UNITED sTATEs PATENT orricn.
EDGAR W. HEISER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FOLDING BENCH.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR W. Huisnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invent-ed certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Benches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in benches, and more particularly to a device of this character designed especially for pipe fitters, the object of the invent-ion being to provide a light handy portable bench which may be folded into a small compass for convenience in transportation.
A further object of my invention is to provide a secure and rigid means for holding the bench in the unfolded or operative position.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of' my improved bench in its preferred form, showing an auxiliary support in connection therewith; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation showing the bench in the folded position, Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the auxiliary support in the folded position, Fig. 4 is a front elevation, Fig. 5 is a side elevation, Fig. 6 is a top plan view, Figs. 7 and 8 are respectively front and side elevations showing the top portion of the auxiliary support, Fig. 9 is a top plan view of the auxiliary support showing its connection to a tube connecting said support with the bench proper, and Fig. 10 is a detail top plan view showing the hooked connection of said tube with the bench.
Referring now to the drawings 1 designates the bench which is a form of tripod, and 2 the auxiliary support, the tube 3 being pivoted to the latter and detachably secured to the bench. The auxiliary support 2 is used only when long tubes are being operated on, since the bench 1 is self-contained and may be readily secured to the floor by screws, the perforated feet 4 at the lower extremities of the legs 5 being provided for this purpose. Similar feet 6 are provided on the legs 7 of the auxiliary support 2.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. July 30, 1909.
Patented June 7, 1910. Serial No. 510,483.
A pipe fitters vise 8 is detachably secured to the top 9 of the bench 1 by means of the screws 10, and the legs 5 are pivoted to perforated lugs 11 depending from said top as shown in Fig. 2. Stops 12 in the legs 5 extend outwardly from the pivotal connections thereof, which stops are adapted to abut the lower side of the top 9 to hold said legs in proper position when unfolded. Each pivotal connection of a leg 5 with a lug 11 is formed by means of a screw 13, said lug being tapped to receive said screw. In this construction the screw 13 may be adjusted to give the pro-per degree of looseness to the pivot and be held in its adjusted position by means Vof a lock nut 14. Arms 15 supporting cups 15 provided to receive oil or grease cans are detachably secured to the top 9 by means of the thumb-screws 16, said cups being formed of sheet metal.
The legs 5 are provided with clasps 17 which surround the same and are secured thereto by means of the screws 18. To a clasp 17 a bar 19 is pivoted by means of the screw 20, the other end of said bar being perforated to receive a removable pin 21, the latter being adapted to pass through a perforation in the center of the bar 22 as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The bar 22 is pivoted to a clasp 17 by means of the screw 23, the same being adapted to swing into engagement with a clasp 17, as indicated, and to be secured thereto by means of the screw 24.
A hook 30 is formed on a leg 9 adjacent the pivotal connection thereof, and a perforation 31 in one end of the tube 3 is adapted to engage said hook as shown in Figs. 5 and 10. The other end of the tube 3 is pivoted to a U-shaped member 32 by means of a bolt 33, said member being secured to the legs 7 by means of a bolt 34 which forms a pivotal connection for said legs, the upper end of which are preferably formed as shown in Figs. 3 and 7.
In order that pipes may slide easily over the support 2 a roller 35 is provided, the same being rotatably mounted on the rod 36 which is pivoted to a leg 7 adjacent the upper end thereof. The rod 36 may swing as shown in Fig. 7 and be folded when not in use, a hook 37 being provided in one leg 7 to support one end of said rod when the roller is in the operative position.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to malte such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Iatent is:
l. In a device of the class described, the combination of a tripod having foldable legs; a pipe vise on said tripod; a supple mental support for a pipe, and a connection between said tripod and said support comprising a rod hinged to said support and detachably connected with said tripod, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a tripod having foldable legs; a pipe vise on said tripod; a supplemental support for a pipe comprising two pivoted legs having jaws adapted to receive a pipe; a connection between said tripod and said support comprising a rod hinged to said support and detachably connected with said tripod, substantially as described.
In a device of the class described, the
combination of a tripod having foldablev legs; a pipe vise on said tripod; a supplemental support for a pipe comprising` two pivoted legs having jaws adapted to receive a pipe, and a roller hinged to one jaw and detachably connected with the other; and a connection between said tripod and said support comprising a rod hinged to said support and detachably connected with said tripod, substantially as described.
t. A folding supplemental support for pipe vises, comprising two pivoted legs having jaws adapted to receive a pipe; and a roller hinged to one jaw and detachably connected with the other, substantially as described.
5. A folding supplemental support for pipe vises, comprising two pivoted legs hav ing jaws adapted to receive a pipe; a roller hinged to one jaw and detacliably connected with the other; and a connecting rod hinged to said supplemental support and adapted to be detachably connected with the main support of the vise, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDGAR IV. IIEISER.
