To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. LLOYD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chillicothe, in the county of Ross and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Ironing-Tables, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and useful device for service around the household, the device being useful both as a step-ladder and as an ironing table. When used as the latter it is adapted to be attached to the end of the table on which it effects a gripping action which increases as the weight imposed upon the ironing board table is increased. lVhen used as the forn'ier, it is adapted to be set up like a step-ladder during the performance of which function the ironing board acts as a prop. A swinging plate, or shelf is attached to the device adjacent to the point of connection between the board and the ladder, and this plate may be swung out and supported in such position to act as a shelf when the device is used as a ladder, and when used as an ironing board or table, the plate may be laid down against the board to provide a support for an iron.

As shown and described, the specific embodiment of the invention is adhered to, but to this embodiment it is not to be restricted. Applicant reserves the rights to make such changes or illustrations as the actual reduction to practice may suggest, in so far as such changes or-illustrations are compatible in spirit with the annexed claim.

The same numerals of reference designate the same parts throughout the several fig ures of the drawings, herein:

Figure 1 is a perspective of the device used as a step-ladder.

Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional View of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a side elevational view showing the device used as an ironing table.

Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the device in folded position.

Referring to the drawings, the invention is shown as representing a ladder A, and an ironing board B, the ladder consisting of the upright members 1, and the steps 2. The board at its larger end is cut away to provide two projecting arms 3, on the bottom edges of which, and extending on to the adjacent under face of the board there are attached the bracing members, or plates The board where the two arms 3 are formed, straddles the ladder and is pivotally connected to the same by means of a pin 5, this pin passing through suitable holes formed in the plates 4, and through the legs 1 of the ladder. The board is thus permitted to swing up against the ladder or to have its lower end swing away from the lower end of the ladder.

The legs 1 on the front edge, are notched as indicated at (3, and when the lower end of the board is swung away from the lower end of the ladder, the arms 3 project beyond the notches 6, so that the notches may be made to engage the edge of the table top 7, and the arms 3 engage the lower face of such table top. When the device is in such position the lower or bottom ends of the legs rest upon the floor, and for this purpose the legs are beveled off as indicated at 8, so as to obtain a fairly large bearing surface upon the floor. It will be observed that the device in this position effects a clamping operation on the table top, which clamping is increased as the Weight upon the board 13 is increased.

As a means of supporting the outer or free end of the board when the device is used as an lronlng table, a suitable bracing medium is employed and this bracing medium consists of the bars 10 and 11, the former havlng their one end pivotally mounted on the ends of a rod 12, passed transversely through the two legs one directly below one of the steps 2. The remaining ends of the bars 10 pivotally connect with the bars 11 at one end of the latter, and a round 13 is provided to permit this pivotal connection, this round also connecting the two bars 10. The two bars 11 adjacent their lower ends, are inter-connected by a transversely disposed brace member 141- and the lower or free ends of these bars provide two of the feet of the device when used as a step-ladder.

Mounted on the under face of the board B there is a cleat 15 against one edge of which the round 13 bears, so that when the device is used as an ironing board, as shown in Fig. 3, the bars 10 may be permitted to support the outer end of the board.

When the device is used as a step-ladder, the supporting elements comprising the bars 10 and 11 are manipulated so as to bring the brace member 14 against. the cleat 15 at the opposite edge from that against which the round 13 bore, and a thumb-screw i6 is provided which may be screwed into the underface of the ironing board, when the brace 14 is in this position. This thumb-screw, as is shown, passes through the brace 1%.

In order that the brace and the thumbscrew may be relieved of lateral strains a pivotally monntech button 17 is carried by the board 13 on the rear face thereof, and this button may be turned to hook over the round 13, the button thereby serving to off:- set any tendency of the. board and ladder legs to. spring apart and the bars 12 and transverse brace member 14 serving to support the back of the ladder, and the weight imposed upon the same.

The step 2 adjacent to which the ironing board pivotally connects with the ladder, has hingedly attached thereto a plate 18 and when the device is used as a ladder this plate may be swung out to lie in the plane. of the step to which it is attached, in which position it is maintained by hook members 19 mounted on the legs 1 adjacent the top and having hooks formed at their free ends for engagement in suitable eyes mounted on the edges of the plate adjacent. its free end, Vhen the device is used, as. an. ironing table the plate may lie down on top. of the board B, a cleat 20serving the purposeto keep its, outer or free end space above the board. Using. the invention as a step-ladder the plate 1 8 may serve as a, supporting shelf for buckets or any other utensils or devices which it is necessary to have convenient. Using the invention as an ironing board, the plate serves as a, support. for irons, inasmuch, as it is covered on its upper surface with a metallic shield 21.

When not in use the device is adapted to be folded up, the bars 10 and 11 folding down against each other, the board B folding down against the brace member 14 and the plate 18 folding down against the board as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing.

From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawing, it is believed that a clear enough understanding of the invention is to be had to render further description unnecessary.
