EMBALIVIING-BOARJ1 Specification of Letters Patent.
*atontdd Aug. 25. 1914.
Application filed May is, 1915:. Serial No. reams.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ldlLBltlI'NtE M. BnowN and linear E. Brown, citizens ot the United States, residing at Cedar Falls, in the county of Blaclthawk, State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Embalming-lioard, o'lt which the following is a specification.
The devlce forming the sub ect matter oi ,this application is an einbahnlng board, and
the. present invention aims to provide an em'bahning board which may be folded in "the board 7116311 one end section of the board folded within the intermediate section.
Another object of the invention is to pro-. vide an embalming board having a toldable? leg, of novel form, adapted to be positioned within the contour of the board when the same is in folded position.
It is vvithin the scope of the invention to improve generally and to enhance the utility oi devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description procoeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction herein after described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment oi invention herein disclosed can he made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 shows the board in folded condition; Fig. 2 shows the board set up; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sec tion of the board; Fig. 4i is a tragmental transverse section on the line of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a transverse section tln'ough one end of the board, the view depicting the means whereby the leg is pivotally supported and maintained; F 6 is a sectional detail illustrating the inside of the frame which is pivotally connected with one end oil the intermediate section of the board; Fig. 7 is a top plan of the structure shown in Fig. 6. y
In carrying out the invention there is 1310 vided a frame 1 including sides 2. The sides 2 of the frame 1 lie between the sides of an intermediate section t, the same comprising a top 5. Bearing plates 6 are applied. to
the ends of the sides 2 of the :lrauie 1., the bearing plates (5 receiving pivot bolts 7 which engage the sides 3 ol the intermediate section t, the construction being such that the frame .l. ma y be swung downwardly and then upwardly as indicated by an arrow in Fig. 3, to register within the contour of the intermediate section t. A reinforcing strip 8 secured to the under face of the top 5 of the intermediate section l, adjacentone end oilithe' intermediatesection. The reinforcing strip is lmund along its lower edge by a ribhon or bar or" metal, indicated at 9 the same being extended along the inner faces of the sides 3 .ot the intermediate section t, and beit extended across the lower edges ot the sic es 3.
The invention linrther includes a vertically movable head board 10 connected by inoai'is of hinges 11 with the intermediate section i. The ren'rhircing strip 8 above referred to, serves as a means for receiving the screws whereby the hinges 11 are secured to the intermediate section t, the top 5 of the intermediate section 4: preferably being tashioned from. thin veneer. One oil? the sides of the ii erinec a to section t isprovided with a handle 12.
The invention further includes an end section which is denoted by the numeral 14, the
i end section 1.4L comprising sidcslo and a top 16 The sides of theend section Ii-Clare connected with the sides 3 of the intermediate section at by means of hinges 1'7.
Guide plates 18 are secured to the sides of the end section 14;, the plates 18 being provided. with longitudinal slots 19. Legs 20 are shown. the same being n'ovided at their upper ends with headed, pivot pins '21 adapted to slide in the slots 19. Mounted in the legs 20 are latch pins 22, constrained by springs 23 to engage with suitable openings termed in the plates 18, to the end that the upper parts of the legs may be prevented from moving in the direction of the length of the board. Braces 2 .1; are pivoted at their lower ends as indicated at to the legs 20, the upper ends of the braces 24: being pivotally connected as indicated at 96 with the struction as above outlined is a duplicate of the leg construction hereinbefore described in detail in connection with the end section 14 of the board.
if desired, the upper edges of the plates 27 may be equipped with notches 83, although, if desired, the notches may be other wise located in the frame 1. Notches 33 are adapted to engage the lower ends of the dogs 3%, the upper ends of which are pivoted to the head board 10. By means of the dogs 3%, the head board may be maintained at any desired elevation.
In practical operation, by disengaging the latch pins 2-2 and 31, the legs 20 and 30 may be adjusted with the braces 24: and 32 as fulcrunis, the pivot pins 21 and 29 riding in the slots 19 and 28. Under such circumstances, the braces 24: and the legs 20 upon the one hand and the braces 32 and the legs 30 upon the other hand, will move into alinement as clearly shown in Fig. 6,tl1e legs and the braces being housed within the conteur of the end section it and within the centour of the frame 1, respectively. The end section It is then swung downwardly, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3 until the edges of the sides 15 of the end section 14; abut against the edges of the sides 3 of the intermediate section a. The head board 10 is then swung over in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 3, until the head board rests on top of the intermediate section 4, whereupon, the parts will be disposed in the folded condition shown in Fig. 1.
From the foregoing it is to be observed that there is shown in this application, an embalming board adapted .to be disposed in small compass the construction being such that the board may be set up readily for use and may be maintained in a rigid, corpse supporting condition.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is In a device of the class described, an in termediate frame comprising side walls and a top; a head frame including side walls pivoted to the side walls of the intermediate frame and lying between the side walls of the intermediate frame whereby the head frame may be folded within the contour of the intermediate frame, the intermediate frame being centrally open and unencumbered to receive the head frame; a foot frame comprising a top and side walls, the side walls of the foot frame being pivoted to the side walls of the intermediate frame and the foot frame being of the same length as the intermediate frame whereby the edges of the walls of the foot and the intermediate frames may be brought together to dispose the tops of the foot and intermediate frames upon opposite sides of the head frame thereby to define a compartment in which the head frame is completely housed; ahead board hinged to the intermediate frame and cooperating with the head frame and adapted to be folded over upon the top of the intermediate frame and movable legs upon the head and foot frame only, and adapted to be folded, respectively, within the contour of the head and foot frames.
In testimony that weclaim the-foregoing as our'own, we have hereto afiixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
