J. T. JENNINGS. IRONIING BOARD.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 28. 1903.
N0 MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented December 8, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
IR ONlNG-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,518, dated, De b 8, 1903.
Application filed February 28, 1903. Serial No. 145,573.. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN T. JENNINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at East St. Louis, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Boards and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in ironing-boards, and has for its object to hold the board rigid when in use and to readily admit an endless garment to be put on the bosom-board.
It consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims. I
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Figure l is an elevation of my improved ironing-board. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3 is a view showing the device when the base-board is adapted for use as an ironingsurface, and Fig. 4. is a section on the line 00 w of Fig. 1 looking at the base-board when the supports thereon are in position for use.
In carrying out my invention I provide a base-board 1, preferably having an extension 1, intended for use as an iron-holder. At one end of the base-board is pivoted an upright or support 2, having pivoted or hinged thereto at its upper end a bosom-board 3 which has its forward end adapted to bear upon a second upright or support 4, pivoted to the opposite end of the base-board. These pivoted uprights or supports are held in position, preferably, by means of hooks and eyes 5. The bosom-board is of less width than the base-board. V
To adapt the bottom of the base-board for use as an ironing-surface, I provide it at opposite sides with supports 6, which are pivoted thereto. When the bottom of the baseboard is to be used as an ironing-surface, the bosom-board and the base-board are folded together andithe supports 6 placed in an upright position to adapt them to rest upon the table orsupport for the device. Also pivoted to the base-board is a brace 7 to engage and hold the supports 6 in an upright position.
It is obvious that my invention provides an ironing-board of simple construction which maybe compactly folded and in which either the bosom-board or base-board may be used as an ironing-surface. When the base-board is being used as an ironing-surface, it will have a rigid support and will not wabble or rock, as it would if only the bosom-board were used as a support. Also by reason of the forward support being connected only to the base-board the bosom-board may be readily raised to permit an endless garment to be slipped thereon for convenience in ironing.
I do not wish to limit myself to details of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as herein shown and described, as I am aware that various changes may be made therein without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention and the same remain intact and be protected.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A reversible ironing board having a base-board, supports for said'base-board and a bosom-board connected to said base-board and adapted to fold between said supports.
2. A reversible ironingboard having a base-board, supports pivoted to said baseboard, and abosom-boar'd of less width than said base-board pivoted to one of said supports and adapted to rest upon the other, said base-board having other supports between which said bosom-board is adapted to fold, substantially as set forth.
3. A reversible, ironing -board having a base-board, supports pivoted to said baseboard, and a bosom-board of less width than said base-board, pivoted to one of said supports and adapted to rest upon the other, said base-board having hinged, so as to fold inwardly, other supports between which lastnamed supports, said bosom-board is adapted to fold, said base-board also having means for securing said last-named supports in an upright position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J. T. JENNINGS.
