BOOK-MARKER.

To all whom it may-concern Be it known that I, HAL G. CHILD, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Markers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention pertains to book-markers and has for its object to provide a new and novel construction for systematically marking various passages in a book so that they may be readily referred to and found for oral or periodic reading. It is designed that such construction shall enable a person to mark not only the page but the line from and to which the passage referred to extends and indicate which page, right or left, the passage is on. These purposes are accomplished by the mechanism heremafter de scribed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,

The detail parts and their special applications will be now taken up and described.

A rigid back portion A carries a link B at each end to which links are loosely adjusted flat marginal frames C and the anchor rods D, forming a construction in the nature of a loose leaf book. To the top end of the leaves C and extending outwardly are slidably adjusted the section markers M. To the inner front edge of the marginal I frames G are slidably adjusted the line clips F and F. To the front edge of the marginal frames C are also adjusted and extending outwardly page tabs E.

The links B are composed of the parts B and B joined together on one side by the overlapping sleeve H, engaging the ends of each. A coil spring G encircles the end of the part B between the enlarged end J and the'collar I. The parts B and B are separable at L by pulling the part B outwardly thereby compressing the spring G. part B may be rotated sidewise and the marginal frames C and anchor rods D placed 1n thelr desired relative positions on the part B and then the part B rotated back to a position as shown in Fig. 3. The frames G- are marginal only and loosely adjusted to the links B at the ends C as shown. I

There is no back portion to the frames C and the ends C are curved outwardly for a distance as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. These features avoid filling and expanding the book at the back. The marker is adjusted to the book N as shown in Fig. 1 with the back portion A engaging the back of the book on the outside thereof, the links B extending over the ends of the book, the portions C reaching clear of the leaves thereof and the section markers M and reference tabs E extending outwardly beyond the leaves of the book. The line clips F and F are adjusted to the front portion of the marginal frames C at the inner edge thereof (Figs. 1 and 2) so as to clearly indicate the lines from and to which the reading extends. The front marginal portion of the marker may be provided with numerals P as shown in Fig. 2, the right distance apart to be in horizontal alinement with the lines of reading matter on the pages to assist in the adjustment of the line clips F and F There will be used as many marginal frames G as there are reading references for the occasion and the frames C will be adj usted in relative relation on the links B and in the book N so that the page tabs E will be on the marginal frames 0 at the proper place in the book to indicate the corresponding reading in the reference. The sectional markers M will be adjusted to the marginal frame C carrying the first reference of the section to which it refers. The clips F and F will indicate the lines from and to which the reference covers. In as much as the reference may be on the right or left hand page of the book, a star or other character may be shown on one side only of the marker and that adjusted to the marginal frame C to be in view when applied to the page indicated. The page tabs E are adjusted to the frames 0 as shown in Fig. 1, so that all are in plain view and number consecutively from the top of the book downwardly. The anchor rods D are placed underneath the covers of the book and serve to hold the device in place.

That I claim is,

1. A book marker comprising a rigid supporting frame, links at the ends ofsaid sup porting frame, fiat frames having a narrow portion parallel with said supporting frame and two narrow portions at substantially right angles therewith and loosely secured to said links, said portion arallel with said supporting frame beingadapted for lying on only the front margin, and said portions at substantially right angles with said rigid frame being adapted for lying on only the end margins of the leaf of a book.

2. A book marker comprising a rigid supporting frame, links at the ends of said supporting frame, fiat frames having a narrow portion parallel with said supporting frame and two narrow portions at substantially right angles-therewith and loosely secured to said links, said portion parallel with said supporting frame being adapted for lying on only the front margin and said portions at substantially right angles with said rigid frame being adapted for lying on only the end margins of the leaf of a book, said right angle portions being curved outwardly,

at their connection with saidlinks, so that the same .clear the. back of the book.

3. A book marker comprising a rigid supporting frame, links at the ends of said supporting frame, fiat frames having a narrow portion parallel with said supporting frame and two narrow portions at substantially right angles therewith and loosely secured to said links, said portion parallel with said,

supporting frame being adapted for lying on only the front margin and said portions.
