bar connecting the supplementary legs, a notched brace engaging with the last-named crossbar and having pivot connection with the primary legs, and hinged braces supporting the opposite end of the side rails, said braces engaging with corresponding notches in the .primary legs where-by the side rails are maintained in a level position, a slidable bar transversely extensible from and sliding through the side rails, an auxiliary leg to support the slidable bar in extended position, means for varying the height of the auxiliary leg in accordance with the position of the supplementary legs, and adjustable connecting means between the supplementary legs and the auxiliary leg.
In testimony whereof I hereunto alfix my signature this 16th day of March, 1916.
ELLIS L. TERRY. In the presence of F. M. KEENEY, LEE EICHOLTZ.
