UNITED STATES PATENT ()rFIcE.
CHRISTIAN JAEGER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ALBUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,410, dated July 15, 1890.
Application filed August 8, 1889- Serial No. 320,110. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN J AEGER, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented anew and Improved Album, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates .to albums of the class illustrated, described, and claimed in Letters Patent of the United States No. 407,074, granted to me on the 16th day of J uly, 1889, the object of the present invention being to improve the construction of the album forming the subject-matter of the patent above referred to.
To the end named the invention consists of certain novel constructions, arrangements, and combinations of elements, to be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved form of album, the album being represented as it appears when open. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the album as it appears when closed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged View of the edge-of the album, the stand being removed and the parts being represented as they appear when the album is closed; and Fig. 4 isa perspective view of a modified form of construction.
In practice I prefer to mount my improved album upon a stand which consists of a baseplate 10, an inclined back 11, and a foot-piece 12. To the forward edge of the foot-piece 12 is hinged a solid back or cover 13, and to the side edges of this back or cover I secure flexible backs 14. To the upper ends of the backs 14,1 secure the book- leaves 15 and 15, and to the puter edges of these leaves I attach flexible strips 16, which serve as supports for alternately-arranged leaves 17 and spacingstrips 18, the parts being arranged as clearly shown in the drawings. By this arrangement of alternately-arranged spacing-strips and leaves I provide for a proper spacing and support of the leaves, the leaves carried by each of the strips 16 being arranged to interlockthat is, to be folded down alternately-as illustrated. W hen the book or album is open, as shown. in Fig. 1, the strips 18 stand vertically, While the leaves extend horizontally. The lower leaf 19 is connected directly to the back or cover 13.
From the above description it will be seen that the album or book may be adjusted as represented in Fig. 2, or the entire body of the book may be folded down and the leaves alternately folded outward, as represented in Fig. 1.
Instead of connecting the book to a stand, I would, under certain circumstances, provide each of the flexible strips with covers 20 and 20, as shown in Fig. 4c and indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3, such covers 20 and 2O being so arranged that when the book is closed they will form the top cover thereof. The leaves are formed to receive pictures, one or more openings being provided on each page.
Now, although I have described this invention in connection with an album, I desire it to be distinctly understood that other books might be constructed to embody the invention.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent" 1. A book comprising two backs secured to a bottom or cover, leaves alternately connected to said backs, and spacing-strips arranged between the leaves, substantially as described.
2. A book comprising a bottom, backs secured to the side edges of said bottom and provided with flexible strips, and spacingstrips arranged between the leaves, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a stand provided with a foot-piece and a back, of a book comprising a bottom that is hinged to the said foot-piece, backs connected to the book bottom or cover, and leaves alternately connected to the said backs and arranged to interlock, substantially as described.
