IRONING-BOARD AND STAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 30, 1913.
Application filed April 18, 1913. Serial No. 762,064.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW G. L. SoHwARTz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of AL legheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Boards and Stands, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved ironing board and stand therefor, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character which admits of the ironing board being vertically adjusted to suit the convenience of the person using the same and which also enables the board to be arranged out of the way and the stand to be folded when not in use, and which provides also a sleeve board which may be used in connection with the stand after the ironing board has been detached therefrom, so that the ironing board and sleeve board may be used interchangeably, the invention consisting in the construct-ion, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed. 1 i
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of an ironing board and stand therefor constructed in accordance withv my invention and set up ready for use. Fig. 2 same on the of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, showing the board and the stand in folded position as when not in use. Fig. 4 is a horizontal'sectional View of the same on the plane indicated by the line 6-?) of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view ofthe sleeve board which may be used interchangeably with the ironing board in connection with the stand.
In accordance with my invention, I provide a stand 1 which comprises a standard 2 and a base 3 at the lower end of the standaid. The base is constructed with a main member 4 on which the lower end of the standard directly bears and with a foldable brace member 5 which is connected to one end of the member 4 by means of a hinge 6 which isarranged on the lower sides of said main and brace members and adapts the latter to be folded under the former. The main and brace members of the base are provided, respectively, with transverse cleats 78 on "their lower sides, as shown. Brace brackets 10 are also preferably employed in the angles between the sides of the standard and is a vertical sectional view of the plane indicated by the linen-a of the standard the main member 4 of the base. A larger bracket 11 is provided at one side of the standard and secured on the member 4 of the base and a brace bracket 12 is also provided which is arranged on the opposite side of the standard from the bracket 11 and is so long as to extend partly over the brace member 5 of the base when the latter is in set up position, as shown in Fig. 1.
In the upper portion of the standard is a vertical slot 13 the width of which is coextensive with that of the standard so that the said slotis open at opposite sides of the standard, as well as at its upper end. The sides of the standard, on opposite sides of the slot are provided with alining pairs of openings 14 and also with alining openings 15 below the openings 14. To hold the base in extended position, I provide a hook rod 16 which is pivotally connected to the standard as at 17 and may be engaged with a keeper or staple 18 in the upper side of the brace member 5 of the base. The said brace member also has a keeper staple 19 at its outer end which, when said brace member is folded under the member 4 of the base may be engaged by a hook 20 which is arranged at one end of the base member 4 and is pivotally connected as at 21 thereto. The ironing board 22 which is for use in connection with the stand is provided on its under side with a medially and longitudinally arranged arm or web 23 which is adapted to fit in the slot 13 of the standard and is provided with a series of adjusting openings 24, any pair of which may be ar ranged in line'with the pairs of openings 14 and a series of adjusting openings 25 any one of which may be arranged in line with the openings 15 of the standard.
Securing pins 26-27 may be respectively inserted in the openings 14-24 and 1525 to secure the ironing board on the standard at any desired vertical adjustment. By first removing the pins the board may be entirely detached from the standard. After the base of the standard has been folded the ironing board may be arranged in a vertical position, parallel with the standard, and with its openings 25 in alinement with the openings 14 of the standard so that when the pins are inserted in the said alining openings, the board will be secured in said vertical position to the standard, thus enabling the entire device to be folded and arranged compactly being provided near its broader end with a,
medially arranged web or arm 29 which corresponds with the arm 23 of the ironing board and has adjusting openings 30-31 to correspond with the openings 1415 of the standard and admit of the insertion of the securing pins to hold the sleeve board at any desired vertical adjustment on the standard;
It will be understood from the foregoing specification and with reference to the drawings that my improved ironing board, sleeve board and stand are exceedingly cheap and simple, admit of the use of either the sleeve board or the ironing board at will inrconnection with the stand and admit of the compact disposition of all the partsso that the. device may be readily moved out of the way and caused to take up but little room when not in use.
I claim 2- 1. A stand comprising a foldable base and a standard rising from the foldable base and having a vertical slot in its upper portion open at its upper end and alsoopen atopposite sides of the standard, in combination with an ironing-board having a web on its under side arranged to be fitted and adjusted vertically in the slot of the standard, said standard and said 'web having adjusting openings, and pins for insertion in said openings to secure the board to the standard at any desired vertical adjustment for use andto also secure the boardin a vertical po sition at one side of the'standard when not inuse.
2. In combination With an ironing board having a vertical web or arm on its under side provided with adjusting openings, a standard having-a vertical slot in its upper portion open at its upper end and also open at opposite sides of the-standard, the standard also having adjusting openings, abase at the lower end of the standard comprising a main member and a brace member, the
latter hinged to one end of the main member and-adaptedto be folded under the same, a brace projecting from one side of the standard and beyond one end of the main member of the base to bear on the upper side of the brace member of the base when said brace member is-eX-tended, means to secure the brace member when in extended posit-ion, meansto secure the same when in folded position under themain member, and means for insertion in the adjusting openings of the web of the board and the standard to secure the board to the standard either inhorizontal or vertical position, and forvertical adjustment: with respect to the same.
